mad suspension woes

ok so i've been having a problem with my suspension. if you are on SFPOA you might have been keeping up with it. but for those that havn't i'll fill you in. i have this clunking noise that i thought at first was the shock collars. boy was i wrong. that fixed it for a day. ha. then i noticed my sway bar was at a weird angle. the part connecting to the endlinks were not pointing straight foreword. infact they were pointing a good 15 degrees up. i didnt think that was right so i fixed that. that didnt fix it either.

well last weekend i was doing a tranny fluid change. and during an underbody inspection, i noticed my right rear shock had some sort of fluid running down it. i know for a fact its not brake fluid so dont try and convince me otherwise. its infact the lube from inside the shock. now keep in mind here, the shock has been making the clunking noise well before this thing started leaking. now its obvious the shock is bad...... but what is the problem before this occured...... keep reading.

so i got my car on the ground and noticed my sway bar moved itself. picture if you will, from the back of the car looking foreword. the left side has mere millimeters between the shock and the sway bar. and the right side has a ****ton of room... like 3-4 inches between the sway bar and the shock. so i thought to myself maybe the sway bar is hitting the shock causing the clunking noise.

so i'm taking my back wheels off, on the passenger side, i'm pulling up to loosen the lug nuts. well in doing so its compressing the suspension making the same exact obnoxious clunking noise i get riding down the road. so i managed to mimic the noise to a 'T' finally. so i shake it up and down and get the same noise i get over repetitive small bumps in the road....

so i got both wheels off and started to readjust the sway bar. and i thought to myself, with the sway bar disconnected, lets put the wheel back on and shake it again and see if i get the same noise... and you probably wouldnt believe me when i tell you but it didnt make the noise.

so how can that be.... i tried it on the driver side and in either case there was no sound. if the sway bar was ****ed up, it would make a noise no matter what side i messed with when its disconnected.

maybe someone can verify this but a friend of mine says he thinks that the added strenght the sway bar is adding is putting to much stress on the shock and causing it to make that noise. i mean it is noticeably harder to move the wheel up and down when the sway bar is installed. what do you guys think??? about time to throw the tokicos in the garbage? time for something new?

cliff notes: with sway bar installed the right side makes the clunking noise. with it disconnected it doesn't. left side doesn't make a noise in either case. WHAT THE **** IS IT? the clunking/rattling noise at first occurred only on small bumps. when i replaced the shock collars it went away for a day then came back even worse. it would do it on bumps i couldnt even feel. i adjusted the sway bar the first time and now it only does it on uneven bumps. on large, even bumps it rarely does it.

My left front clunked for months after my new sway bar install...and when we lowered the car, we found that the bushing on the factory end link was butchered. So, try getting new end links, or at least checking that first.

i dont think it's the endlinks. it came with new ones. but probably what i'll do tomorrow is swap the endlinks and see if the sound doesn't move to the other side.

Replace the rear shocks and go from there. You obviously need to replace the bad one anyway, so replace both. Btw, cliff notes should have been first, lol.

ok its the endlinks. i was told to test if its the shock put your hand on it and do what you did to make the noise, you should feel it. so i did that and i didnt feel a damn thing coming from the shock. so i put my hand on the sway bar and i felt it. then i put my hand on the endlink and i can feel it move as i move the wheel hub up and down. so looks like i need some new endlinks.... i cant believe they would go bad that quick.

if it's a clunking noise then it's your shocks. if you source it to the endlink then fix that and see if it still continues.

oh i know for a fact its the endlinks. i put my hand on the endlinks as i stimulated the sound and sure enough i could feel the endlinks doing the clunking. when i put my hand on the shock i couldn't feel it at all. i will however be getting new shocks and springs... probably some high end adjustable coilovers........ like D has... muahhahahahah
