My first track day ever!!

So like the title says it was my first track day ever. Ive never raced on the street or track so this was the first time Ive ever launched my car from a stop. Not very good yet. Here are some videos. Please let me know what Im doing well and what needs improvments. Thanks

This is an 1/8 mile track. No time slips here. My best time was 9.6.

Re: My first track day ever!!

wow you gotta practice launching hahahah

the 2nd vid you rev'd wayyyyyy too high, sounds like 5K.
and the 3rd vid you dumped the clutch. big no-no.

for street tires and an H22, i'm pretty sure 3500 is good to launch at, and you FEATHER the clutch, do NOT dump it!!! you'll jsut spin, as you know.

what were your 60' times?

Okay I will try 3500. I dont want to rev so high but it takes pratice to keep it at the right rpm and look at the light. As for my 60' time Im not sure. It was just an open night. I only got my RT, 1/8 mile time, and speed. No time slip or nothing like that.

Re: My first track day ever!!

+1 on what Neck said. Also try mucking around with tyre pressures, generally a lower pressure will get you a better launch. But only try this if you can pump them back up before driving home.

get an obd1 ecu and have it tuned with 2step around 3k so you can control your launches. dumping the clutch at 5k isnt working.lol

I dont really know a lot about ob1 and ob2. Correct me if Im wrong. Ob1 is the older model ecu and ob2 is the newer model. Why is ob1 better? Is it becuase it can be programed and the ob2 cannot be? What does OB stand for?

So you can tune a car that only has bolt ons with OB1 and that would be enough? No need for hondata or the Aem(these products can just be tuned more indepth)?

Re: My first track day ever!!

i was talking about his tail lights...

the first video was the only one it would let me view and he didnt seem to do anything terrible to me..

those tail lights just dont belong there...
they belong in a garbage can so no one can possibly use them again...

i just thought the point of these forums were to help the our prelude brothern in the right direction.

Re: My first track day ever!!

nice!! little high on the revs as said, and its more of a feel than an actual rev number, mostly because you are the only one who knows what condition your tires are in, and how good your clutch is. This is a good start though

Yeah man I was nervous and excited!!!! I could feel my heart beating super hard. I thought I was gonna have a heart attack. Even my GF that was recording could feel how nervous I was. (At the end of the video were my gf is recording inside the car you can here my nervous laugh at the end of my run)haha By the third and fourth run I started to calm down and work on my launches.

I like my tail lights and they will be there until I paint my car black next summer. After that I will get the black ones. lol

unless you have something productive or conducive to add to this thread that's related to the topic, STAY OUTTA THIS THREAD!!!1 last warning.
flaming someone or their car is grounds for a ban. and if you don't believe me, try me.

to the OP, your nervous jitters will go away the more practice you get, then your launches will become much much more consistent. your launch is prolly the most important part of the entire race, that's what everything is based off of.

also, you can tune a car with any amount of bolt-ons, but it would be much more beneficial if you at least had the basics before getting tuned, aka I/H/E plugs and wires. that way you don't tune a stock engine, then start adding bolt-ons, and needing another tune later down the road.

Very good advise colin!! Yeah lowering your tire pressure will help u grip on the track better.. there's a racetrack gas station right at my dragstrip so its easy for me to do it but if there's not one around just bring an air compressor

Stubesteak, you did good for ur first time and it takes practice.. someone mentioned switching to obdI and use launch control, I believe he was refering to an feature thats on Hondata s200-300

Re: My first track day ever!!

Alright well thanks for everyones advice. Ive learned I was lauching at way to high of an rpm. Around 3500 is good. As for the lower tire pressure I cant do that because I have no where to put air back in after the race. Also I just need to practice, a lot.

I shift at 8000 rpm. Ive seen in some other threads that at 8000 rpm is the best point to shift because the fuel shuts off just a little after 8000. I know this is true because I went over 8000 rpm at lost all power for a second.

For everyone with track time what rpm do you shift at?
Does it not make the most sence to shift at 7000 rpm our Max Horsepower?
Or will you get a better time if you max out the rpm?

Re: My first track day ever!!

thanks for posting the vids. I don't want to repeat what everyone else said but just keep practicing. I've been at the track only twice and I have a LONG way to go. Keep up the practice though.

Re: My first track day ever!!

OP, u did well for ur first time at the track. Obviously FWD isn't meant to get out of the whole quick. One thing that has helped me with more consistant launches is "pre-loading", or so i was told thats what it was.

Pretty much, u use the ebrake to hold the car still while ur staging in the lights. You want the clutch as the point where its trying to move the car, but just isn't enough, well when the light is about to turn green, u act like ur taking off from a stop light (at a higher rpm) and let down the ebrake at the same time.
Essentially ur "preloading" the drivetrain, (axles, and clutch) before u actually unleash all ur power on it. It makes for smoother, less tire burning launches. It may take a couple times to get used to but, wheel hop breaks stuff...
I actually didn't notice any wheel hop in ur runs, so its not much of an issue. Just keep in mind, "Spinning ain't winning"

a stock clutch will last a while, as long as you don't keep dumpin it all the time.

Re: My first track day ever!!

well back to what lilbill said.... lauch control. if your a looking to do a launch control (which totally helps) you can get that same ecu chipped for your basic bolt ons to improve some of your power. or you can just buy a msd 6al box...w/ msd coil and msd 2step. that ignition setup will give you a launch limiter and a rev limiter not to mention stabilize/improve your ignition.

After going twice my clutch is finished. I dont know how many miles were already on the clutch. It was probably near the end of its life anyways. The second and last time I went five cars broke down. Its hard on your car all around.
