Re: :::Noober::: 1999 Base

The red 99 was what got me noticing the 5th gen. A red auto at a used car lot as a matter of fact. Dude wanted $9.5k in like 2010. I think he got 7 for it in 012...

Your car is nice. Real nice.
Any updates?

Re: :::Noober::: 1999 Base

Its been a while since I posted anything on here regarding my Lude. Ive been nursing a limping auto trans for a while. I wanted to get as much out of the rebuild I paid for before I tear it all apart and pop in the 5 speed I got for it. In the that process I reached 260k miles and its still running fairly strong. After getting prices locally to do a rebuild I decided to go a different route.

Anyway, here is what you all came to see...
My new(new to me) H23a Vtec.

And here is the table full of new parts to facilitate all of this.(does not include the 5 speed swap parts on the shelves.

As this process continues over the next few weeks I will be updating my progress on here. Hope you all enjoy my journey.

Re: :::Noober::: 1999 Base

260k!!! For-the-Win!!!

I might make 240k this year...

If you haven't already, buy new bolts to hook the flywheel up. My son had issues with the ones that came on the motor not working with the 5 speed as the motor came set up to bolt to an auto tranny.
There were also some issues with stripped threads when bolting up the tranny to the block. Heli-coils solved that.

Lastly, that crank bolt is likely super duper tight. We used a breaker bar/pipe combo held down by the motor crane with someone standing on the legs of said crane while somebody else pulled down on the breaker bar/pipe combo. POP!!! And the bolt could be removed by hand after that.
Also had to use the breaker bar/pipe combo to get the flywheel bolts off.

Member Wings8806 has a write up over at Prelude Central for all the stuff you'll need to swap. We bought a bunch of hoses, gaskets and stuff to ensure the engine stays leak free a good long time.
If you have any questions I'm sure Wings will be glad to share his know how. OGS too for that matter.

My son loves the H23.

Edit:
There's a group buy for vibrant headers going until june 15th. If yer interested check out the thread in the 5g section for info.

Looking forward to see-ing your progress.

Re: :::Noober::: 1999 Base

I already have the mt bolts for the flywheel.
I already have the crank pulley tool so Im hoping with my 4' breaker bar I can get it off the old motor. Im more worried about that than the one on the h23a.
As for the vibrant deal, its a great deal but at present its out of my budget. I think before I drop that much Im gonna get some f/f type 2's.

Had to order a ps bracket bolt and 2 trans bolts to mount the chain to today from Honda. All three cost me $12. Not bad at all.

Re: :::Noober::: 1999 Base

Got the motor on the stand finally. I had to wait on bolts from the dealership and it turned out 3 of the ones they sold me were the wrong ones. Either way its on the stand and tomorrow will begin the tear down process.

Ordered a new aluminum radiator as well as the manual timing tensioner kit. I also ordered a new crank bolt to replace the old one after I pull it out.

More to follow...

A friend of mine bought one and when he pulled the timing cover it was revealed it was outta time ...big time outta time.

So be sure to check and ensure you don't have other stuff to do.

Looking forward to updates!!!

Re: :::Noober::: 1999 Base

A buddy is bringing an impact tonight for the crank bolt. With my breaker bar and a 5' pipe extending its reach I still cant break it loose. I was lifting the motor and my friend but the bolt wasn't budging.

Now the radiator on my car keeps boiling into the overflow and sometimes boils out. I changed the cap but no luck. It never gets past 3/8 on the temp gauge, heater on or ac on, no white smoke out the muffler either. I don't see the fans spinning while sitting but with the ac on they both come on. I have a new thermostat but I wanted to put it in the new set up.

Re: :::Noober::: 1999 Base

More goodies came in today. New Radiator comes Friday. Going tomorrow to rent a hd electric impact to try and break the pulley bolt loose. If that doesn't work I'm gonna have to take it to a local shop and let them do it.

Re: :::Noober::: 1999 Base

This bolt in the main drive pulley is quickly becoming the thing I flip out over and loose my sh1t. I started with a simple 3' breaker bar. I then tried adding a 4' pipe for leverage. Then a plug in hd impact(450 ft-lb). Then that impact and a torch in cycles. Tomorrow Im gonna try a longer pipe and a different impact but the way its been going im not very hopeful. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: :::Noober::: 1999 Base

Today is a glorious day... I finally managed to get the 19mm crank bolt out. It was quite the bitch. Anyway moving on with some updates.

Covers off.

Cam seals changed, balance shaft seal changed, new water pump installed, auto tensioner removed and now I'm stuck until I get some guidance and pull my motor out my car.

Re: :::Noober::: 1999 Base

Do you have a service manual?
Made our life much easier removing the busted motor, and when hooking up the 2.3 we used removal steps in reverse. Gives you all the torques n tightening sequences you'll need as well.

All Gen. Prelude Service Manuals
^^ one of the last posts also contains a link to the electric troubleshoot in pdf.
The ETS book has helped me at least as much as the service manual.

I had those links from before but I had to reformat the pc and lost them in the process. Thanks for the link, I downloaded them and already have them on the laptop.

Wednesday is the day that I start pulling my motor out the car. Everything else is ready to go. Pics will follow...

Re: :::Noober::: 1999 Base

Progress moves on... Got in a bunch of little bags that say Honda on them. All kinds of stuff from pins to washers to bolts and everything in between. New oil pump came in today. So without delay...

This is as deep in as I'm going.

New oil pump installed and all sealed back up properly.

If everything works out I will be starting the tear down of my car on Monday. Gonna be a long week.

Re: :::Noober::: 1999 Base

We found that only a impact socket was long enough to get the 17mm(?) bolt off of the driver side mount...like $8 at any auto parts store.

Your current set up may differ...tried looking at the pic to see but it was a bit fuzzy zoomed in.

Re: :::Noober::: 1999 Base

I think I have lots of access to get to it but Ill keep that in mind. I do have a 12-21mm impact deep set. I also have lots of extensions. 2 1/2" extensions less though as I broke them today pulling the passenger side axle nut.

Re: :::Noober::: 1999 Base

I just remember the deep well socket was not long enough to get all the way to the nut because of the long threads. An impact socket was. A pass through ratchet like the craftsman max axcess will work as well due to the ratchet being hollow. But since they don't make a max axxcess breaker bar we used a regular ratchet if memory serves correctly.

Then we removed the mega long stud and replaced it with a second mount bolt like the normal one on that side. Made dropping in the motor much easier without having to line it up with the stud.
Wings8806 showed us that trick.

Getting the engine to set on the rear mount while setting it in the tranny mount is hard enough without having to line it up onto that ridiculous stud too. All this will make sense at motor plant time. Best to have help installing the engine. Either working the engine onto the mounts or working the engine. Doing both alone is very time consuming....very.
