Best Pump Gas?

I am interested in what pump gas you choose to put into your Preludes, octane and who makes it. If you want to get technical about the chemical properties of the gas made by a certain company even better for discussion. I know that in different parts of the country all gas stations aren't available as well but for the most part I know that the companies like Chevron, Mobil, Shell, Texaco, Arco etc etc are. Please discuss.

Re: Best Pump Gas?

93, Shell and BP. If the place has 92 I don't even bother. Being completely honest btw.

It does say Premium only right on the dash and when you open the gas door, so that's probably best :)

Re: Best Pump Gas?

We don't have anything above 91 octane here, some places only have 90. I don't go there.
I stick with Costco premium because I haven't read any substantial or credible articles explaining why "Chevron with Techron" or Shell with their Nitrogen crap are factually better to use. Maybe this thread will generate some good contrast & comparison based off of more than opinion.

Re: Best Pump Gas?

mobile and BP are overpriced around here, usually by at least $.10 a gallon. shell is decent, cumberland farms and valero are like 5 cents cheaper than shell. i use whatever, and fill up with premium of course

usually i try to stick with circle 76 or shell premium only
ive actually noticed a gain in MPG with those although only minimal
2% @ most compared to racetrack or some other shiYY gas station

Re: Best Pump Gas?

I've been using Kroger 89 octane with my H23, but with the G I'll have to start using 92/93. Probably continue with Kroger, or Sam's Club (my local Club uses BP gas). If Shell price is close I prefer to use it, but it's always much more expensive

Re: Best Pump Gas?

92 from Speedway or 93 from Kroger. It just depends on where I'm at and how willing I am to drive. I always try to get Kroger because it's higher octane.

Re: Best Pump Gas?

There's only 2 paces around here that have ethanol free 91, both are Conocos. So I pick either of them depending on where I am. I have used Shell 93 before when out of town and seemed to have a lack of MPG pretty dissapointingly. Don't know what the scoop was there but using the homwtown fuel I can pretty consistantly get 30 mpg the way I drive (long distance and with purpose ) And on the way home got more to the tune of 25mpg.

Re: Best Pump Gas?

Costco gas :P I heard they buy from whoever's cheapest at the moment. I would buy premium if i could afford it, there are definite power gains compared to regular...
this winter in Socal, premium gas went up to like $3.17 to $3.40/gal. it's insane. I also heard summer this year gas will be around 4 bucks a gallon );

It is almost impossible to find 96+ octane gas for street use. So to answer your question, yes.

I use Kroger because I shop there for groceries and I can get 10 cents off a gallon, being in college, I care more about saving money than the minor differences in gas quality. I still use the highest octane possible in Kansas (91).

What do you mean? We are supposed to use premium gas only

I use 93octane from QuickTrip.. Not sure who all out there has QT's in there area but they are missing out lol

My dad uses 110 octane in his truck.. Which he gets from this little gas station down the street from his place

People... U gotta use premium.. It's not an option

Places I don't like to go- BP, shell, walmart/ingles

Actually..no

Well they (japan, Europe) measure their octane a little different. They have 100 octane which is actually 95 octane in u.s. Measurements. Look into RON, MON, and AKI octane measuring because I don't feel like explaining it.

Think about it though.. We have all these jdm swapped engines over here and no problems..

My97Prelude answered my question, I asked as I was supprised to see such low octane fuels only being available. I have driven plenty of times in the US but never visted a gas station (hire cars). In the UK our regular is 95 with 97+ available as super unleaded which I need for my JDM 4G. I use regular 95 in my UKDM 5G.

Edit - 00CDMLUDER solves it ;)

Re: Best Pump Gas?

I use Shell 93 but it depends on the station... one in our area has no ethanol added 93 and the rest are ethanol added 93. I get about 22-23 mpg (pure city) 27 (comb) 30-31 (highway) with ethanol added 93. I noticed a 1-2 mpg increase (across the board) when using no ethanol added 93 (24.5 city, 33 highway).

Re: Best Pump Gas?

Well if you know anything about octane ratings, you would know they are not accurate to the exact octane. Its more like an approximation. So 93 octane could actually be 91 or 95, for example.

I use premium only, because it is a high compression engine, and therefore do not want detonation or excessive unburnt fuel. I use 93 oct. but will throw in 92 if that is all they have. Not a big deal.

Re: Best Pump Gas?

-I don't use Shell because every Shell I've been to is $0.05 to $0.20 more expensive than anyone else.
-Chevron seems to net me the best mileage, and is competitively priced.
-No-name stations are a hit or miss on my tired old H22
-There's an arab run gas station around here that has 92 Octane premium (others are 93 around here), but it has no ethanol. It's like $0.15 more expensive... but it nets better economy and makes my butt-dyno happy.

A ten year old honda that has a 10:1 compression ratio.

What fuel and oil (as well as other parts and fluids) that should go into a car depend on the specifications and design of the engine and overall vehicle, not because of its age, name or price tag.

Evidently, you think it only deserves 87 octane gas because it is "just a honda." Well, if that honda had an 8:1 compression ratio, you could do that. Not at 10:1.

Using low octane gasoline in a car with a 10:1 compression ratio could very well cause detonation, knocking, carbon and sludge build up, etc. So have fun making choices about a vehicles requirements based on nothing mechanical, technical or intelligent.

So why do you guys on the East coast get the 93 Octane, and they limit us out here to 91? Because Premuim for me is like Regular to you guys. I'm assuming it's climatic?

ima have to quote one of the older members when i say "please sell your car"
Quote:
I am not here to measure d!cks with you man...but I am not putting premium in my car all the time with the amount of fluctuation that occurs in octane ratings as mentioned below. 10:1 is just fine on pump gas unless its getting flogged on a constant basis. I run back and forth on the gas depending on how much it costs at the time.
