:::{Kdrews}::: 1998 Turbo Prelude

Background: So I bought this 1998 Honda Prelude about 2 years ago. I drove the car stock for one summer and I was very happy with the car but then decided to start my first ever build. Not knowing that much about cars I did endless research. I realized that not many people built preludes, bc of the weight and other reasons. So I decided I would like to be a little different and turbo my 5th gen prelude. The original goal was around 300hp, but then I got a little carried away.. Here's the how the car ended up for the summer of 2015.

The car ended up making 450hp and 333tq. I was happy with these numbers and didn't wanna push the stock FRM sleeves.

Engine/Trans:
- H22A4 Stock Sleeves, Stock Head
- Eagle H-beam rods
- Mahle Gold Pistions 9.0:1
- Cometic head gasket
- Arp headstuds
- Skunk2 intake manifold
- Aem fuel rail
- 1100cc FIC injectors
- Competition stage 5 clutch
- Synchrotech carbon synchros
- Mfactory lsd
- Gator racing axles
- KS speed tensioner
- Skunk2 Cam gears
- Koyo half size radiator
- Spal fan
- Hondata S300 v3
- Walbro 255

Turbo Setup:

- Precision 6265
- Precision 600hp Intercooler
- Tial 44mm wastegate
- HKS bov
- SLS topmount t3 manifold
- Boost by gear
- Innovative motor mounts

Suspension/Brakes/Wheels/Tires:

- Koni Yellows with Ground control sleeves
- Brand new bushings everywhere
- EBC slotted rotors
- Hawk hp pads
- RSX wheels
- Hankook Rs3 tires
- set of M&H Slicks 24x8.5x15
- Innovative traction bar

Interior/Exterior:

- Dash 3 guage cluster: Wideband, Boost, Oil Pressure.
- Carbon fiber trim kit
- S2000 stearing wheel
- JDM red door panels
- exterior pretty stock

Some photos the cars first build/setup:

I was very happy with this setup but, as all of us do, I simply wanted more. So this winter i've decided to start all over again. I did not want to continue to push the stock sleeves so I picked up a fully built Benson sleeved engine.

- Benson Sleeves
- BC Pro Rods
- 87mm 9:1 cp pistons w/ hardend coating
- ARP hardware
- acl bearings
- ks speed balance shaft removal kit
- BC valves, retainers, springs
- 3 angle valve job, resurfaced deck
- BC turbo cams

Also after destroying that Competition stage 5 clutch at the strip I decided to try a Competition twin disc. Also picked up a set of Corbeau Sparco seats. Now gutting the bay to prep for paint. Here's how the car sits now. Thanks for reading, I would love to get some feedback or opinions : ).

Re: :::{Kdrews}::: 1998 Turbo Prelude

Impressive for stock sleeves.

Nice Prelude, did you have any issues with the AEM fpr at all? How many miles have you put on your walbro so far?

Re: :::{Kdrews}::: 1998 Turbo Prelude

No problems with the fpr. I've put about 3000 miles on the walbro 255 and its worked great : ) Upgrading to the Walbro 450 for the next build.

This is a bad-ass prelude. I'm interested.

Excellent! How'd the internals of the stock block look? If my Mahle Golds ever fail, I'd love to undertake a turbo build. Right now they're 15k miles past their 'rumored' life, so I'll just watch and learn vicariously through you.

I sold the engine so fast I didn't have time tear it apart : ( Good luck with your Mahle's !

Forgot to ask, is your traction bar noisy as all hell?

Noisy? No not at all, but I will be upgrading to the beefier ESP bar soon.

Re: :::{Kdrews}::: 1998 Turbo Prelude

^^ Good luck with that one, from what I hear ESP aren't doing much these days which is a pity because their traction bar looked sweet.

Amazing build by the way, so very clean, many kudos. I'm amazed the stock sleeves did so well.

Re: :::{Kdrews}::: 1998 Turbo Prelude

Interesting, both traction bars ive had have made tons of noise. Starting to wonder if its the innovative munts now. Every suspension component has been replaced or rebuilt. I sold my esp and purchased an innovative.

Esp is certainly beefier, rather dissatisfied with the innovative. Since the coating is cheaply done and overall not as sturdy. My only reasoning for selling was the spherical ends at the lca itself that allowed for more movement. Should have just made new rod ends..

Mine is still noisy I think. I had the innovative mounts installed before the traction bar and never had that 'noise' out of them. I'm thinking about trying to fit some nylon washers in the bar where the heim joint bolts to, to see if that quiets it. I've also begin so suspect that the traction bar allows a very small amount of play in my caster..

Re: :::{Kdrews}::: 1998 Turbo Prelude

Where the innovative bolts up to the frame looks solid but the radius arm joint looks kinda flimsy. The ESP looks a bit heavier but 10 times as sturdy, and I got rid of alot of weight up front so I wouldnt mind having a little extra weight down so low, better for center of gravity. It would be so stiff maybe could remove the sway bar if using the ESP up front and a progress sway in the rear..
I have the time to wait so I think I will go with an ESP, if I was in a rush I would get the Innovative, it does look better than some of the other ones on the market.
But the ESP has tow hooks and looks like a one time buy.

Re: :::{Kdrews}::: 1998 Turbo Prelude

Not much work has been done so just a small update. Removed the dash to delete the heater core, a/c, and blower also to mount my fuse box and tuck the engine harness to come out of the firewall under the intake. Also have been starting to assemble the engine and continued to prep for paint.
