hey bro, its a resonator, and all it does is muffle the sound a bit more before it gets to your muffler. You don't absolutely need one, but it'll make the sound of the exhaust less ricey.

You can go to an exhaust shop and they will install one for you. Someone told me that flowmaster resonators are supposed to be the shiit. I personally like borla, and I think a borla resonator would be kinda good. You can get aftermarket resonators cheaper than you can get OEM ones. Just remember that.

When you go to get your muffler installed just give them the resonator and tell them to weld that bad boy in there.

And the longer the resonator, the deeper and less ricey the sound will be.

http://www.hottexhaust.com/

they have great deals on magnaflow... I would say quality should be comparable to flowmaster... I had a flowmaster 40 series at one point and now I am using a magnaflow metal substrate high flow cat... I like(d) both.

I would be tempted to go with one of these:

Re: new resignator i need help

yes... especially if you have a high-flow cat like mine (barely a cat at all) or a testpipe... it killed my ears before I got the resonator... the vibration off brick buildings 50 yards from the highway was amazing... I literally wore ear plugs if I was going to be in the car for an extended period (like more than 10 minutes)... I hated the sound... hah.
from below...
"I made the mistake of not getting a resonator right off the bat...got it real soon after the swap... the car could shake down buildings... the resonator is so important, made such a drastic difference... I would say get at least a 16", if you can fit 18" do it!, if you can fit 20+" go for it... I don't catch as much attention as I could, but then, I don't want to."

here's a good exhaust thread... (thanks to my contributions...)
Non-Ricer Exhaust

and from another thead... a post about the evolution and sound of my exhaust...

PLEASE DO NOT USE THE DERN SILENCER, IT DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF YOUR NICE EXHAUST... it makes more sense to add resonators

pipe: $150 (maybe...)
h-f cat: $80
res: $65
muffler: $90-200 (depends what you want) = $385-495 for everything but the header... a good route ALSO.

www.hottexhaust.com :great magnaflow deals on everything but pipe (and the "high-end mufflers")
stuff typically gets even cheaper when added to the cart enjoy.

Here is my car on the blueridge motorsports dyno after eCtune... it sounds louder than it is due to the high rpm runs inside the garage... I plan on putting some drive-bys on youtube at some point...
details on my mild eCtuned na build in "more info" on youtube
