Re: should i change my struts

yes. absolutely. do it right the first time. you'll be ok for a little while with out struts if you want to save money to buy better ones. but i would recommend for now, saving money so you can buy a whole better system all together and buy it all at once.

Re: should i change my struts

Its like how mike holmes says it. If your going to do it, do it right the first time.

Wait to lower until you get the new struts. Better of waiting then rushing in, its not double dutch hop scotch here.

Re: should i change my struts

maybe i should have put it this way:

i know changing my struts/lowering springs at the same time is the better thing to do.. but if the drop isnt crazy low how will this effect the stock struts now..

i had a friend who did his on a mcpherson strut and said he never had a problem..which this is the first time i have heard of this...

Re: should i change my struts

you also have a double wishbone suspension. Your SHOCKS arent nearly as beefy as the STRUTS used by the McPherson strut. But, the double wishbone is a better suspension all day long. Is your Buddy's car a Nissan? ;)

BTW.. stock struts probably will not last too long. This is bad idea for few reasons:

1. Going back stock eventually costs more or doesnt work.
2. Labor is much more to replace shocks seperately(even if you do it yourself)
3. An alignment is required each time.
4. Ride quality suffers significantly on 100k+ shocks at an altered height.

The previous owner of my car dropped it 2.5" on stock struts and it is getting more unpleasant by the day. Major shock-knock, and even the smallest bumps feel like curbs. Wait a while, save up, and do it all at once.

Re: should i change my struts

ok so lets say i dont mind "ride quality" and what not..which is to be expected if u sacrifice money, then you are obviously going to sacrifice something in another area..

i would put a 2.5 inch drop on my car w/o even a camber kit.. so whatever that guy did is just dumb.

in essence i was hoping for a spring that was just an upgrade, that did a small lowering job too

what happens to the shocks that is so bad?..do they bleed out?

and his car was a dodge avenger.. he lowered it like 5 yrs ago..

Re: should i change my struts

Well. If you don't care about ride quality (I assume you mean comfort, which I don't give a **** about either), then it won't bother you. But if you're worried about performance and longevity (which I'm sure you are), then you need to upgrade your struts. OEM struts aren't meant to work on a lowered car. When you lower your car, they will be compressed all the time, which obviously puts more stress on them, and they will not perform as well and they will not last as long.

Re: should i change my struts

thanks for the help. now the question is: what struts wont break the bank. i see every get KYB,Tein, but i dont have the big bucks.. i mean i make money but also have a mortgage but would like my car too look better but i dont put it in the shop just to be back 6 months later paying double labor..

my wife just recently had a baby so i lost a lot of time to work on my car but i still want to get this stuff done..thats why i have to have my shop do it..

With ur stockers being compressed all the time, if u hit a big bump it can cause them to bottom themselves out and cause leaking of the fluid inside them. Once the fluid starts to leak, they're done. Whenever ur stock shocks wear out, if you go over a bump your ride is going to just keep bouncing.

Konis are one of the best, but yes they are on the pricey end. I've got Tokico Blues on my car and i think the set of 4 was around $250ish...just check online.
