:::LindsO::: 1995 VTEC

A HISTORY...

Craigslist is the new AutoTrader. I was actually searching for a G35 when my best friend came across this diamond in the rough, though at this point it's still a little rough. After I bought it I found out the thing was sitting in someone's side yard for however long- It'd been physically beaten to hell, the paint was oxidized and all faded, the body was in poor shape and the interior was torn to shreds, and who knows how many times it'd rained on it like that. But when I got it, the engine..popped the hood, it didn't even have a cold air intake on it, and had a mere 96K on the odometer. The guy had a twin-turboed Dodge Stealth so I didn't think he was using this to whip around in. I thought 'What the hell, I've never owned a FWD vehicle before', and since the look of the front end of these things has long been my favorite, I went for it. This is what it looked like then;

To this point it's been more of a battle with random mechanical troubles returning to proper working order. Auto tensioner popped twice AFTER the timing belt blew (2 Timing Belts Lost in 15 Miles, What Timing Belt for Manual Tensioner Conversion?), and somehow everything in the head remained intact and compression is still fine, so this car is a true warrior, and a keeper at that. The good thing about New Mexico driven cars is the absence of rust 98% of the time. They don't use salt on the roads in the winter here, but rather red clay, so it's not much different than driving over dirt (Although you get the occasional large-chunk-to-the-windshield). That said, once I get this thing back to good, I have high hopes it won't be difficult to maintain, physically. Mechanically, I have even higher hopes.

This is what it looks like now;

We'll see what comes of it though. It's gonna be interesting.

INTERIOR: Probably about 80% replaced due to vandalism or someone backing into it or something; New cloth seats (front and back used to be leather), new carpet and floor mats, new door panels, new shift knob and boot, center console..all replaced with stock components with the exception of the floor mats.
First upgrade I installed was a JTC short shifter and it's totally awesome. Converted green dash lights to blue, got a dash mat to protect the dash. Still trying to source a fog light switch for a 94-95 as of 01/2013.

EXTERIOR: New fenders, hood, front bumper, passenger door, JDM black headlights, new front glass, back and side glass. Windows tinted to 15%, cheapo paint job to keep it shiny for now. Accord rear lip, refurbed stock rims - Refurb'ed my stock rims finally.

ENGINE: Nothing but an ebay intake right now.

SUSPENSION: Completely stock.

I.C.E.: Sony headunit with Pioneer speakers in the doors and rear deck. Trunk has 1000w Kenwood Excelon amplifier bridged out to one Infiniti 450wRMS/1040wMax 10in subwoofer in a bandpass enclosure. Viper alarm. Kill switch in the works.

FUTURE MODIFICATIONS:

...Ready and waiting;
-Chipped P28

-Euro-R IM with custom fuel rail and 68mm throttle body

-Skunk2 Pro2 camshafts, retainers, springs and cam gears

-Hytech Replica

...To be purchased;
Lighter flywheel w/ stage II clutch, valves, LSD?, will have head port-matched as necessary. Acura RDX injectors.
Engine first, suspension later..

MISC.: I drive fast because I can, always safe.

GOALS: Show up the cocky bastards in Mustang GT's and Cobalt SS's, learn more about how to do my own work on cars.

...So it starts...

Completely Stock Dyno;

Re: :::LindsO::: 1995 VTEC

The OP was in the market for a G35 and wound up with a junkyard-condition 4th gen prelude. Sounds like something I would do, lol. I have mad respect for built not bought and even though so far you've just built it back to stock it's still something you made. Anything you do from here is icing on the cake. I wish I had G35 money to put into my 5th gen, but hopefully it won't be long.

It looks like it sits taller than stock, are there bigger wheels on it or something?

Re: :::LindsO::: 1995 VTEC

I don’t want to play this off like I’ve got loads of cash to spend on a car, I’m far from that guy. The only reason I was looking for a G35 was because I got in a wreck in my Xterra that the Nissan dealership and the insurance company were verging on totaling, so I was planning on using my injury/missed work/whatever else settlement money ($3200) and any funds they would give me to total the Xterra (around $6500 at the time) to put toward a G35 or a 330ci. Well, they were able to fix the Xterra, but I was so pumped about a new car at that point that I was still looking around, and was willing to shell out a monthly payment for a G35.
When my friend came across the Prelude I reanalyzed my financial position. I’ve never had a savings account, and I work for a bank (which isn’t necessarily steady work these days). So all in all, I kept my settlement money and put it away for a rough time, and have lived paycheck to paycheck like I always have because I’m used to it, and have pieced together the Prelude over the past year and a half, almost two years. I’m actually down to nearly 20 hours a week at my job and probably about to get fired, so I’d be on the verge of trying to sell a G35 right about now had that been my decision.

You have inspired me! I feel the need to go down to the shop and do some sanding and repairing dents. omg...

You may never make money off of the 'lude when you sell it but that was never your goal. You are learning to work on a car while restoring and building your own. I would do the same thing now if I was you.

Keep up the great work man. +rep and subscribed because this is too good to miss.

Well, quit my decent paying job at the bank, got another job making way less but I'm much happier. Of course, the downside to this is I can't buy parts as quickly. Still working on it though! Got these recently ;

Thanks man :) WD-40 it while it's cold, drive to the car wash and let it heat up, and high pressure it off. Works just as well as those Engine De-greaser products.

Nothing fun, unfortunately. Last weekend though, I did pay my final car payment, and simultaneously had some 3-year old traffic citations fall off my insurance record so I will have a little extra spending cash every month (after Christmas).

Several weeks ago, I made it out to the drag strip. First time I've ever drag raced. Lots of fun, but I don't really have anything to compare my times to, so I don't know how well I did lol. I did it for more of a baseline to see what the car does stock, and to compare it to what it does when I'm done building it some. Don't know how much it will tell me though, I suck at launching!!

Valves are the next thing on my shopping list, and the final item I need for the valvetrain. I'm gonna replace both the intake and exhaust valves with some nitrite coated Supertech valves. After that I'll be saving for clutch & flywheel, followed by my lingering exhaust components. Then I will be well on my way to a completed shopping list, and I can pull the engine out and get to work :P

Thanks for checking in on me!

-Lindsey
