::OG's 1971 Honda CB750 (penelope/penny); cafe project::

Well guys I bought another vehicle about two weeks ago. I've always wanted a motorcycle but it doesn't make much sense to buy new and wrench on it, so I went old school. Bought the first "superbike" ever made, a honda CB750.

here she is, with all of her era correct accessories...

don't pay attention to that prelude buried in the background...

being able to see through the cosmetic add ons, I knew this bike was fairly complete so I made the purchase and I've been fairly happy thus far. I haven't ridden the bike since I brought it home, but I started the tear down a few days after purchasing her.

as of right now, this is how she sits.

still need to remove the old seat (once the new one arrives), stock turn signals, handlebars, mirrors, and fenders.

I've been ordering parts for over a week, and a lot of them have arrived. I still have plenty more to buy (if the wife doesn't kill me first).

Parts purchased so far:
-Hanyes CB750 FOUR manual, my new best friend.
-New OEM replica side covers
-NOS OEM side cover bushings
-Footrest, kickstart, and shifter bushings.
-NOS OEM front turn signal stems.
-NOS headlight socket.
-Deka sealed battery
-NOS rear shock bolts, nuts, washers.
-Male and female wire pins (to fix 40+ years of hacked wiring)
-Aftermarket tri bar, black dot headlight
-NOS headlight mounting bezel and trim ring
-black powdercoated mesh headlight cover
-cafe style seat
-Magnetic oil drain plug
-shock adjustment tool (since the bike already has the $300 progressive rear shocks I was going to buy).
-cafe style handle bars
-Shoei GT Air matte black helmet (most important purchase)

Soon to be purchased:
-clutch and brake levers (shorter handles)
-slimline clutch master cylinder
-bar end mirrors
-hand grips
-Firestone vintage deluxe champion tires
-new 4-1 header
-K&N individual pod filters
-front and rear LED turn signals
-rear brake light/ tag holder combo
-correct 69-71 gas tank (the one on the bike is a 72)
-horns (the current ones are huge and terrible)
-more responsive throttle control

Maintenance to be performed:
-spark plugs
-coils
-oil change
-new brake pads and shoes
-new OEM air filter (until the pods are purchased)
-brake fluid flush
-possible clutch replacement (on the original still, but seems to work fine)

I'll be updating soon

Nice score Dale. lol. Love, love love the classic orange.

Is the correct tank shaped similar in shape? Any 'padding' needed?
(for the extra post 30 spread-age)

Looks like a fun machine as is. Should be a fun project and when done be extremely fun to ride.

re: ::OG's 1971 Honda CB750 (penelope/penny); cafe project::

Oggs should reupholster the double seat in that leather website I linked you to Mike, they would do vinyl pipping and stitch patterns that would blend the seat into the bike.

Like match that gas tank...

The seat is designed well, cause yamaha used a similar seat design and as a passenger, it felt good. I was only a kid then, like 12, but it was a crazy good feeling.

Thanks.
the tag is expired, so I don't want to ride it until I get to the DMV. after I took off the bags and fairings, I need to get the wiring situated, it was a mess. I also would like to do some maintenance before I get too comfortable riding it. I have the parts, now I need to find the time within the next few days.

thanks Fred.
the color is actually red, the tank and sides are sun faded from being used for 40 years lol.
the correct tank is similar in shape, but slightly different. the badges and graphics are different, and the petcock is supposed to be on the right, not left.
here is the proper tank that should be on the bike, proper colors as well.

unfortunately, my bike shares the same tank and other parts as the 69 "sandcast" cb750, which are extremely rare and valuable. These tanks in half way decent shape are at least $300...

re: ::OG's 1971 Honda CB750 (penelope/penny); cafe project::

When I was a kid, say about '73, that color (orange) was common on new Hondas along with a blue that was kinda slate in color. Guess that's why I thought it was orange.
I think I had faded to orange at 40 come to think of it...
The correct tank/graphic in that photo would definitely go well with the cafe style. Vs the more friendly-ish looking 1972+ style.
What color will the finished machine be? Any chrome or all black accents?

Where does the cup holder go?

honest mistake. it actually is orange in places due to the fading.
I agree about the tank, it will look better with what I'm planning to do.

re: ::OG's 1971 Honda CB750 (penelope/penny); cafe project::

I acquired the hardware for the front turn signal stems today, all Stainless steel. I've decided to paint the signal housings black, since someone blacked out the headlight bucket years ago. I should be getting the lighting together and the wiring finished within the next few days.

hopefully going to the DMV on monday with the bike assembled in temporary trim.

I need to look into a historic tag when I get to the DMV

I said he had one... Didn't say it was nice... haha. Last time I saw this one it was in pieces. Might be back together now though.

enough parts to keep DEPOG busy with a couple of cars... there is a lot of money in parts sitting on top of that "shelf".

Very nice find there Ogs. Will be watching your progress with enthusiasm. I had a 72' for almost 3 yrs before some idiot ran it over in a parking lot. I also did the cafe racer mods. I had a little over 4k into it when it was totaled. I'll see if I still have pics of it and post up later. Pretty sure i still have a lot of parts also. I'll track them down and make a list to see if you can use any of them.
