Vafc II

Well I must say that approximately 2 years ago I purchased the new VAFCII and I was impressed with the output I put out with it considering the engine modifactions I had at the time. Modifications where: intake, dc header, and exhaust. Most refere to them as I/H/E. I dynoed 166whp and 135ft/tq. I must say that I was a little disappointed with that but none the less that was what I made before it was tuned. It took Kevin(my tuner) roughly 45 minutes to beef up the hp and torque out put to 175whp and 139ft/tq. I was impressed with the results even though I thought that's where I would have been in stock forum.

What does this do for my performance?

Well it fine tunes (clean up) your air/fuel ratio and and also give you another rpm gauge/pressure gauge etc... etc... it also has a nice looking appearance which compliments the interior of the prelude IMHO. There is a led light that switches color from green to red when the engine switches to the high lobe of the camshaft.

Down side:

It does not actually tunes the engine. It is a piggy back ecu that manipulates sensors in order to gain power. In other words... it taps into sensors that give readings to the ecu. So it doesn't actually tunes the engines. It tricks the sensors to give the ecu a certain reading and the ecu make the necessary changes need. I would take it to a dyno to get it tuned because when you start to playing with the airfuel and vtec change over points you will through CEL code!
Overall:

The VAFCII is a great product for those who have simple bolt-ons and want to remain OBDII. For what the vafc is, its a great buy for the money. Not too expensive and can smooth out your power curve.

Here are a few pics:

and with it turned on before tuning:

it is a little better but not by much. I've read up on it I'm not really that impressed with it. It does some things that the vafc2 doesn't do but I doubt it will make that much difference between the two products when tuned. I like the RPM gauge on the Neo thats about it...

I prefer the SAFC I because i like the buttons over the dial, of course you have more points of correction with the 2 but ill live with it. Over all they are a nice buy.

So justcurious real quick on the new NEO. It basically does the same thing and manipulates the sensors to right? Therefor is it worth the 300 some dollar price tag? Should I just keep my Apexi Vafc 1?

Your settings will be different from Aces, as well as different from every other car that this is fitted to.

Well, I don't see why they would, if he's got the same SYSTEM as i do, and same engine with the same mods, it should be near the same. Shouldn't it?

Yes it should be similar, but there will always be differences. I mean the internal combustion engine has been around a long time and most tuneups will look pretty much the same.

However normal wear/tear take their toll, as do all the other factors you would imagine. How else would you explain my auto 5g making 101kW at the wheels on a chassis dyno yet a manual car with the same H22Z1 engine and less milage only made 88kW, on the same dyno about a half hour later?

Yeah dude... just because we all drive the same kind of car and use similar mods, doesn't mean we all tune to the same settings... Think about it... if that was the case, NO one would go dyno tuning... Everyone would just be using the same exact settings.

VAFCII IS a vtec controller... It is a Vtec and Air/fuel controller. SAFC is just an air/fuel controller... VAFC is a vtec + air/fuel controller.

The NEW version from Apexi is called the "SAFC Neo", and it performs the same as the VAFC... just a newer prettier (more expensive) version of it.

This is exactly what I was trying to find out about a vafc! Great write up. What is the install like? Is it something as simple as an obd plug in or more invasive?

Re: Vafc II

So you still end up having it tuned and the tuner set your VAFC II? I'm guessing some tuners have preferences of what they're working with?

Re: Vafc II

yes and yes. I'd recomend before buying any type of tuning product that you find out from your tuner what he likes to tune with and if this is a product you are looking into purchasing will he (the tuner) be comfortable using it...
