Re: :::Linds-O::: 1995 SE/VTEC

If you highway cruise a lot, or eh,hem need to go 100mph while still getting 22mpg...yeah the Accord gear is great.

Otherwise 4th to 5th will feel like going from a nice zippy motor to my Ford Ranger 5th gear...where you down shift back to 4th on any decent hill.

I considered doing it to my 97 but then remembered driving that pickup in the foothills of North Carolina.
The Accord 5th will absolutely murder your low end thump unless you do forced induction.

Re: :::Linds-O::: 1995 SE/VTEC

hey guys I have a 1997 Honda prelude and I changed out my slave cylinder and slave master cylinder, my pedal isn't on the floor anymore, it has pressure but now when I try to crank my car up it just turns over like it wants to crank but doesn't, do you guys know what It could be. This problem only occurred after I changed out those two things.

Did you reconnect or damage the clutch neutral switch? That's the only thing you messed with that would prevent the car from starting. But being a 5th gen, I'm not sure if the car would even be able to crank without it connected. You'd have better luck with answers by posting a new thread in the 5th Gen section.

Re: :::Linds-O::: 1995 SE/VTEC

Got underway with project LSD/Synchro/5th gear mod..Transported the beef to my friends house with more special tools than mine.

Here's the dog teeth on the 2nd gear. I searched high and low for a replacement but..nothing.

I let the project sit like this for several weeks until the pressure plate exploded one day on my way to work.

Flashback to October 2015 to the first transmission swap, when I noticed a missing alignment pin that I suspected had rattled around at one point. Well, pretty sure the 2nd of the 3 fell out and trashed everything in the vicinity in a domino effect of destruction.

Fueling that suspicion is a crop of the above photo;

FYI- A pressure plate shouldn't look like this;

Getting this bolt out was fun;

Naturally, this prompted me to get my ass in gear with the transmission project

More soon..

Re: :::Linds-O::: 1995 SE/VTEC

So, before embarking on the M2F4 rebuild I needed to get my hands on a P2A8 5th gear, which I could have done either by taking apart the transmission that was currently in the car or buying straight from SynchroTech for around $50. I came across someone willing to straight trade the .686 P2A8 5th for my .871 M2F4 so I took the cheap & easy way out.

Now, there's "write-ups" on this Accord 5th gear swap around the internet, but nobody really explains and documents very well. The best thing for me to do was to get the .686 and the .871 in front of me to compare and contrast;

These are the counter shaft gears. It's easy to see the 'lip' on either side that needs to be machined off. The P2A8 5th gear (.686) on the left, M2F4 5th gear (.871) on the right;

Here are the main shaft gears. While there's a difference in diameter, there's no difference in width so there is no need to machine this gear before swapping;

I'm lucky enough to have met and become friends with a local Prelude owner awhile back, who has some seriously cool equipment, knowledge and experience with all this stuff. Recently he picked up an old lathe that was able to grind down the counter shaft .686 gear. Took awhile with a carbide blade due to the hardness of the gear, but we found out it was case hardened so once we got passed the outside layers, the metal got a little softer and cut quicker.

Once more, P2A8 5th on the left and M2F4 on the right;

Nope, decided not to grind cutouts into the gears, didn't feel they were needed.

Re: :::Linds-O::: 1995 SE/VTEC

Moving on with the synchros- the OEM ones at ~140,000mi still looked pretty good;

With the MFactory LSD chilling in the deep freezer for awhile, I learned that setting fire to the VSS gear will help it go on easier in the absence of a press;

Proceeded with reassembly of the LSD and carbon synchros in their respective gearset;

The shift forks confused me;

Once back together and home, you know me...of course I cleaned it all up:

Also decided to perform a CV axle comparison, since I was having so many popping out issues on the passenger side. I was able to confirm the CARDONE brand axles are in fact a little bit longer than Duralast/Import Direct brand axles for the 5th gen (Since I have a 5-lug swap I'm using 5th gen axles). I also have a suspicion that the Import Direct/Duralast axles are manufactured by whatever same company and just put into different packaging. So I will not be purchasing axles from O'Reilly's or AutoZone anymore, regardless of the lifetime warranty (If I can help it). I suspect the difference in length may have contributed to wearing out my differential bearing on the passenger side.

As of today, I have 140mi on the new LSD, synchros and flywheel. Oh yeah, I went with a Fidanza 9lb flywheel for S&G's. There is a LOT of chatter on take-off, but I dunno if that's as a result of the LSD of the flywheel. It sure rev's up fast though!

I'm also having a 3rd gear grind which wasn't there before. I don't know if this is normal for a break in period or no. I'm doing my best to let the RPM's drop before shifting and will switch to a different and thicker MTF after the break in. If the grind persists, well..I'll be pissed but I guess my only choice will be to open the trans up again. UGH.

I'm in awe!!!

Third gear grind is common with 5g trannies. Realizing you did not have the issue before.... it stands to reason that perhaps the issue with cheesy metal in the syncros is just now rearing its ugly head?

OGs and Wings can probably shed some light on the matter.

Not looking forward to doing that myself.

Good work man, sucks about the 3rd gear grind, but it's not likely to go away by itself

The syncho's are new, so..shouldn't be because they're cheap metal haha

No, it's definitely not. I'm just gonna have to take it easy until I feel like pulling the transmission out again. I guess we didn't measure something right, or checked a clearance wrong, or I put a thrust washer in wrong..hell I dunno. Kinda wanna pay someone to do it this time lol. I've had my fill of trans work for awhile.

Re: :::Linds-O::: 1995 SE/VTEC

Are the axles staying in place now?

With my 3rd gear grind if I took my time between 2nd n 3rd (ie did the zig-zag instead of straight path) it only added about a half second to gear change but no grind.

If you want to stay in vtec you'll probably have to live with the annoying ggggrrrrt until...

When I first changed to the Cardone axle, I stopped experiencing the pop-out but it still leaked a little oil. Now that I've replaced the differential bearings, there's no popping and and no leaking at all so at least that problem is behind me.
