Re: Tyre Review Thread
Brand: Toyo
Model: Tranpath SW Size: 215/40/17 Price: (I forget, it was a while ago) Driving Style: Give it a bit every now and then, take roundabouts quickly but nothing crazy What you wanted from the Tyre: All rounder Good: Quiet initially, grippy in dry conditions Bad: Grip seemed to go away after about 10,000km, noise level was near unbearable at 110km/h after 20,000km, grip in wet was pathetic after about 15,000km General Comments: A good tyre all round, was relatively cheap, and while it wasn't fantastic, it was pretty good. A good tyre if you don't own a race car. Brand: Bridgestone Model: Potenza AR001 Adrenaline Size: 205/50/16 (stock) Price: Secret (mate's rates) Driving Style: Give it a bit every now and then, take roundabouts quickly but nothing crazy What you wanted from the Tyre: All rounder, quieter than the Toyos Good: Almost silent at highway speeds over Australia's patchwork roads, incredible levels of grip in both wet and dry, seem to be wearing well Bad: Haven't found any yet General Comments: I just cannot reccommend this tyre enough. Brand: Yokohama Model: S.Drive Size: 205/50/16 (stock) Price: (I forget, it was a while ago) Driving Style: Give it a bit every now and then, take roundabouts quickly but nothing crazy What you wanted from the Tyre: All rounder Good: Very, very grippy in wet and dry, very sexy tread design Bad: Wore out quite quickly, incredibly noisy General Comments: Not a bad tyre overall, but not a fantastic one either. If road noise doesn't worry you then you won't be unhappy, and road noise worries me a lot more than most people. They also tended to tramline a bit at lower speeds. One time I thought I'd had a blowout while pulling up at a set of lights.

Re: Tyre Review Thread
ha that's really weird, i was just thinking about a tyre thread a while ago when i was cleaning my old wheels but here is my write-up:
Brand: Firestone Model: Firehawk SZ80 Size: 205/55 R15 Price: around $100 each Driving Style: all season, general, everyday driving What you wanted from the Tyre: long lasting with good grip Good: lasted for alot longer and handled better than previous tyres Bad: nothing General Comments: i would definately recommend them! mine had to have a pretty wide profile because of the terrible roads i drive but my alloys still haven't a mark on them i'll definately be getting them again

Re: Tyre Review Thread
Brand: BFgoodrich
Model:G-force Sports Size:205/55 R15 Price: $86 each from tirerack.com Driving Style: Sprinted, I love mountain passes What you wanted from the Tyre: Good grip, and feel at a decent price. Good: Lots of grip, semi stiff sidewalls for excellent road feel. When new they were very quite. Very responsive, no hesitation on turn in. Lots of sizes to chose from in the 15 and 16 inch range. Bad: I have 15K miles on them and are getting kinda close to the wear bar. Summer only tire. General Comments: These are a summer tire, and that you can tell when driving in any weather below 40F. They become hard and unresponsive, just drive steadily for a few miles and they will warm up. But care is still needed because they still not at intended temps. Brand: AVON Model: Tech RA (DOT-R comp) Size: 205/50 15 Price: $130ish each on sale Driving Style: DOT-R compound What you wanted from the Tyre: Cheap DOT-R with a decent amount of grip. Good: Cheaper than other DOT-R. lasted about 60 heatcycles and 1.5 Auto-X seasons. Bad: Are heavy, tire places hate putting them on wheels, and worst of all, no longer for sale ![]() General Comments: I have been running these for about 1.5 years now. One has some blisters on it. The other 3 are all below minimum tread depth to be legal on the road. I have flipped them once, for better wear. Since they are so old and have been trough approximately 60 heat cycles, they are just about shot. They are much better than comparable R-Comps when cold. But not as good in the summer. The sidewall are very stiff like most other Dot-R. I am getting some Toyo R888 for the CRX (haha 13's), I will see how those are.

Re: Tyre Review Thread
Brand: fusion
Model: ZRI Size: 205/55/15 Price: around $450 (4) mounted and lifetime balance Driving Style: occasional spirited but a lot of highway. What you wanted from the Tire: for the most part a pretty quiet tire, handles overall well. Good: hold up well under hard cornering. life so far seems good also Bad: not a great rain tire for the 1st 10k miles or so but seem to have gotten better over time. general comment: overall i like the tire. at 1st i it wasnt a good rain tire but seems better now. the tread is hard enough to last a good while while still providing good traction in a hard turn. they do have a soft side wall but its ok since i do alot of highway driving it keeps the noise down...

Re: Tyre Review Thread
(prices are each)
Brand:Continental Model:conti-extreme contact Size:245/45r/17 W Price:116 Driving Style:Aggressive, any season What you wanted from the Tyre:long treadlife, great handling characteristics Good:Got both with decent snow traction (without going winter tire) Bad:In retrospect, a little more noise than other all season w's General Comments:if you rock BMW's Jaguars, AND heavy ass highline car, they work well. Might be pricy for cars that from the factory won't see 168mph, but you wanna come up from H-rated tires, these are the way to go. Brand:TOYO Model:Proxes T1-S Size:195/55R/15 Y Price:135.00 Driving Style:ULTRA aggressive all season What you wanted from the Tyre:Traction no matter what Good:All season drivability Bad:Short lifetime(14000k if you behaved yourself) General Comments:They live on another honda, but they earned IMHO the True Dat JDMYO award for unparalled grip(minus comp/track tyres) they completed my Sideswipe SI handling package and they just rocked! worth every penny. Brand:Pirelli Model:P-zero Asimetricos Size:255/45R/17 Y Price:190.00 Driving Style:ULTRA summer What you wanted from the Tyre:AUTOBAHN POWAH Good:AUTOBAHN POWAH Bad:7000K mile lifespan(got 3000 left) General Comments:There's a reason they come on porsches. These things warm up in one mile driving. I thought that I was pulling up freshly laid ashpalt; nope just the regular rocks found on the road... the grip is immense! If I weren't a practical person, I might've passed up the continentals for another set of these, but they get ZERO traction in winter. I've tried other types ,but as someone who prides himself in handling, These should not be overlooked. Get a used set of these tires(5/32 tread or better) to get a taste of awsome compounds!.

Re: Tyre Review Thread
Brand: Kumho
Model: Ecsta ASX Size:215/40/17 Price: $85 Each Driving Style: Daily driving, spirited driving, fast wide corners. What you wanted from the tire: Summer tire, traction in occasional wet conditions. Good: Very affordable, strong sidewalls, great traction under hard turns, almost no road noise. Bad: Not enough traction, as I can still manage to lose it in the top of 2nd gear. General Comments: I've only run the tires for 1 summer, but it seems that the treadlife on them isn't going to be good at all, I'm predicting about 15,000 miles. Nonetheless, they're a great budget tire for sport compacts. Brand: Dunlop Model: Graspic DR-2 Size:205/55/15 Price:$79 Each Driving Style: Winter tires, so slow and cautious ![]() What you wanted from the tire: Traction in snow/ice/sleet conditions, low road noise. Good: Great traction in the snow, however on ice and even sleet, virtually no traction. Also, traction in dry conditions is less than expected, even for a snow tire. Bad: Large amount of road noise, poor traction in dry conditions. General Comments: Everything you would expect of a winter tire, and if that's all you need, these are a great deal.

Re: Tyre Review Thread
Brand: Nitto
Model: neo gen Size: 215/40/17 Price: 85-99 a tire (depends on location) Driving Style: very spirited and the occasional auto-x What you wanted from the Tyre: initially NOTHING, just something to hold me over till i buy a new set. Good: very predictable, not all that loud, actually good in the rain. very confident pushing it to the limits and even past it at times. Bad: nothing, but if i had to say something, treadwear could be better i suppose. General Comments: its a pretty soft tire but lasted longer then i originally expected. i beat them to death many times and they still came back for more. it has an aggressive tread design and backs it up too. excellent tire for the price. i liked them so much i went back for a 2nd set. still impressed with getting 35k on them with 3 auto-x races in one day and very spirited driving, and crappy alignment Brand: fuzion Model: ZRi Size: 205/50/16 Price: in the 80s Driving Style: pretty spirited What you wanted from the Tyre: a good rain/decent performance tire Good: it was pretty predictable to say the least, i was always confident pushing it near the limits but never AT the limits. treadwear was good. Bad: not all that impressed with this tire for the price. for being a rain/performance tire, it was OK at best in the rain. not impressed with its dry performance either. General Comments: overall, if you couldn't tell, not impressed. actually a little disappointed. this tire was hyped up a lot. just wasn't as good as they made it out to be.

Brand: Yokohama
Model: YK520 Size: 205/50/16 Price: $118 each, includes mounting and balancing Driving Style: Pretty mild, maybe a 3K launch once in a while... What you wanted from the Tyre: Daily driver Good: Quiet, grippy in dry/wet conditions Bad: treadwear rating of 520, lasts awhile with lowered car/negative camber General Comments: Expensive (through Discount Tire) but good daily driven tire, decent grip and quiet.

Brand:Kuhmo
Model:Ecsta MX KU15 Size:235/40/18 Price:Cheap Driving Style:Summer What you wanted from the Tyre: Had them on my car just need 3 of them Good: Grips super!!! Great in the rain Bad:Treadwear General Comments: Treadwear is a little to fast, 20k miles tire, soft rubber

Brand:Kuhmo
Model:Ecsta ASX Size:205/55/15 Price:$400 installed Driving Style:Asshole What you wanted from the Tyre: Just needed tires. Wanted a whole brand new set. Good: Traction way better then the Firestones I had on there and they were the cheapest tires I could find. Decent in snow for a regular all season. Asymmetrical so I dont have to dismount them to rotate properly. Bad: Nothing yet. Havent had them long enough to judge treadwear. General Comments: Cant beat it for the price. They were cheaper then everything else out there including the crappy off brands. A local tire shop matched Tirerack.com's price which was the lowest I could find. |

Re: Tire Review Thread
I know Brash did these already but here we go again
![]() Brand: Yokohama Model: S-Drive Size: 205/50/16 Price: $90 each Driving Style: Daily driving plus having some fun from time to time What you wanted from the Tyre: Something new, reliable, good performance, good on hot and wet roads Good: "very sexy tread design" <--quoting Brash; They stick to the road very well. Very difficult to break traction. Shine nicely when cleaned. Bad: I hear they have short life span but not sure, road noise is not that bad but noticeable. General Comments: I really like the S-drives; especially for the money. I spent less on these than I have in the past on standard tires and these perform much much better. I live in FL so I wanted a good summer wet road tire and the S-Drives didn't disappoint. __________________ |

Re: Tire Review Thread
Brand. Toyo TR1's
Size. 205/55/15 Price. £65 a corner Driving. Like I stole it. What I wanted? Grip. Good. Absolutly incredible in the wet. 60mph corners in the dry with my old shoes are now 70-80mph corners, in the wet!! Really quiet, not a lot of tram lining. Bad. Softish, so they're going to wear out fast. General comments. Great tyre, but personally I find them a little "soft". On my car, it amplfies the mega "soggy" stock suspension, it's not a problem in the wet, as this is when softer set up is perfect. But in the dry it's noticable. If I could afford a proper, stiff, suspension set up then they would be the perfect tyre. Grippy as f**k, and but forgiving enough just to take the edge off hard ride.

Re: Tire Review Thread
Brand: Kumho
Model: Ecsta ASX Size: 215/45/17 Price: $86/each Driving Style: Spirited Weekend/Dragon Runs What you wanted from the Tyre: Package deal came with rims. Good: Pretty sticky for all season tires. Bad: Tires wear fast if you do any spirited driving at all. General Comments: Brand: BFG Model: G-Force Sports Size: 215/45/17 Price: $103/each Driving Style:Spirited Weekend/Dragon Runs What you wanted from the Tyre: Something that would hold up to my occasional dragon run with good treadwear, but not too harsh on the wallet. Good: Amazing tire, best I have ever ran. Not too soft, but not too hard. Bad: None yet. General Comments: Great tire for DD or spirted runs through the mountains. Brand: Dunlop Model: SP Sport FM901 Size: 215/55/16 Price: Discontinued - ebay Driving Style: Spirited Weekend/Dragon Run What you wanted from the Tyre: They came on my blades that i bought used. Good: Very long treadlife, pretty sticky considering how hard they are. Bad: Need to be a little softer. General Comments: Overall a good tire if you're not worried about stickiness then go for it. |

Brand: Bridgestone
Model: Potenza RE 760 sport Size: 205/55 16 Price: secret squirrel pricing.. but should have been like 450. Driving Style: Daily Sprited driving/some track/hard cornering What you wanted from the Tyre: something soft, to really hold through some really hard corners. Good: great DRY holding, off the line and into some pretty hairy corners Bad: any bit of rain or wet conditions and 60% of the grip is gone.. General Comments:overall a great tire for if you live somewhere that stays dry most of the time. i would recommend them.. and have.

Brand: Avon
Model: Tech M550 A/S Size: 205/45R17 Price: $109 Driving Style: everything but winter spirited What you wanted from the Tyre: nothing at first Good: awesome grip wet and dry, great tread wear Bad: softish sidewalls, i guess. nothing negative i can think of General Comments: got these when i got my summer wheels because i couldnt afford hankook tires. i push these tires to the limit, and theyre great. have awesome faith in them when cornering SUPER hard. only sucks on steep hills, in the rain, starting off from a dead stop, because i have a lead foot haha. definately awesome for the price, and theyre made by cooper, so you get good quality too

Brand: Cooper
Model: ZPT Size: 205/50/16 Price: 70.00 Driving Style: aggresive (throw some power slides her and there) What you wanted from the Tyre: Good traction and long life, and also something that didnt have bad road noise. Good: Minimal road noise and excellent tread life. Bad: Not much traction in wet conditions, tends to slip if braking or gasing hard. General Comments: Its an alright tire for the price, but i still would go with the yokohama s drive.

Re: Tire Review Thread
Brand: Yokohama
Model: Avid v4 (High Performance All Season: 500 AA A) directional. Size: 205-55-15 Price: 90ish? tirerack Driving Style: "passive aggressive" (conservative in heavy traffic [aggressive with cause, thanks DC driving], "liberal" on the open road... I love curves and vtec, sometimes together!).What you wanted from the Tyre: Sticky grip in most conditions, and decent treadlife.... I know, it's hard to get both... Good: Great wet/dry grip (AA traction), not bad in light snow, decent treadlife (considering) Bad: safe tread lasted maybe 12,000 miles for me, 20,000ish for many spirited drivers (not good for the supposed 500 treadwear rating), wet/snow traction diminished @ ~2/3 wear? (name a tire this isn't true for...) General Comments: I love these tyres, I am on my second set. I am considering buying 205-60-15 avid h4s (rated to 130 instead of 149mph...) to save a little dough. If I do, I will post the results. Very much recommended for the price, though I have not tested many other brands... Brand: Kumho Model: err.. some grand touring tire the shop had as a quick fix when I got the car... Size: 195-65-15 Price: <400 mounted and balanced... Driving Style: "passive aggressive" (see above)What you wanted from the Tyre: something not pure dry-rot Good: The car rolled in the proper direction until I did a 180 on a rural curve (I was young). Grip was adequate expect on said occasion. Bad: Those adrenaline driven moments that resulted from that lapse in grip... worn out at about 12,000 miles General Comments: good GT tire, not recommended for spirited drivers. I am considering one of the following 3 tires for next time if anyone has ideas (prob going 205-60-15... cheaper, might "fix" speedo, and give a tiny bit higher ride with less wheel gap, lol .... small sacrifice in acceleration seems inconsequential): Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position (tirerack) Yokohama Avid h4 (discounttiredirect) Falken Ziex 912 (discounttiredirect) was worried about the sidewalls, but they got a good review above (had 512s on my wife's old 03 corolla), I think the treadlife and performance with the yokohamas is probably better...

Re: Tire Review Thread
Brand: Toyo
Model: Proxy FZ-4 [[I think they are discontinued now =-( ]] Size: 215/40/17 Price: Depends on which tire I bought in the past 5 years[[lol]]...around $95 a pop Driving Style: Daily driver, not too aggressive although I get a wild hair every once in a while to street race. What you wanted from the TIre: To get me from point A, to point B with all season good traction. Good: Tires seem to last forever and do okay in rain. Long story short, I have never worn a pair out in 50k miles, BUT I have replaced a few and switched them around for other reasons. Bad: Not TOO grippy, but I guess that comes with longer life. OH, and the road noise.....INSANE. It sounds like I have super swampers on a big jacked up truck coming down the road sometimes in cold weather. General Comments: All around, this is a "safe" tire for a person on a budget that is still looking for something with a lil more of a performace kick, yet it is pretty stiff. I have been pretty happy with them for the past 5 1/2 years but it's time to find something new for the next set! Has anyone else even heard of that tire? I am thinking about getting the Nitto Neo Gens next time unless something else in the same price range comes out! I just didnt want to get them for the shorter life span when I was buying last time.

Re: Tire Review Thread
^thanks for the review... I don't know anything about the toyos, but have heard decent things about the nittos.
I just bought the Potenza Pole Positions for the lude... I did go with 205-60-15 (instead of 205-55-15) due to price and availability of good tires... seems like the 55s are getting scarce. It may be as much as a year before I put them on (had to snag them with the $70 rebate...). Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position I think they will perform admirably compared to the yoko avid v4s I love... here is a comparison (not the v4...) "May 16, 2008 Tires tested: BFGoodrich g-Force Super Sport A/S (Ultra High Performance All-Season 225/45R17) Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position (Ultra High Performance All-Season 225/45R17) Goodyear Eagle F1 All Season (Ultra High Performance All-Season 225/45R17) Yokohama ADVAN S.4. (Ultra High Performance All-Season 225/45R17) Vehicles used: 2008 BMW E92 328i Coupe" BFGoodrich Brings More Handling to Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires I will be sure to post a review after I get them on and get a few miles on them... Until then, I thought I would review a couple tires we've used on the wife's cars... Brand: Falken Model: Ziex ZE-512 (Performance All Season: 420 A A) directional. Size: 2003 Corolla S - stock rim...don't care...? Price: 60ish? discount tire direct Driving Style: spirited with that solid rear axle... What you wanted from the Tyre: Decent grip and tread life. Good: Decent wet/dry grip, not bad in light snow, decent tread life (may wear early... we traded the car just after getting these... they were much better than the Touring tires put on by the dealer...) Bad: None observed... they are a little cheap and sacrifice some performance... that's why they were on the Corolla and not the Lude! General Comments: Broke as a joke, or want something cost efficient? Maybe give these a shot... Brand: Cooper Model: Some touring tire (400 A B? guessing...) Size: 205-50-16 Price: Came on our used 2005 Ford Focus ST from the dealer... Driving Style: Spirited (with body roll) What you wanted from the Tyre: Didn't want this tire... just a new car... Toyota is slipping.......... Good: The car rolled in the proper direction. Grip was adequate when new/dry. Bad: Seemed to have the "worst of both worlds"... grip of a touring tire, tread life of a performance... BOO... gave up wet traction a little quick... after half-worn they sucked royally in the snow... http://www.preludezone.com/off-topic...der-style.html General Comments: mediocre touring tire, not recommended for spirited drivers. Brand: Fuzion Model: HRi (High Performance All Season: 400 A A) inside/outside Size: 205-50-16 Price: 72*4 + 50 shipping from tirerack Driving Style: "passive aggressive" What you wanted from the Tyre: About the same, or a little better than the Falkens... looking for a decent, cheaper performance tire?... the ST is significantly sportier than the Corolla, so we did read reviews and look for something with some grip. Good: Only about 200 miles on these, so tread life will have to wait... They seem good for the money, handling is more precise versus the coopers that came on the car, and they are a good deal more responsive than those touring tires. These things are NOT too quick to squeak and seem to have confident grip. Did well in the rain, not observed in snow... yet... Bad: They actually do make a bit more road noise, esp when pushed... seemed quieter new, but still very satisfied... will update on their longevity... General Comments: Good tire... nice match for the Focus ST (might want something a little nicer after we get SVT suspension...), but I would still hesitate to put them on my lude with the other options out there... I'd like to see someone try these all season performance tires out and review them... Yokohama Avid h4 (I think it's going to be discontinued... basically same as v4, so I think I know what to expect...) and taking it's place... Yokohama Avid Envigor http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes (seems to sacrifice some performance for longer life.... don't know how I am going to feel about that...) and maybe some of the other cheaper performance all seasons out there.... I'll ask the wife for any feedback and update as necessary.... I'll review the Potenza's in a new post sometime down the road... Here's my shell... Brand: Bridgestone Model: Potenza RE960AS Pole Position (ULTRA high performance all season: 400 AA A) directional. Size: 205-60-15 Price: 70ish? discount tire direct (after $70 rebate!!!) Driving Style: "passive aggressive" (see original post in this thread) What you wanted from the Tyre: A tire that can outshine the yoko v4s! while being an all season... Good: Oh, they're pretty! Bad: They cost money! General Comments: We're all doomed!
