::::Bykfixer:::: 97 Prelude type SH ; aka mid life crisis car

Oops! Accidently deleted right much of the original post from back in February. Was replacing the giant gas station pic with a smaller res pic.
This was in auto showoff originally. So the original post was not a build thread set up. It will be now along with some of what I remember was in the original post.

(1/25/15 edit: the following pages are stories and methods used to turn a well used 97 Type SH with deleted ATTS into a nicer looking, better running piece of Honda history.
Some things mentioned are things that worked and some that didn't. It's not meant as an end all do all how to. It's just a bunch of ideas and how I went about implementing them. But hopefully some folks can learn something along the way. End edit)

The 6095th 5th gen prelude was a Type SH. It was built in Oct 1996 and after nearly a year of absence is back in my possesion...the day before I turned the big 5-oh

^^ large steak n cheese only $650.
Rumor has it the first run of 5th gen preludes were all Type SH. Then after a thousand cars were built they supposedly built 1 out of 5 as Type SH and the rest were base model cars.

^^ genuine ash tray instead of the coin holder.
I had acquired a few edm parts during round 1.

^^ genuine rear ashtray.
This was a meant for the Russian cars. And sometimes they show up as a so-called JDM item.

Here goes:
Model: 1997 Honda Prelude Type SH

Engine: Mods removed and stock parts added.
All stock now.
Some cosmetic modifications will take place. But basically the goal is stock specs, or maybe some factory upgrades.

Tranny: M2S4 (4th gen, non vtec H23 cars) replaced the M2U4 (SH type). Came that way.
May re-install an ATTS some day. But the more money this pit requires, the less likely that'll happen.

Interior: Stock charcoal cloth with white accents. Sickspeed Q ball shift knob, some leather with white stitched accents and grip tape pedals. Marine Private hat pin from original owner attached to sunvisor. Some other minor, subtle accents will occur in time. But I'm still deciding on those.

Exterior: What came on the car from the factory minus a few missing items like license plate bracket (for now) and the under engine rain skirt. Also a few dents. (Dents are part of this cars interesting history, and will likely remain). Each emblem was painted black with varying types of coating for durability research for future use. (Fast forward 10 months. So far looks like brush on oil base enamel is best.)
(Edit: late 12/14; the H emblems are now a bit oversized with 20 coats of white enamel and 30 coats of clear)

ICE: Stock setup with an Accord radio pocket. Front speaker set up will be improved via some aftermarket items at some point. And an 'add-an-amp kit with a small amp to power the improvements.

Suspension: All stock with Goodyear Eagle tires. New oem shocks n springs will replace the ones on the car in time.

Misc: Stock decals on trunk removed and a Type SH for the red/white models was placed on the rear window. Missing fog light covers replaced. (Edit: 1/15; paint to match 2000 base model covers acquired and installed)

Future Mods: Restore the car to good condition using mainly oem parts when practical and adding a bit of pizazz along the way, such as a classic Thermal Research exhaust it came with and some checkered items. Engine bay restoration will be mainly back to stock where possible as the SH block/Base tranny combo leads to a few items not fitting like factory. Some accents will be added for looks.
Oh, and front brake ducts begining at the fog light slots. (Screens are prepared. I just gotta invent the ducts now)
Where possible/practical junkyard parts will be used as 'better' parts. We at S&SPOG enjoy making our cars better using recycled parts.

Ok, the recreate original post part:
The backstory;
I bought this car in late 2012 from a kid who told me the original owner had been killed in action overseas. I didn't know diddly about a 5th gen Honda Prelude except the SH was a special car. It started, it ran. I bought it. At that time the guy told me stories of how some dents got put on the car in some of the darndest places. Crazy marine driving the piss out of this car lead to some roadside objects being reduced to rubble. I was sold. He also said it had some JDM stuff that turned out not to be the case. Like I said, didn't know diddly about the 5th gen. But I liked the history...
I started fixing it up for a while. Started learning about 5th gen cars and that this thing was a mess. I set up a list of items busted, or missing, established a budget (long since busted by now) and a schedule. Then along came some 3g preludes and I set my sites on them.
When I bought the car my son had told me about it. His nice 95 had been murdered by a red light runner so he was looking for something to replace his bucket of bolts 91. But he didn't know how to drive stick at that time. Eventually he found a 93 and had learned to drive a manual car.
By now I was working a lot and trying to fix up 3 cars was not working out. So I gave the 97 to my son and focused on the pair of 91 cars. He drove the 97 all over the place and did a few tweaks along the way. His 93 was a daily and the 97 was his fun car. He was turning it into a psuedo Aussie car over time. But time was taking it's toll on the well used 97 and his meager resources were struggling to keep up with 2 old cars. Then a real nice 2001 car with a botched engine rebuild fell out of the sky...$800. So he scooped that up.
As time passed I noticed I had a limp from exiting the 3g cars that by now were sucking all my extra cash. My son decided to sell the 97 to fund an H23 swap into the 01. I was done with the 91's and was going to sell them.
We decided to trade. I gave him both 91's for the 97. He decided to mothball the black n tan 91 until he was done with his 2001 motor thing and then some work on his 93. The red auto 91 was to be sold for H23 funds.
I resumed the 97 restore with a passion like not before. I'd lost a year of the schedule but had learned a lot, so work at first will be quick and painless until such time as brakes are replaced and the engine area is restored.

^^ the 97 I got in trade

^^ the 91's I traded

^^ the 01 that lead to the trade

By working on 2 5th gen cars my son and I tend to share info on what works (or don't), what breaks and how to fix it. The 97 was purchased in 012 as a mind clearing bucket of bolts that I tinkered with back then and plan on continuing in that regard. And when it's going, is a fun car to drive.
(Edit: end of 2014; Much of 2014 car time was spent helping my son swap to a JDM 2.3 motor from an accord. Ole # 97 stayed broken a lot with one thing or another. So the time I had with the car was usually spent trying to start it, keep it running or keep it from overheating...or a combination of all of the above...
So I decided to park it near my tools and go about replacing, installing, fixing and correcting my engine and engine bay until such time as it ran proper or killed me trying. Just before Christmas 014 it was going. So I brought it home in order to set about installing or improving other areas of my car that was then 20' from my front door instead of away from home. A lot gets done in 1 hour chunks that way...end edit)

^^ me too.

Just gotta get used to the 'go' in this car again.
I'd forgotten city driving requires I stay in second gear most of the time... first in the neighborhood.
There seems to be a cop every hundred yards in my town.

3rd gear + poh-lease = speeding ticket.

South of Richmond about 20 minutes. Near Ft. Lee.

I didn't ask the po the Marine's name and he didn't tell me.
I found a 'hat' pin for a private attached to the driver side sunvisor. So that and the dents tell me that part is true. But the kid told me the car had this and that and it was not the case. So I don't know if he actualy bought it from a fallen hero or some guy needing some dough to marry his girl, a bus ticket back home or what.
Either way as a salute to all you veterans, the DAV sticker.
Hence the signature picture. Thank you!!!
The 'hat' pin is still where I found it.

Re: ::::Bykfixer:::: 97 Prelude type SH ; aka mid life crisis car

^^ coming from you... who has told some interesting tales along the way your own self, I'm honored.
Thank you.

Today was a good day to buy a climate control cable. So... order it online? Pay $8 plus $199 s&h from majestic who'll mail it eventually? Or drive 10 miles to the stealership and pay $11?
Easy choice when you just got a fun car. I didn't have a red Honda hat anyway. Now I do.

The parts guy stated it would normally be in tomorrow from Pennsilvania, but snow-magedon may delay that a day or two. I replied the car has heat. No hurry.

Once again while there a salesman enquired if I wanna trade the jalopy for a civic... once again I replied 'yeah throw in $10k cash and it's a deal.'

I took a couple of pics while there...

^^ Current state of things.
Note heavy vest in case the car breaks. New hat.

^^ a year later no unbroken dust cover acquired.
Time for a bykfixer mod.
Note the cig lighter top left from a 1969 corolla sporter.

^^ that wheel gap don't bother me one bit.

^^ polarized spot mirror.
Quick lane changes. Who has time to look around?
Expensive panorama type rear view or in stock stick on type spot...
Another easy choice.

^^ rear view mirror pic of the SH sticker.
Mugen sticker goes where the pedals go. For $175 for pedal covers it looks like they would've tossed in a sticker. But nooooo! Another $8 required to get a 1/2" by 2" decal on the mirror.

^^ Car wrapped up in anticipation of a snow storm.
We collect black dogs too Lazarky.
F@#k wit Unit 1 and we release to hounds... who'll bug ya for a game of tug-o-war.

Re: ::::Bykfixer:::: 97 Prelude type SH ; aka mid life crisis car

^^ Hey now, cut me some slack bro. I turn the big 5 oh hours from now. I'm a wee bit unstable right now.
Boosted mid life crisis... 12 psi.

Would it help if I told you there's some 3g parts in the plan?

Some things have come full circle, really.
I was hoping Elspectro would chime in here and help me out.

That red car was the reason he picked a prelude for his first car. A neighbor owned it. Back then I had a helluva time getting in/out of his 91 and that has not gotten better to say the least. I limped after climbing out of them.
My son really, really likes the black 91. So on his 28th birthday it bacame his. And an old friendship with a beat up 5th gen was re-kindled.

kinda
Doggy mod.

Bad weather. No work on the car.
The nuerotic dog had surgery Thursday. He aint allowed to lick the wound and will not tolerate a cone.
Between boredom and lack of sleep the wife and I invented the cuff thing.
So far so good.

^^ Junkyard score.
Thinking of installing this accord unit via a bykfixer mod.

Dawg-gon-right!!!
Vtech skateboard.

Figured out the new plug can be adapted to the old type easily.
Some scissors, some duct tape, some kite string and some junkyard parts.
Splice old and new type together... using new type male half and old type female half for a new type radio in an old type car.
Or the reverse if ya have an old type radio for a car that uses the new type of harness.

^^ cable acquired.
Have a helluva time leaving without a new hat.
Cable lubed and installed. Air mix control arm is sticking. Tomorrow pivot points lubed.

^^ Checkered grip tape in stock.
Thanks elspectro. Soon to be covering the clutch pedal.

While at his house I pilfered through a couple of boxes of parts. Since I was on foot only a few items were brought home. But enough to knock out a few items on the mile long 'list'.

Re: ::::Bykfixer:::: 97 Prelude type SH ; aka mid life crisis car

Goes with a theme begun my first go round with ole Unit 6095, Chris.

^^ checkers.
The mullet is gone, no more turned collar jean jacket, but it's still the 80's in my brain.

^^ Checkers
Aint quite what I had in mind square size wise. Later I'll do smaller squares when this wears out.
Figured out why the Mugens were $175. The adhesive was worth 2/3 the price. Mega sticky. I'm talking bent stubby screwdriver prying them off.

Then some emblem work.

The prelude word will be flat black in due time. New one is in stock. Just gotta force myself to paint an $80 sticker. Waiting to see how the krylon holds up. If it does, some dark gray edges on the emblems (like the barely noticable SH sticker)
90's Williamburg Honda license plate frame added for effect.

^^ front view.
At some point the grill will get replaced with dark gray mesh from Elspectros 01. And some mesh where fog lights go for future brake cooler ducts.

^^ possible headlight mod.
No more Spiderman headlights if I have my way.

So today I got the climate control fully functional. The top cable was binding. Somebody had kinked the b!tch in three places. A secret sauce of graphite, lithium grease and pb50 was introduced inside the cable housing for easier movement until it gets replaced. Control arm worked fine but I graphited it at pivot points anyway.

There's a chattering that's f@#kin' with me. It was there the first go round but I thought it was a pulley.
Test driving has resulted in a diagnosis of 'it goes away' when clutch pedal is pushed in or when coasting in nuetral. Yet it clearly eminates from the driver side.
It didn't bug me before. But it has moved from someday to top 3 fixes on my list.
Heat shield rattle is #2 and climate control was #1.. guess that makes the chatter #2....

Dog goes to vet tomorrow for stitches removal and then call in a favor or two from engineering firms.
I actually want to go back to work but my employer is playing footsie. Later Gator.
Dog has forgotten he just had surgery 6 days ago for a new knee joint. He walks on all four about 75% of the time already. He stands on his new leg and raises the good leg to pee. The vet was telling us 2-3 weeks before he does that.

After all that it'll be prelude time again. Window trim restore project and test out my grip tape pedals. Yesssssss!
Thanks for the idea D.

I'm getting as much 6095 time as practical until the Elspectro H23 arrives because once the 22 is out we're gonna work on gaining a proper engine bay for a while and there's much to do.

Re: ::::Bykfixer:::: 97 Prelude type SH ; aka mid life crisis car

Decided not to paint the $80 sticker.
Painted what was on the car instead....

^^ Nice thick application leaves no brush strokes.
Blemishes are mostly from the plasti-chrome underneath.

^^ done and done.
I'm stoked with the overall @$s of the car so far.
Gonna do the tail light all red 'cept the reverse light segment.

Meanwhile...
Grip tape was left overnight on the pedals in hopes the adhesive would activate.
Nope. Never buy $3.99 checkered grip tape called 'true grit'.
So I did the next best thing. Bykfixer mod.
Home made checkered grip tape.

^^ hmmm, medium or small? Decisions, decisions...

^^ viola.
I went with the smallest chex. I liked the medium ones best. But the smallest match other stuff in the car.
Medium will be used when these wear out.
Placed on the pedals to be left overnight so the adhesive of the 'industrial safety' tape can activate.

Re: ::::Bykfixer:::: 97 Prelude type SH ; aka mid life crisis car

I used this^^
Sticks well. Lasts at least as long as skateboard tape and is much, much easier to remove.
Have used it for years at work on steps, trailers, heavy equipment fenders etc so I know it works well.
Test slid my foot up n down the clutch pedal this morning about 50 times.
No movement at all. Yessssss!

That stuff from ebay should be called jip tape.

Edit:
The stencils came from a big box art stored named after my oldest son.

I used oil based krylon on the 'prelude' emblem for two reasons.
1) it was in stock at my house.
2) I figured if it doesn't look or stick well it can be removed like plasti-dip where it peels off in large hunks. The other krylon has to be 'scratched' off.

Re: ::::Bykfixer:::: 97 Prelude type SH ; aka mid life crisis car

^^ manuals and metal mesh in stock.
Manuals have greasy stains and bent pages.
Yesssssss!

Noise evaluation on my favorite noise evaluation hill resulted in hearing the mystery noise occurs in nuetral and when the clutch is pushed in. Less noisy, but still present.
Cool! At least I know it is coming from the driver side.
My suspition is axle since the volume reduces either when accelarting or not under load. But it might be the wheel bearing. Studying the atts delete...
(Edit: mucho study of the hard copy I now suspect either a spider gear or the intermediate shaft bearing. Now to learn how to diagnose which of the two spiders or the bearing... or is it a wheel bearing... my money is on the outer spider.. new drive shaft/axle)

Basically I get a good start, say 20mph then start down a quarter mile hill in my neighborhood. Turn the motor off, key forward so steering wheel doesn't lock. Roll windows down so noise echo off cars n curbs can be deciphered. If need be I repeat with windows up.

Re: ::::Bykfixer:::: 97 Prelude type SH ; aka mid life crisis car

Dogs eye view.

I have a dog who just had his knee fixed. When he's outside I have to walk with him everywhere he goes for a while. Give him excersise as it were. Today he paused to relax in his favorite morning sun-ing spot. Nice spring day. I chose to chill with him and listen to the world around me for a few ticks. His view of the world is interesting.

^^ onyx chilling.
Today he graduated from the 'cone' around his head.

^^ a new band aid. Charlie Brown style.

A little here, a little there, some time was spent on the car while my buddy onyx the injured dog napped.

Another Acura part that began as a prelude part.

^^ rear ashtray
From the rear door of one of those super nice TL cars that end up in the junkyard because Honda still uses the flawed auto tranny...
I had a euro prelude one but donated it to Elspectro's 01 car. While pilfering through parts looking for clips to hold the ecu cover on, I found the ashtray. I figure it looks pretty cool for $1.99 vs another $40+s&h for the real thing.

Hey bykfixer where did you score that car cover?

Also really digging the factory service manuals. Nothing like a hard copy

And I like the small checkered pedals. I would like to do that on my car soon

Re: ::::Bykfixer:::: 97 Prelude type SH ; aka mid life crisis car

Wuzz-uuuup 76?!?

The cover was obtained from a member named turbobum if memory serves. B!+ch is so nice! Expensive but worth it.
Google Evolution III or Kimberly Clark fabric.
Sometimes turbobum pops up selling real nice stuff.

I bought it in 012 (first time I had this car) with about a bazillion other parts from various members back then. The only certain memory of what came from where was the nearly a quarter of a car I bought from member 01preludeblue part out lol. Much is still boxed up waiting to swap onto the car. He had a crashed 98 he used for 5 speed parts. It had been garaged it's whole life. He's a good trader too.

Having the hard copy makes easy for my old school habits to study and learn. When reading back n forth between chapters, it's much more familiar to finger bookmark #13 and #15 then flip back n forth vs scrolling up n down on the computer screen. I even tried multiple screen veiw but the book works for me.

The grip tape works well. Not slippery when wet. And if need be (assuming you don't have tenderfoot) can be used barefoot. If you're into custom, it's easy to apply the coloring.
At some point I hope to do the dead pedal, but that'll likely be done by hand. Spraying would not be practical unless it's a solid color. The accelerator pedal may be a 'foot' some day.
