caution: side effects may include...

i have been looking to get some new wheel for my lude. ive heard that larger rims effect the odometer and speedometer.. is this true for 17" rims with the appropriate tires and 40 offset?

EDIT* sorry i wasnt sure where to put this thread so i guessed with this subforum. move it if its wrong.

when you go with bigger rims, usually you go with smaller tires. so if the overall OUTER diameter of the wheel and tire combo stay the same as the stock diameter, your speedo will still be correct.

but if the overall diameter is larger than stock, than the speedo will read slower than you're actually moving, and if the overall diameter is smaller, the speedo will read faster than actual.

ok. thats fine. thanks.
so my stock tires are 195. the wheels that come with the rims i might get are 215, so thats considerably larger... would this cause a problem with the meters?

195 and 215 are the size of the width of the tire {the part that makes contact with the road} 195 is a skinnier tire and the 215 will be wider- this will not affect the total outter diam of the wheel/tire.
