Android photo editor app by macgeyver

(Edit: Thanks for moving this)

In todays world of smart phone users the camera gets used quite often vs pulling out the DSLR, shooting pix, then swapping to a computer for viewing.

Nothing replaces the DSLR for it's accuracy, fast focus and all that. But sometimes life comes at you in a hurry. The camera phone can be your friend at those spur-of-the-moment times. Upon review of said photos the still major shortcomings of todays super marvelous phone cams is quickly noticed when shooting in less than ideal situations.

Enter your editing app. A couple of years ago this guy macgeyver created a phone app that is a wonderful editor. With each update it gets better and better. Ease of photo correction with a touchscreen device is amazing to say the least. You can even clone with it if you choose. Best part...it's a no cost download if you don't mind small clash of the clans type ads flashing at you on the bottom of your screen.

Here are some examples:

This morning I shot a few pix of a white emblem with snow on it. I did not expect magazine quality with a cellular phone cam. But did expect to see the snow vs the emblem.

^^ a tinge of red/brown needs correcting.
Go to 'correct', touch 'white balance' and touch the emblem...hit apply.

^^ tan tinge is gone.

Next a crop

^^ go to 'crop' and trim away. Hit apply

But it's a wee bit off kilter.
Again in correction touch 'perspective' and do some experimenting...

^^ a little stretch here, some squeeze there..hit apply.

Now it's off center slightly.
Back to crop and trim the left side..

^^ there ya have it.

I shrunk it to 800 res from about 1080 or so.
You do that by hitting 'resize' and picking your favorite pre-set or doing it custom.

All told, like 10 minutes. Perspective takes the longest.

White balance feature:
Now a white balance adjustment to a pic shot at night without flash under incandescent lighting (read yellow)

^^ way too yellow!
Now the idea was to show a major contrast of two silver items. Flash caused both to be bright n shiney...as in the same look...

^^ nowhere near what I was trying to show...
So flash was out. Crap! All that yellow.
Ah, but MacGeyver app to the rescue.

Open up the app, go to correction, touch white balance, then touch an object that should be white.

^^ big dif! but still too yellow.
Touch white object again and things turn too blue. Enter 'whiten'.
Still in correction, hit whiten and rub the entire photo. All of a sudden it has a white haze..
No biggy. But notice your colors are becoming very accurate. Rub the entire photo and hit apply.

^^ whiten is working well.

Now to remove that haze go to 'color', touch the left button until you see 'brightness/contrast'..
Back off brightness and add some contrast...
Viola!

^^ it's pretty close to what you see in real life.
It got the point across in the shades of silver of these items. A little on the blue side can be removed with 'color' 'temperature' setting, but I was happy with it.

Again shrank to 800 res. All took about 5 minutes.

Now a cloned pic...
Total time on that was about an hour as I resized several items using trial and error.

^^ for kix n giggles thing.
This was done shortly after using the 3m kit on Elspectros car. Folks were complaining the "free" MacGeyver app wouldn't cut n paste items like the $500 photo shop software. He said responded it does if you just use it correctly.

Anyway, it's not a cure for a lousy photo or lousy camera. But it sure will spruce up those less than steller (almost good) android cel phone pix.

Mr. MacGeyver, whoever you are...

Re: Android photo editor app by macgeyver

Some other stuff the app can do:

Memes

Using the 'text' feature words can easily be added. Colors, fonts and sizes easily customized.

E-greetings:

What started as a large res pic of a small recycled symbol on a computer screen and text added around it later...
Using the 'color' feature and changing temperature, saturations etc can change colors to something completely different than the original. 'Draw' feature was used to underline the word and 'effect/frame' to add the custom color and sized frames.

Change of perspective:

Using 'correct/perspective' and 'correct/white balance' gained this look.

Perspective change to cartoon pic:

Again 'correct/perspective' used. Then 'crop' to size. Then 'effect/unsharp mask' to gain the cartoon look. Then 'effect/vignette' to add the edging, then 'effect/frame/steel pipe.

Car pix edits:
My camera makes my black car blue.

Again 'correct/white blance'. Touch something white. Now this is very dry in colors. You can do a ton of tweaks to add back colors if you choose.

Nothing white in the pic? Not to worry:

If there is nothing white in the photo, choose the 'correct/whiten' feature. The gray was too blue. Whiten feature was used, then brightness removed, contrast added. That turned it a bit on the green side. So 'color levels' was used to back off on light green.

Perspective:

'Correct/perspective' can give you a look no camera angle can.

Pencil sketches:

'Effect/sketch' then 'effect/black n white'.

Drawing on a pic:

You can get points across using the draw feature. I use "200%" in the upper right most of the time to zoom in, then pick your color, line size etc and sketch away like in paint.

That's it for now.

So you android users, download the app and start playing.

Re: Android photo editor app by macgeyver

Yeah, I'm going to download this app tonight and share it with my wife, who takes a TON of pics with her phone as well.

Now, just to find an app to cut down the distortion when recording live performances up close. We get some awesome footage but the sound is severely distorted.

Any suggestions?

Re: Android photo editor app by macgeyver

Hadn't ever considered that...then checked my phone for mic volume settings..
Nill, nada, nothing. I use an HTC one M8 these days. I wonder if using your volume control while filming would turn down the mic sensitivity...it don't on mine.

http://developer.android.com/referen...inControl.html
^^ some propellor head stuff. But it's kinda outdated. Requires root as well.

Let us know if/when you find a good one please.

I'll be working on it too, along with searching for an 'undelete' app for my non rooted device that works w/o plunking down $39.99.

Update: I'm in communication with every geek I know. All are like "mic volume control for video?, why?" I say "concerts, sporting events, loud co-horts etc" I'm getting "hellifiknow" so far..lol

Re: Android photo editor app by macgeyver

Yeah, My Galaxy 3 is rooted with the latest Cyanogen MOD. I am going to look for an app as well and contact my buddy who is a developer to see if he can work some magic. I'll let you know if I find something as well.

We usually put our finger over the mic and that helps some, but isn't consistent nor comfortable to do for 30 minutes or so.

Re: Android photo editor app by macgeyver

BTW... Cyanogen MAY have a quick root option for your HTC... and for free. All you'll need a computer to download the Rooting program to and your usb data cable. The instructions are EASY and the root for my phone is pretty stable. Be sure to back up your current OS before rooting and I think the program has that option so you can revert back to stock.

I read putting tape over the mic works well. Dude said he stores a segment behind the cover.
But dam man, a frigging record volume is such a basic thing. Whut-thuh-heck is up with that? Maybe it's some kinda anti-piracy thing? Keep folks from recording the Rolling Stones show? Lord knows they need every cent they can get...

Thanks for the tips!!!

My moto droid and Bionic were rooted. My son did 'em. He was a certified developer a few years ago. These days he's got a dame, hectic job and all that...
I liked it that Mario walked across the screen when the phone booted up.
When I first got this device he said the HTC stuff is made to root, but Verizon had put in some road blocks. He's why I got the M8 over the S5, (which has a much better camera than the HTC btw).
I'm sure by now somebody has plowed over the Verizon blocks dev speaking. But I've kinda gotten used to ads.lol...and for what ever reason my computer mainly collects dust these days...

I'll look into that setup you mentioned. But if Ima root it myself I want my son looking over my shoulder...

Re: Android photo editor app by macgeyver

I know what you mean. I got a cheap "China-tablet" off ebay back when tablets weren't affordable and I got what I paid for (And didn't get what I DIDN'T pay for) meaning it has issues. So I rooted it... Well, tried. I was somewhat successful as in the root worked with a few glitches and so I tried to restote it, then re-root it just in case and I soft-bricked it. So, I sent it to my developer buddy and he is working on it.

I am pretty computer/firmware/software savvy, and could easily figure it out in a day or so, provided I had a few hours "quality quiet time" to concentrate... but I have 2 small kids who want my attention the minute I walk in the door after work and all day on the weekends (Which I am NOT complaining about one bit! ) so the only time I have a "couple hours" is late at night when i'm not focused and could easily mess something up... Like I did on that tablet. He got it out of the "boot-loop" the first day he worked on it and is working on fixing the root to be more specific to that tablet. He started college again so probably won't get back to it until he gets ahaead in his classes again.

Anyways... I will try that tape trick and pussibly some of that soft grey foam that parts get wrapped in sometimes. I will document what I used and on which song so I can isolate which one works best. At least until I find a program to control the microphone gain!

Re: Android photo editor app by macgeyver

I hear ya on the kids want attention thing. They're only young once...and that's only for a few years. And those couple of late night hours are best spent with moma (if ya know what I mean).

My oldest turns 30 this year. I swear he was 8 only 5 years ago.... (He's Elspectro29 btw)

Good idea about documenting your choices of 'gain' adjustments. lol

Re: Android photo editor app by macgeyver

When I first saw this pic I was stunned and amazed at the detail. The lighting, the background, the feeling it evoked..like you could almost smell the racing fuel and feel the earth shake.
But it's a photo taken by a guy hired to be the best.

^^ this was not shot on a cell phone.
Nor was it greatly altered with photo shop.
Nope, the right equpiment dialed in correctly to start with.

A fellow who probably has something like one of these...

^^ the lens costs a typical average years salary..$50,000.

And not real pratical at your kids baseball game or birthday party..

^^ looks kinda heavy

So you can buy one of these...

^^ about $2 grand

Or use what you already have..

^^ the marvelous phone cam.

You can still capture some good pix without all that....luggage

^^ ah, the unpredictability of the phone cam can be fun

^^ not bad for a finger nail sized lens

Nice Pics! I deduct that you took those? (The obvious ones)

And yeah, "After Hours" is reserved for Momma! She got tired of me messing with that China-tablet that she bought me an 8" Galaxy Tab3 so I would have more time for her... AND her Honey-Do's... Whatever category they fell under!

Yeah I took the last 2...both are unedited other than shrank for here.

Those Samsungs have real nice built cameras. My wife uses her 'note right often. I'm using an HTC one (M8) for pix these days...guess I oughta check the batteries in my SLR units..the spares hold a charge like a year, but the ones in camera..90 days?..and it was spring last time I knocked the dust off the bags.

Yeah, we are Android people... and Samsung as well... Except our daughter... She recently revolted and got an iPhoney. I insisted that she get the 64GB since I know how quickly the 16GB would fill up with Apps, Pics, and Videos. I have her old Galaxy 3 since it still work perfectly. :D

Anyways... Yeah we love our Galaxys and they DO take nice pictures and video.

Re: Android photo editor app by macgeyver

My techie son was issued an apple phone for work a couple years ago. When he came over my house back then he'd place it in our 'fruit bowl'...because he knows that's the only place for apples in our house...he has the M8 now btw...which is pretty much why I have the M8 now.

Samsung makes good stuff these days, no doubt.

Re: Android photo editor app by macgeyver

^^ yesterdays sunset from my deck pic.

Saw this stellar sunset and grabbed the phone cam, shot a few pics, zoomed in a smidge to get the outter edges bordered dark, took the shot, then reduced to 800 res with 'photo editor' for the photobucket to post here today.
To get the same (or similar) result with my Nikon gear would've taken several test shots to dial in the light meter, then some more trial and error to get close to the same colors as the sensors try to duplicate (usually w/o success) this blend of magical colors.

Now I wouldn't use my phone cam at a fast paced baseball game or to shoot bald eagle pics. But for the spir-of-the-moment still pics it's hard to beat 'em.

Re: Android photo editor app by macgeyver

Another miraculous adjustment by photo editor using correct/perspective, crop, and resize.

Wrong pic. Thanx Verizon.

^^ before

^^ after

30 seconds moving sliders at each corner to tailor the angles of the original photo to my liking, then a quick crop of the unwanted stuff and resize to 800 to post here.

Re: Android photo editor app by macgeyver

now if only MacGeyver did apps to fix my phone signals so these double posts will stop, along with loading incorrect pix from photobucket.

Thanks verizon. I pay extra for good coverage. Trouble is; your signals are lousy in more places.

Re: Android photo editor app by macgeyver

A couple more perspective tweaks.

^^ before

^^ after
Correction/Perspective where ya move sliders a bit, then crop.
Lesson learned here is oversize the photo if you know you'll be doing a perspective correction. Take a pic of the item with lots of extra area around it in other words.
Re-sized to 800.

Re: Android photo editor app by macgeyver

Double post play through...

Metering woes resolved

^^ before

^^ after

One of the toughest things for digital sensors who see things black, white, or shades of gray then interpolate to color...is the pure black vs white contrast. Sensors see it fine. But metering systems think shadows or highlights. It still plagues even high end cameras.
So avoid the over blown hightlights and shoot it dark. Shadows can be made brighter. Over blown highlights are permanent.
Now I could've tailored the grays and what not using the histogram and sliders in 'color correct', but chose to just use 'color' then add a bit of brightness then contrast. The idea was to show that taking a pic slightly dark is the way to go here.
A slight perspective tweak and crop took place and re-size to 800.

This was my log book and service manual reader before obtaining a physical copy. Now it's just my Prelude restore log book and record keeper.
