ECM died?

CEL came on in a 98 lude with a JDM h22 in it. it has headers, intake, exhaust and an s200 hondata as far as performance upgrades. Mechanic determined that the CEL came on because of a wiring problem, lo and behold the ecm is running in something called a closed loop. (i have no idea what this means) anyway, they said they will take out the hondata s200 (since it was one the one causing problems) and order me a new ecm for the motor and set me back at a stock ecm setting.

questions:

after they take out the hondata will my performance mods still work and not throw any cel codes themselves? im relatively new to the car scene and was wondering if the hondata is even needed?

Re: ECM died?

don't listen to your mechanic. the ECU's very VERY rarely go bad, and that's just what your mechanic is telling you so he can attempt to rape you outta prolly $1000.

your car is running in closed loop because you have a Check Engine Light, which is prolly from a bad (o2) sensor or something like that. if you can figure out what the CEL is for (you can go to autozone and they'll check it for you) we can potentially save you hundreds of dollars from rip-off mechanics.

Re: ECM died?

yea, they determined the wiring or something was bad through the CEL, which is why i am needing a new ecu.

also, the guy i bought the car from before me had a JDM h22 put in it. well, the mechanic was talking about something like i am running obd1 with an obd2 engine, i have no idea what she is talking about but to my understanding i want to stay with the obd1. when the new ecu gets here will it be obd 1 or obd2? they determine which ecu (no matter obd1 or obd2) through the engine codes right ?

Re: ECM died?

she said the computer is deleteing itself and not recognizing anything and slowly will end dead (which apprently it has enough for a new replacement, and for my gas light to stop working)

and i getting shafted? i already sent the car in for necessary repairs. i am getting a new ecu. which leads me to believe they might screw that up since it is a h22a swap in a 98 prelude.

when i get the car back im going to ask for the old ecm to make sure they put it in at least and go from there. a learning experience i guess.

from my understanding they would replace the ecm with the direct replacement correct?
