My first 1/4 ever!

Okay, So I just got back from the track about an hour ago. Today was my first time ever going to a track.

I live out here with Kronicus at the 5500 (or whatever it is) elevation, but my prelude has been in this area its entire life. (so it should be tuned for the elevation, correct? <factory tuned that is>)

Fastest reaction time was my last run 4/4 at .355 (1-3 were higher cuz I was watching the tree, learning the lights.)
Now... My best run...was at 18.087 2/4
I think my main problem was that I kept getting antsy.
All four times I "hopped" though. I know that if I get a launch without "hopping" I can get it down to a high 17 or at least 18 minimum.

On the other hand.... Shouldn't my car be running faster than that?

2.3L h23a1 Standard Si Model
my chick was in the car all 4 runs.
If you have an h23 please list your times.

Mods done; intake, header, exhaust.

Re: My first 1/4 ever!

If you had a passenger I would expect that to be about right. If you wanna lower your et then that would be the quickest way to go about it, I mean she's gotta weigh 100 pounds, (not ever seeing her I have no idea, I'm guessing) but you get the idea.

What's a perfect reaction over there now, is it still 0.500 or is it 0.000?

But a good launch and running o your own will fix get you a lot quicker. What about tyres? Just running your streeters at standard pressure? I've not really played with street tyres and pressures on a drag strip, but maybe next time lower the pressure a little?

Re: My first 1/4 ever!

yeah your girl aint helpin being in the car with you when doing the 1/4...And if your able to, try to strip the rear of your car...like back seats, jack, spare etc....I lost about 60lbs. in my car doin that...i also lowered my front tire pressure to 22psi and raised my rear tire pressure to 40...this helps get more grip on the front and less drag on the rear...

Re: My first 1/4 ever!

About a buck thirty five is what she weighs. As far as the tires go, brand new front tires aired up to the recommended pressure. (street tires)

I did also have a lot of stuff in the back. Next time I go I'm definitely gonna empty out the back. But really I know last night I could have ran a 18 flat if I didn't keep hopping at the start.

What do you guys usually launch at?

Re: My first 1/4 ever!

well...hell i have an SS 5th gen....and my best RT was a .05....but yeah, for the psi, your recommended psi for the tires should be what 32??? So take them down to 22-25 for the front, and bump them up to 40 max for the rear...

Re: My first 1/4 ever!

for every 100 pounds is about 0.1 second. so try to get rid of as much dead-weight as possible (gf, system, spare tire, etc etC)
i've been to 3 diff tracks, and NONE of them have ever let me have a passenger. weird.
lowering your tire pressure to like 15psi should also help with launching a lil bit.
if you have adjustable shocks you can also play around with their stiffness'.
just try to practice your launches when your on the street and sh!t. i think i launched @ 3000 and feathering the clutch w/ my old H23. no hopping, no spinning.

for comparisons-sake, my best time w/ my old H23 w/ I/H/E was 15.1.
so yea, you got some practice ahead of you

Re: My first 1/4 ever!

Yeah I've practiced launches before, but I don't remember what I found good. I'll take out weight, but I'm not much for taking the system in and out. Way too much work.

My ride is pretty stiff but not adjustable
Tires are recommended to be aired up at 50 psi so 15 seems way too low for my comfort level.

Dude, before you call BS....Learn to read the full quote properly....back seats, jack, spare, etc... Etc. meaning any other $hit he has in his car that may weigh him down... Now anyway, ima call on the psi of your tires being 50psi....Try 32psi, that the correct psi for a tire with our type of cars...You do not go by the psi max on the sidewall of the tire you have, thats just so you dont commit suicide by exceeding that MAXIMUM amount...

Re: My first 1/4 ever!

50psi the the MAX recommended pressure.
i been dropping down to 15psi @ the strip for about 3 years now, no problems at all. and considering i'm 3 seconds faster, i'll continue with my tried-and-true method.

the back seats weigh so minimal, its not even worth the time to unbolt them. like tim said, they weight MAYBE 5 pounds total, upper and lower, left and right.

Re: My first 1/4 ever!

yeah, dropping down to 15psi is cool....im talking about him saying the tires psi is recommened at 50psi...I just know thats wrong, and has to be the sidewall max reading for that particular tire....and im not stuck on taking your back seats out damn...its not the only thing i said...If he chooses not to, ok...And i took out mine, with the plastic and seat belts, and it weighed about 8lbs....but the spare and the jack are about 35lbs at least, and with his sub and box, thats probably another 30lbs....if i remember right all i took out weighed about 40lbs...maybe 45...I thought it was worth it...

Re: My first 1/4 ever!

3000rpm launch always seemed about right on street tires with my h23a1/stock tranny and my h22a w/m2b4. With polyurethane bushings and all I think I could take it a touch higher now, but haven't played with it.

Re: My first 1/4 ever!

No I'm not into the whole taking the back seat out thing. Not unless I get racing seats and need to strap down the seat belts.

I'm not riding on stock rims and tires. 17's and yes its what the sidewall says. As far as I know thats also where the tire installers inflated them. I'd have to check though.

16.18, stock on 18's, only had my license about 3 months so I had no idea what I was doing.

15.35 on stock rims and i/h/e a year later.

Both were in an H23.

that sounds about right for 17's I have some 17's as well and the recommend for me is 47 PSI

I want to go to the track now!

Re: My first 1/4 ever!

Okay well I'm gonna try and go to the track this weekend. Anyone wanna place bets of what I'll run/ my best reaction time?

And I know I can stop from spinnin and hoppin on my rims. :)

You can place your bets using this information. Here is all my times and reaction times

Oh and P.S. It goes by the .000 scale

1st run
Reaction: 1.095
E.T.: 18.654

2nd run
Reaction: 1.094
E.T.: 18.087

3rd run
Reaction: 1.070
E.T.: 18.256

4th run
Reaction: .355
E.T.: 18.248

So: Best run: 18.087 Best Reaction: .355
Worst Run: 18.654 Worst Reaction: 1.095

Wow, looking at it my reaction times improved pretty quick.

Question though, on the tickets it says I1, I2, I3, I4 what does it mean?

Re: My first 1/4 ever!

keep in mind blaze with low profile tires like we have or "undersized" tires and stiffened suspensions your going to be more likely to hop.
the best thing you can do is make your tires a lil lower on presure (i wouldent cut past half max psi) and a good burnout (avoid the waterbox)
feathering or double clutching a lil bit would help in other words dont dump all the motor has off the line till the car is moving even slightly but dont hang out on the line doing this move!!!!

shift as quickly as possible and always keep your rpm's higher as you shift then what they woill be when you release the clutch into the next gear or you will loose momentium!

weight matters ya but dont waste time unbolting a system oir a seat be honest with your self you want to know how fast your car is on the street by taking it to the track or are you trying to race at the track.....we race street....i know you man your gona run the streets with your system and your back seat and your chick....so leave em in.
(i couldent get rid of my chick when i ran becase she "didnt wana be left alone" on the sidelines)
so it is what it is.

remeber also the way this track is setup on test and tune nights is your reaction time dosent factor into total e.t. time so you can set on the line for 20 seconds and then take off when you want and stil get a 18 second run.

about your car being tuning for its elevation......
my knowledge is most cars are tuned as rule of thumb for sea level
this is why a ecu tune can be so effective for pulling more power.
without a dyno and someone with some serious software or a chip and re-tune all you can really play around with is your ign. base timing and your fuel pressure.
like my fuel setup....i can also help you re-adjust your ign. timing to get a better fix on this high ass elevation we run at.

which is another thing you wana keep in mind were scrued....no matter how you look at it. if you took your car to a sea level drag strip youd prolly run a whole second or more faster.
look at those new srt4 neon lil **** buckets. i was talking to a guy that said no matter what he did he couldent get it to run at what it was supposta, at this elevation youve got to beat a motor to get air in it.

if im not mistaken on saturday night there was also alot of moisture in the air whitch amount up to less ready to burn oxygen in its gassy state =bad for e.t.'s
when winter comes it will get a lil colder and your times will drop and youl get a better reading on what your motor is capaible of.....
remember.... according to nitrious express every 10 degrees is worth 1-5hp depending on displacement

do you still have a c.e.l. light on....that dosent help....
did you leave your radio off and your brights off.....fully charged battery.....
did you leave your car off in the staging lanes and hand push it up to let it cool down......hot laping is never good!

did your car overheat at all????
one thing i saw a guy doing that night was taking bags of ice and setting them on his intake manafold and spraying a belt dressing (basicly wd-40) to loosen up the belts help free some restrictional hp.

and last remeber time spent on weight is great but youl lower your e,t's faster and for less spending time and money under the hood than any whare else.....

if your looking for more mods to help shave those e,t's immediatly hit me up ion a few im going to pick a lil sumtim sumtim later on today.....

Re: My first 1/4 ever!

Being as I just woke up...that was really long to read.

My CEL light hasn't been on for awhile. I had to clean the MAF/MAP sensor.
Stereo was off. As far as hand pushing and putting ice on my intake goes...I'm not doing that. Like you said, I'm on the street. When I'm on the street I don't turn off my car when I come to a stop light. And I sure as hell don't run out and put ice on my intake. lol

Re: My first 1/4 ever!

true story, R/T has zero effect on your E/T.

last time i was @ the track, i was lined up against another 4G 5speed F22 lude, and i got so excited pulling up to the line after the burnout that i left it in neutral

he takes off, i realize my mistake, and sit at the line for 7 seconds. i beat his 16.9 to a 16.3X
