5th gen - DD susp. set with mild perf. uses?

Hello all,

My mom has a 2000 Honda Prelude SE with the tiptronic automatic transmission and she's finally decided to go ahead with modding her car (she started with a set of wheels & tires last summer). Personally, I've been into modding cars since I got my first car at 16, however I know that every vehicle responds to mods differently and wanted to get some Prelude owner's opinions before I go spending her money.

Initially, I was thinking Eibach shocks & springs (a setup I had on my 2005 Focus) which is relatively comfortable for DD use and still usable in an auto-x setting. I was also considering Koni yellows with Tein springs, but my research has been limited at best so far. Also, are there any additional suspension pieces necessary (such as camber kits) when modifying Prelude suspension? This ride doesn't need to be slammed, so I'm looking at options which only lower the ride height maybe half an inch or there abouts.

As the title suggests, what are some suggestions from PZ's resident experts?

You are heading in the right direction.
With a modest drop you will not need a camber kit, toe and go!

You will here 5 speed swap a lot. 5th gens have a horrible rep for faulty auto transmissions.

GL.

Yea, Honda has an extended warranty explicitly for the tiptronic transmission (as far as my mom has informed me), but she rarely engages in performance driving on the street; I hope to get her out to some auto-x events with me this summer because I think she'd have a lot of fun!

I tried that with my Mom because she used to talk all this smack about how she was the ish when she was younger and drove circles around the guys.

Needless to say... I haven't got her to join in the fun yet.

If you can get more info on that extended warrenty I bet a lot of people here would love you.

I'll ask her about it for sure, as I don't know anything more than what I've heard her mention.

My mom has said the same thing about driving circles around the guys back when she was younger, lol; I guess it's genetic.

My dad was talking about going with a Coilover setup (for my mom's Prelude), so she has the option to adjust the ride height; she plans on driving this vehicle year round, and might possibly get an S2000 for summer-only enjoyment. I've never owned Coilovers, however always hear that in harsh winter conditions (such as those we experience here in Canada) can cause them to become seized unless you maintain them with possibly some anti-seize?

Re: 5th gen - DD susp. set with mild perf. uses?

I talked with a guy from Great Britian (I think) and he had a set of d2 36way adj coilovers on his lude. He had pics and there was snow everywhere. So I asked him if he had any problems in the snow with his coilovers. He said it has been a rough winter and they were performing just fine. I wanted to know myself because I am in the same boat as you here in Iowa with terrible winters. My plans are to go with the D2 coilovers and get the master suspension bushing set from energy suspension. As well as upper and lower (front and rear) strut bars from Explicit Speed Performance. And I will finish it off with some sway bars from ST or Tanabe. Those are just my plans for my dd/weekend racer.

functionform full coilovers are awsome if you dont mine a stiffer ride. if not id say get some tokico HPs or tokico illuminas paired with teins or eibachs.
