Cam Gear?

Ok I've been reading everything can find about engine building, n/a, turbo, 4 cylinder V8... everything, I've seen a lot of adjustable cam gears... my question is what exactly do they do? and are they worth the money?

Re: Cam Gear?

It basically allows you to adjust the cam timing, so you can have the valves open and close earlier or later in the stroke. As for whether or not it's worth it, I can't answer that for you. If you want to squeeze every last ounce of performance out of your current setup, then yes they are. But they take a lot of work to get right, lots of research and a bit of trial and error.

something you want with a full, or partial build. allowing for proper tuning is always a plus

skunk, findanza and crower make nice gears.... I have the crower ones, so I'm partial to them.

Re: Cam Gear?

well from my understanding... on a turbo car ... it is a plus. i was reading my turbo mag on a topic just like this. it said that for the intake cam 2 degrees advance exhaust 1 degree retard for optimal performance of stock cams in an evo 9. NOW DO NOT TRY THIS because obviously it is for a different motor and you dont wanna break your motor. BUT, the reasoning is to allow more air to flow in prior to compression stroke (which i understand) and to release the exhaust a little later (which im still not sure of why). in doing this it increased the midrange power on that dsm by a few ponies. i have aem cam gears and they are still not adjusted. one day they may but for now ... they just look good LOL. if i were you i would just concentrate on the power adders first.

AEM maybe? I'm not sure what makes cam gears better than each other though.

Did you notice any increase in response or better mileage?

Re: Cam Gear?

ok thanks, i was doin some reading on them on some other pages, i think im going with the crower now cause supposedly they offer mid range power compared to skunk2's high rpm pull, and crower is 450 for a pair to skunks 600ish, do u know how aem compares to crower?

Re: Cam Gear?

So are you talking about cams or cam gears? Your last post indicates cams but clearly your thread title says cam gears. AEM doesn't make cams.

Re: Cam Gear?

ya i didnt think so, but im redering to the camshafts, no the gears, how important is it to have the cam gears if ur doin a camshaft upgrade? idk if i really want to get into the tuning part of it right now. so basically im asking if its alright to keep the original gears and still see power increase

Re: Cam Gear?

if ur upgrading the cam you're gonna want an adjustable cam gear to take full advantage of the profiles of the camshaft. Not all cams work the way they should, if they're installed str8 up (0* adv/ret)

Yes you can keep the stock gears, AND see power gains, but a tuner will play a big role in that. If you're just learning about engine upgrades, tuning may be a bit advanced for some ppl. So hiring a knowledgable tuner is very important. Its also important to talk to your tuner to get their input on what may or may not work together, based on their past experience.

A better cam gear has good hardware to hold the adj pieces together. Back in the day, AEM's cam gears were held with 3 screws, now if u look at all the ones on the market, they have more screws holding it together.

I've never read anything of cam gears slipping if they're torqued correctly, but 5 is better than 3...

Re: Cam Gear?

I am on the wire myself, I am considering either the Skunk2, Fidanza or AEM tru-power cams, even though I never put any thought into the crower cams which are a big producer of components for the H22.

Re: Cam Gear?

if you purchase aftermarket cams then you should also upgrade your cam gears. this will help you get the most out of your cams.
