New Knock Sensor or P28/p72 ECU upgrade

I am experiencing the torque pit/hesitation that exists in the 3k rpm range. After lots of research it seems it is most likely my knock sensor as those are a weak link and most who have experienced this problem cured it by replacing that component.
A new quality knock sensor is around 100 bucks, which is pretty close to the price of a chipped p28 which is also just a bit cheaper than the p72 which is, as they say, the best ecu to get. These ecu's don't need the knock sensor or it can be deleted, unlike the stock h22a4 ecu.

I'm wondering what all is involved in upgrading the ecu and if it would be a good idea to upgrade or just bite the bullet and replace the knock sensor and find peace with my stock ecu.

I have a base lude with a tanabe dtm medallion cat back exhaust, cai and soon to be added is an apexi vafc and new hi flow cat and headers at some point.

Late to the party but...

You don't need to get a hundred dollar knock sensor. I'm running a $5 one from ebay. So are some of my buddies.

Most likely it is something ignition related. Plugs, wires, cap & rotor. Make sure to check your trouble codes to see what the car is telling you. If you don't have a code for the knock sensor then you might not need one.

What do you plan on doing with a chipped ECU? Do you just want one to get rid of the knock sensor? If you don't plan on converting to OBD1 and tuning then it is a waste.
