Random Stalling, popping and the occasional backfire? help

ok so i put my prelude on the road for the summer car is a beast i love driving it and its starting to act up on me as of late.....randomly when idling it just shuts off PAH! starts right back up.....strange....then lately ill be driving and its popping and bucks like its gonna stall out then stops? then once in a while it will pop and make a lil backfire noise.....was thinking timing but it runs too good for it to be timing plus i just had the timing fix before summer (was one tooth off) but to my surprise i took my OBX 10.5mm wires off my cap and i think it was 3 out of the 5 wires on the cap were rusted to hell and the one on the coil was rusted pretty bad then when i took it off again to show my dad the metal piece had came right off the boot......so now that you know all that do u think that was the cause of the popping and stalling? im gonna order new wires this weekend and i havent really been driving it due to im scared it will die on the side of the road.i took it for a 2 mile drive about 10mins ago and it was fine but still gonna replace the wires and cap thinking of goin MSD set up give me some thoughts thanks

yea sounds like ignition. change your spark plugs, cap, rotor, and spark plugs wires at one time this way you eliminate any chance of something else failing. how was your tbelt off a tooth??? if your tensioner is failing that would be the number one reason for it skipping. if your new ignition does not fix your current problem... i would change tbelt tensioner then.

Timing belt was off one tooth cuz i put it on like that. when i did my swap i did the belt and somehow i managed to do that..... my mecanic fixed that the belt tensioner is brand new so i know (hope) its not timing. well my coil wire i just found was missing the metal connector inside the wire and the other end was not even attached! so i bought new wires off line and NO COIL WIRE! so now i have to wait till i get my MSD set up and im gonna miss the bigg car show at the mall this weekend!

Re: Random Stalling, popping and the occasional backfire? help

ok so ive come across something new/wierd today. so i call up a buddy of mine who works at a junk yard and asked him to snag me a coil wire as a temp till my msd get here. so he brings it by and i put it on....came off an older civic or accord or something lil different but no bad. and i realized something is arcing out really bad. i touch the bottom of the distrib get zapped so i shut it off and waited till just now when its dark to go see if i can see it.....so i start it up and you can hear my engine like loosing power cuz of this arc then i touch the coil wire near the coil it self and it zapps me. dont know why its doin this all of a sudden maybe due to the different wire? fits like a glove tho? any ideas let me know SHOWS IN 3 DAYS!

well something obviously isnt good the arcing means there is a open in the circuit so your going to have to use a DVOM most likely to find out where the open is

Re: Random Stalling, popping and the occasional backfire? help

I'm running a full msd system on my '98 SH and it worked fine for a few years when I started having issues with my coil burning out. So I replaced it and it burned out again. So I took the msd box off thinking that was the root of the problem. well the system still didn't work. After testing a few things found that the rotor button had started grounding out through the distributor. Replaced the button and everything worked fine. So in short test to see if you have continuity through the button where it attaches to the distributor, if so it is bad. Hope this helps.
