Icon10 :::NFrank89::: 92 4WS VTEC

1992 Prelude Si 4WS with a JDM h22a Lowered 1.7" in front, 1.5" in back on Neuspeed Sports using Tokico Illuminas . DC header and greddy evo 2 muffler. Rear leather seats. Short shifter adaptor.
Came with a/d/s and boston acoustics speakers

Here's the kicker... I paid $1,900 for this car about 1 week ago :D
Heres the story in pictures:(displayed in order taken. Taken over the last week)

The story in words:
Ahhh the magic of craigslist... so i found this car on craigslist, sat for over a year in a garage, wouldnt start. it was on there for over a month and tons of people i guess came to look at it but no one wanted it. i took a look at it, went home, slept on it and finally decided to pick it up.

i had it towed home and about two hours later i had it running :D

what was the problem? the aftermarket ignition had crapped out. so i bypassed the box and took the factory wires straight to the aftermarket coil and it worked! i had no idea it was going to be that easy i was thinking atleast the dizzy would have to be replaced or something.

so the first pics are the car being towed obviously, you can see my other lude in the first pic (94 silver F22 No mods)
then theres the pics of the first photo shoot after a car wash.
then i decided i would clean the interior. this took about 4 days, i disassembled everything inside the car and scrubbed everything plastic with a toothbrush and all the cloth with laquer thinner and blue coral carpet cleaner (smells really good)
then i put it all back together and the last pictures are of the car reassembled and all shiny (hadnt put the pass seat in yet)

and thats where im at as of right now!
problems:
engine bay is dirty
vtec stuttering issue, when the car hits vtec the car starts stuttering and the rpm needle goes all wacky. it continues to accelerate but not without a few coughs. heres a video, you cant really hear the engine stuttering but it is

I have since fixed this problem by replacing the dizzy!

any ideas? i changed the oil and used 5qts of synthetic. the thing is it still happens when i disconnect the vtec solenoid. so im wondering if its just a bad tach signal that screws up the ecu and causes the studdering. it still happened at high rpms, maybe its just a coincidence that it happens at around where vtec kicks in.

Your igniter in your Dizzy needs to be cleaned or replaced, that is what is causing the tech to have turrets.

You can move the 4ws light to one of the blanks pretty easily. After that you can use any cluster you want without having to worry about the light.
Here's a write up I made when I did it to my car

INT: 4th gen - 4ws Light Relocation

Even though I did it in my EL Cluster wiring harness, is the same process for the analog cluster since I test it on the analog cluster wiring before messing with the EL. I thought about cutting the 4WS plastic in the cluster and moving it to the blank but haven't got around to do it. If you want to do it and have any questions fell free to ask.

And last but not least, the car looks great. And the price makes it even better. Take care.

Re: :::NFrank89::: 92 4WS VTEC

Just open the dizzy and see if any of the connections on the igniter are lose, or have corrosion.

And it is the same part from the F22 and the H22

Re: :::NFrank89::: 92 4WS VTEC

don't mean to thread jack but how come it takes more qts than a f22 then? I've always added only 4qts and double checked it and it's exactly full...

Re: :::NFrank89::: 92 4WS VTEC

i believe its the VTEC, it uses more oil to lubricate the cylinders and junk. im sure someone will come up with a more complex answer but im sure its the vtec

Re: :::NFrank89::: 92 4WS VTEC

Love the car man.

About the oil i think its cause the H22 is a DOHC and the F22 is a SOHC although they share the same block for the most part.

Re: :::NFrank89::: 92 4WS VTEC

vtec blocks have oil squirters in the cylinders or something like that to help accomidate the higher rpm. thats about all i know. look up the G22 swap (F block + H Head) im sure theres tons of info on the differences of the two

yea, I can see how the H22 would require more since there are more moving parts in the head.

Re: :::NFrank89::: 92 4WS VTEC

Nah Its a P13 which means that none of the popular tuning systems support it. Hondata, eCtune, Crome, Neptune, yada yada. Its very possible to chip the ECU since its a OBD1 but tunning is damn near impossible. Most common tunable VTEC ECU's are the P28 out of a EX Civic, and a P72 out of a GSR Teggy.

If you want that extra 20whp you need.
1. A better header. Regardless what anyone says, the best header for the Buck is a Hytech Replica header. about 10whp untunned dyno proven.
2. Freeer Flowing exhaust 2.5" or better yet 3" piping, also dyno proven.
3. 3" CAI
4. Euro-R IM. Rosko sells them pre-modified for US spec EGR, etc.
5. If you got the cash a TB port matched to the IM, and if you got even more money then Port match the Head to the IM and Header too.
6. Then finally a tune.

Note: H22's stock fuel system is good for 250+ HP, and the Honda ignition system does more than that. All you'd need for the fuel system is a Walburo(sp2) fuel pump.

Actually with all that you'd probably be sitting at about 30whp over your current baseline, but with that much better throttle response and a much much better power and torque curve. Now that's all for mostly "Bolt-ons",

Now throw in a H23 crank and rods matched with your S-spec pistons will give much more enjoyable power since it'll mostly be torqued gained, and we all know how much fun torque is over actual HP lol.

Re: :::NFrank89::: 92 4WS VTEC

yeah that was my next question, how to add torque. these engines are ~50 less ft/lb to hp.

torque is fun :D

but you said my s-spec pistons? didnt we just determine that i dont have a s-spec?

Re: :::NFrank89::: 92 4WS VTEC

Lol my bad, i totally forgot. But in any case the S-spec pistons are the same as the Type S witch can be had from http://www.hmotorsonline.com/shop/sc...age&item=10021 for around 2 bills. Personally doing the H23 VTEC is the route i would go if i were staying NA lol. Here read this, you'll find it'll be your guide if you do decide to go that route:

Nice lude! your h22 was manufactured in February 1994!

Here is my tuning experience... I did get some extra torque :)

general talk about chips/tuning.

more ecu chat...

good luck with it man! enjoy the VATTACK!!!!

Anyone who works as hard as you to fix up an older lude gets my respect automatically.
