re: :::Type T::: 1997 2.2 VTI

When I bought my car 2 years ago previous owner did the engine swap. So "new" A5 engine in and old A5 out, but the shop who did the change didnt do it properly. So soon after I bought it it started to leak oil... so.. ****.

they didnt replace all the gaskets so I had to start small rebuild session.
I thought that now when I had to take the head off anyway, I might "build" it too little bit. and everybody knows what "little bit" means...or first its always "little bit" but it doesnt really stay there, right? ;)

head came off

I got my head ported when it awas off and machined by one famous finnish guy, whos services many finnish rally teams use

I got skunk2 IM too, that I would get everything out from that porting

oem vs skunk

of course I had stock exhaust so I changed it also to little bit better skunks exhaust

installed:

when we were putting everything together I found these from one finnish auto part site

so I thought whatta hell, I might add them into my build also

before this build even started I was stupid enough to get DC's header...

this is pic when I sold it after my V2 build

after we got everything together the car worked like sh*t, of course the "new" head and IM did the ecu go crazy so I ordered p28 from HA Motorsport

then tune of course. first dyno session made clear that stock injectors cant handle my new setup anymore.... I was like huh, doesnt this never end?!

and then I had to order parts. again.

I decided to get acura rdx 410cc injectors from rosko racing.

installing part

old ones out

then 2nd time to dyno (like 3 months after the first time :D) and get new tune for those RDX's

re: :::Type T::: 1997 2.2 VTI

there was some heat problems in that 2nd dyno trip (one radiator hose leaked) and I was pretty pissed.

I was like "hey (my beloved) car, you don F with me, got it!?"

so I ordered

of course I got 4th gen radiator by mistake so... I had to send it back

finally the right one arrived

previously I ordered some other goods as well, since we're installing that radiator anyway, we could do some other parts at the same trip, right?

straight from the US came seibon!

fitment is perfect if you ask me!

do you guys know HOW MUCH it costs to get CF bodyparts shipped across the ocean? you probably dont wanna know but it costed me like 1600e (over 2000 dollars) this is motorsport, aye
and I had to wait them like 2 months, there was some shipping problems (damn DHL)

oh I almost forgot:

when I was waiting those injectors to arrive from rosko, I bought these

BC Racing BR coilovers

front

rear

after those I was "done"

this was the end of my "V1" build, engine was little bit better than the stock, but of course it wasnt enough..

re: :::Type T::: 1997 2.2 VTI

so rest of that summer went ok, I was just enjoying my "complete" car.

but then of course winter was arriving to the north and I had to find new winter tires

and then again I was lucky and one guy here in my home city was selling his rims so I thought that I check them out

they were ok, and now when I have those new CF parts, graphite grey rims would look cool, I thought

so I made the deal

I was working at that time so I had the income and of course "I want more power" came into my mind.....

in that year, Xmas came early and V2 build started

I thought that I complete my head build. and after some research I ended up with skunk2 parts

previously I told you that I got dc header...I started to worry about that, when I got those new cams - how much that dc would hold me back so... again I had to order stuff from Rosko

vibrant's header was my choice, no fitment issues or anything. and then I got it (double) coated here in Finland

again its pretty damn expensive to get things shipped from US to scandinavia: total cost (shipping, taxes, coating, installing) of that header was 1400e (1750 dollars)
so in this case custom header would have been cheaper, but you dont really know whats the best way before you do/try things :D

with those cams arrived new, bigger TB also

then just installing part and dyno/tune AGAIN (3rd time)

we had some idle issues but adjusting intake cam and ignition solved it

re: :::Type T::: 1997 2.2 VTI

now it has been little bit quiet, havent really get anything done much.. Ive done some travelling in Slovenia and Spain so Ive left my car alone for a while. Its nice to do other stuff as well, not to spend everthing into your car

another shot of my current engine situation. only thing I got for my car this summer was the JTC cooling plate

at this autumn I noticed that my stock brake rotors were pretty worn so I thought that now its good time to do brake upgrade as well

so I bought black diamond rotors and pads

previously I had ordered (with those cams I believe) SS brakelines so got them installed at the same time

result (I took these pics when I was changing winter tires couple weeks ago)

front

rear

dont know for sure, but it feels that those brakes are little bit more powerful than those (weared :D) stock ones. abs starts working much sooner when you press the brake pedal.

thats about it. for now atleast.

of course there has been little fixes and everything, but IMO thats just basic maintenance, so its pretty pointless to report them. now Im new'd almost every seal what that engine got... so probably the next major thing is clutch & flywheel upgrade when this current one starts to show that I need to replace it.

also those cams would probably need higher compression - new pistons, so that would be the build "V3" but its pretty damn expensive, so I dont know yet does it ever happen. we'll see

Good stuff! Hope to see more pics and updates!

FYI: Its not that people hate you for giving them advice its the way you present your argument and dissatisfaction of the item/product.

Yay now when people question you, post a link! haha

Good work so far dude. If I wasn't in the US I probably wouldn't bother upgrading my car with those shipping prices! I'd just save 20 years for a Porsche.

Yeah, I know the feeling too!

Here in Norway (and rest of Scandinavia ofcourse) it's WAAAY too expencive to buy parts from the US or JP.. In 80% of the cases, shipping cost 2 times more than the item itself.. It's sad, oh so sad.. \:

Re: :::Type T::: 1997 2.2 VTI

UPDATE

heh soon I have to rescue my baby, I havent touched her for a month

I have noticed that the engine consumes oil little bit too much so F the bank account balance:
the main goal was/is to get new piston rings, that the engine wouldnt consume oil that much..but again this is the perfect time to upgrade few parts ;)

some parts which I have ordered (again from US) already :

11 comp ratio Type S pistons with rings (including shipping, taxes etc 265e/354$)

Im pretty excited about those pistons, now my compression is close to 10 (damn EDM engines) so it would be interesting to see how
it will effect when the compression raises close to 11! I should see some good results from that, because those skunk2 pro1 cams are
designed to use with higher compression and now I bet that I didnt get everything out of them with my stock EDM bottom end.

THEN

Competition Clutch parts (total 549e/450$ parts + 96$ shipping + taxes = 740$ ..so almost 300$ for shipping & taxes )
Stage 1.5 clutch #8014-1500
Lightweight Steel Flywheel (~12-13 lbs/5,4-6kg) #2-701-ST

Also it would be nice to see how that lighter flywheel will effect to my cars behavior, I tried to find "the heaviest" light flywheel what
there is so that the cars DD features wouldnt suffer. The stock is (according to JUN) 8,4kg/18,5lbs

The manufacturer advertises that 12-13lbs steel flywheel like this:

"The ST flywheel is recommended for naturally aspirated and/or street driven applications.
Preserves low end torque and drive ability
One piece ring gear for high durability
Well suited for Stage 1 and Stage 2 clutch kit applications"

I also decided to upgrade my clutch, I reasoned this that the clutch's life is longer if it can handle/take little bit more than the stock one.

"The Competition Clutch Stage 1.5 is an economical solution for moderately modified cars or simply aggressive individuals with stock power.
Offers +40-50% of torque capacity and maintains stock pedal feel."

So again, this should suit my (DD) purposes pretty ok.

"future plans/mods" to reality. I guess this means the "V3" build starts soon.

Still gotta get/order few other things: some seals, new timing belt, bunch of bearings etc (I think I have to spend something like 540$ for those)
but before that we have to rip everything apart!

then I have to book new dyno/tune time....

so........ we'll see how this goes (hope that I dont have any oversize pistons there, that would suck BIG time )

Re: :::Type T::: 1997 2.2 VTI

some updates:

bought new oilpump
bought (used) H22A7 Type R block

I got a call from machine shop few moments ago that my old blocks cylinders are kinda "oval shape"...FFFFFFFkkk... so it probably needs sleeving if I want to use it... before I noticed that some guy was selling used H22A7 Type R block in finnish forum so I called him right away and bought the "victim #2" for 75 euros (98$)

hope that I have better luck with that one

so I have to move forward my dyno/tune time AGAIN since things take more time what I thought. I already moved it to 4.4. (from end of march) so I guess I try to move it to end of april

Sounds like your going to have fun some fun with those upgrades. Same clutch I put a couple weeks ago it grabs pretty nice and like with my 8 pound flywheel.

Re: :::Type T::: 1997 2.2 VTI

Some news: Type R block measured and its 3rd cylinder is out of service limit so next thing is to bore one of those blocks to 0.25mm oversize (= which means that my compression rises little bit )

SO I have to send those pistons back to US and change them to 0.25mm oversize ones. not that big deal I just lose some money. This is what happens when you buy sh:t before you measure and check things out!

Im going to get my pistons back from machine shop tomorrow that I can send them back and hopefully I can get figured out (with machine shop guys) which bearings I have to get that I can order them aswell

Cool.
I'll never complain about s&h again.
Well, I will, but all the while remembering it could be a lot higher.
Keep up the good work.

Uh, one question though. You don't have oem air cleaner?
