Shocks and Struts?

Soooo. I've searched and Google'd, etc. but it seems as though there is just too much information out there that doesn't answer my question.

I would like to upgrade/update the suspension on my car, but I'm not sure about this one thing.

How many of each will I need?

Shocks: ?
Struts: ?
Springs: ?

PS. I have a 1999 Type SH

Re: Shocks and Struts?

Too many people shocked at the question, and probably trying to figure out whether you've looked under your car, or recognized the parts you're asking about.

No Prelude since 1987 has had struts -- a strut suspension (MacPherson if up front, Chapman if in back) uses the damper (shock) housing as the upper arm. 1st gen Preludes had struts on all corners. 2d gen had a Chapman strut arrangement in the back. From 1988 on, Preludes have a double-wishbone (look at the suspension arms and the name is obvious) suspension on all corners, with coil springs over shocks. That said, lots of people (including those who should know better) call shocks "struts", so you'll hear the terms used interchangably.

If you pull any wheel off, you'll see a large, telescoping tube (black, if it's the factory unit, but can be other colors) inside the coil spring. That tube is the shock absorber, aka damper, since what it really does is damp out the oscillating motion of the spring when the wheel hits a bump or the car leans over. Pretty easy to see there's one shock and one spring on each assembly. For some cars, and more commonly, large pickups and other large trucks or off-road vehicles, you may see more than one shock, because the springs are so large and the suspension travel great enough that a single damper would have to be huge. Not for us, though -- one of each per corner.

4 struts. a strut is the assembly that includes 4 springs and 4 shocks.

Re: Shocks and Struts?

Thank you. I have no clue about some of this stuff, plus my car is just low enough to make me never want to get under it.

So, I want to upgrade my suspension. I guess I'll go with Tokico or KYB. It's going to be my daily driver so, if there are any suggestions that someone might be able to give me while we're on the subject. I'd like a clean smooth ride.
And what is a good brand of springs, that would keep my car low, but maybe not as low as it currently is?

So we have 16 springs and 16 shocks.... :) The strut does include the spring and a damper insert. But you won't find one on a 3d - 5th gen.

If you're running on the stock suspension, that's as high as the car ought to be. Raise it, and you'll alter the handling for the worse. If it's already on aftermarket springs, just put it back to stock. The stock Prelude has a reasonable amount of suspension travel, so the ride's pretty good -- I've done 800-mile days and not been sore. If you're looking for something softer, you're probably looking at a different car.

Well, the car's been lowered, but I don't think by any conventional or recommended way. My friend and I are assuming the springs were cut lol

Re: Shocks and Struts?

Find a set of stock springs and try them out.
