Any tips or ideas on how to remove Intake manifold on a type sh

Just as the title states, any body have any ideas or tips on removing intake manifold? Long story short my friend got a piece of the brass plug stuck in the intake manifold.

Re: Any tips or ideas on how to remove Intake manifold on a type sh

1. Stop your friend working on your car.
2. Uhh, what brass plug?
3. Is it in the upper part or the lower? Or just behind the throttle plate?

The upper plenum separates relatively easily from the lower, just disconnect all the vacuum and coolant lines and off it bolts. There are many write-ups that can walk you through this. If you have to remove the lower plenum that's a lot more work. The fuel rail and injectors need to be disconnected then, again not difficult, but I understand the trouble with the SH is that the underside of the lower plenum is fairly inaccessible from below with the ATTS in the way, so the bottom studs will give you trouble and there is a support that holds the IM to the block. You'll need new gaskets for everything you separate before you start too.

Is there any way you can remove the brass plug(?) without taking off the IM?

Re: Any tips or ideas on how to remove Intake manifold on a type sh

You should be using a slide hammer for those egr plugs...

I've been able to use a long extension and remove the bottom nuts from above - required the upper portion of the intake manifold to be removed. But you will still be fighting the one nut beneath the egr valve and get beneath the car for the support bracket. Now if this works on an SH or not - you can be the test subject.

Re: Any tips or ideas on how to remove Intake manifold on a type sh

Haha, derp. EGR plug. Yeah, that whole sucka has to come off. How the hell did he get it to drop into the IM? They're tapered to stop such a thing from happening. Needless to say, DO NOT start the car before that thing is out.

Good luck.

Re: Any tips or ideas on how to remove Intake manifold on a type sh

I had this unknown god-sent tool(s) (had 3 of them) that came with my dryer, that I used similarly how you would use slide hammer. However this was the only plug that I let my friend (he is a mechanic) attempt to take out, he had never done EGR port cleaning. The brass plug didn't fall into the intake manifold, but into the passage way that connects the 7 EGR plugs. I got the IM & 2 butterfly gaskets.

Ultimately it is much better to get the manifold off, then you can get into all the nooks and crannies you see here, especially the one leading to the EGR, they get gummed up to chit.. Im not trying to get views, lol.. just giving u a good look at it.

Re: Any tips or ideas on how to remove Intake manifold on a type sh

Yea lol, I had an idea of how the system worked & the video confirmed my assumption, thank you for that. I will be attempting to remove the IM once the sun rises. Thanks for your responses guys. I'll be replacing some other gaskets along with spark plugs & a new PCV valve, and an oil change to top it off. I'll let y'all know how it turns out for sure. Thanks, G'night.

Re: Any tips or ideas on how to remove Intake manifold on a type sh

Guys I still haven't been able to complete this job, I'm a full time college student and I only work on my lude when I come home. Spring break is next week hopefully I will be able to get it done.

I have been looking on other forums & sites to on how to remove the IM from the Type-SH lude, and man I wished Honda made things a little prettier behind and under the intake. There is lots of hoses and I've read about people rubbing against their knock sensor...smh, what a whoozie. *sigh.

I wonder if there is anyone with a type-sh that was able to pull out the IM without pulling the engine, successfully. I read about a few, and they did attach pictures, but the picture links no longer work...

Re: Any tips or ideas on how to remove Intake manifold on a type sh

The IM definitely can come out without pulling the engine on an SH. Its a royal pain in the ass but it can be done, just be ready to get pissed off. The main things you need are a 1/4" socket set, a small 1/4" wrench (those with a flex head help) and several 1/4" extensions with the wobble end (these are the key to get to the lower IM nuts). You'll also need some basic wrenches and such. You can get those nifty wobble extensions at harbor freight.

Its pretty straightforward on paper how to remove the IM, the upper row of nuts are easy enough to get to with a wrench and or socket, the lower row of nuts requires some creativity and this is where the extensions come in. Basically you have to locate where the nuts are on the lower side, put your socket on the extension you are gonna use and start to slide it in there under the intake manifold. It helps to have some light shining from below to help see what your doing. You will need to battle your way through the stuff that is attached to the bottom of the IM (there is a small vacuum tank, a bracket and some vacuum lines) but it is nothing you cant get around.

Once you've threaded the needle (so to speak) and you have the socket on the nut, now you attach your wrench to the extension and start loosening that sucker. To make it easier to be reaching behind the intake manifold in the manner you will have to, I removed the spark plug cover from the valve cover and pulled out the plug wires, I then laid a blanket over the valve cover and basically did all the work while kneeling on top of the engine on my knees... It also helps to put the hood in the maintenance position on the passenger side.

Those lower bolts are the main challenge, if you can get those figured out the rest is much easier.

Re: Any tips or ideas on how to remove Intake manifold on a type sh

Hey guys, so I made some progress today. I'm a little stuck, literally.

So I removed all hoses and connectors, and the five bolts that hold down the throttle body & TB chamber. But the throttle body & TB chamber won't even budge when trying to remove it.

I already tried wedging a Flathead screwdriver and hitting moderately but it still won't budge

Re: Any tips or ideas on how to remove Intake manifold on a type sh

Does it give at all when you wedge the screwdriver in? These old gaskets are basically just glue, it'll take a bit of work to get it off. It should just be those 5 bolts holding it down.

I made sure everything is disconnected and unbolted, it literally feels like it's super glued.

Re: Any tips or ideas on how to remove Intake manifold on a type sh

Give the throttle body opening a couple upward hits with a soft head or rubber mallet, it will come off... like he said above, those old gaskets will not want to let go easy. Or you could try to find something like a wood handle from a broom or something to stick into the throttle opening and use that for leverage to pry the upper plenum off.

Re: Any tips or ideas on how to remove Intake manifold on a type sh

Alright guys, we did it.

Today my friend and I removed the intake manifold completely out of a 2001 Honda Prelude Type-SH.

It is possible to remove the intake manifold from a Type-SH Prelude.
I repeat:
It is possible to remove the intake manifold from a Type-SH Prelude.
I will make a How to thread in the coming days.

Thank you all for your time, consideration, and help. Long Live PreludeZone.

(This EGR/IM removal issue has forced me to research on other forums, and so cool to see "documentation" of other people experiences in the past, like from 10+ years ago when the internet was still a new thing. The only sad part is that some pictures are no longer viewable/non-existent.)
