AFS questions

Say I was to change my headunit. I know I would loose the afs. How much different would it sound. From what I understand it's pretty ahead of its era for audio quality

Re: AFS questions

With todays computer tech for tuning a system it's not all that difficult to think the simulated surround sound of the afbs can be duplicated. And with even better fidelity thanks to titanium and poly technology in speakers.
You could do a pretty good sounding setup. And for not a helluva lot of money. Figure $800 to a grand for total make over with pleasing and reliable results.
F@#k fashion. It's all about the sound, right? The afbs was designed with certain types of music in mind. Sophisticated sounds where sound stage was meant to be like being there... at say a jazz concert or a symphony. So the sound of a piano or say a trombone was what the engineers wanted to faithfully reproduce the sound of. And not just mimic it's notes, but it's location on the stage as well. We yanks introduced Run DMC or Ozzy Osbourne to those cd players. And the results are pretty amazing for the age of the technology.

I'd say the speakers are the weak link in the afbs. Particularly the 6.5" door speakers. Just a smidge more punch in say male vocal frequency would complete the stock system imho.
Say you are listening to a live show, like um, Thin Lizzy in concert. At certain times the singers voice shifts from in front of you to the rear because only the rear speakers of the oem system handle the deeper tone of his low notes. Kinda ruins the soundstage with voices moving in and out of the sweet spot you took so long to fade/balance,bass&treble like you like it.

Or say Jack Johnson tunes with their deep rich bass. The bass notes obviously eminate from the rear speakers. It kinda kills the surround effect.

With that said, the space these cars have in the door requires a slim line speaker unless you modify the opening. Finding slim line 6.5" that have plenty of punch is a daunting thing. Especially if you have a limited budget.
I just repaired my afbs and was thinking of trying some 4" or 6" pyle woofers, in the door with a crossover to cut out the deep notes say below 75htz. Or maybe look into some Bose technology for the door speakers. But that is far off in my plans as that car has 45+/- items to be fixed ahead of improving on the door speakers.

Edit:
If all you listen to is rap.. disregard everything above. Instead, throw away the afbs, put in some large speakers in the trunk, and jam on revenge.

Re: AFS questions

So if I replaced the headunit only would it sound bad because all my speakers work great

Re: AFS questions

No it wouldn't sound bad. If you get a good head unit, it may sound better.
Say a bit brighter and warmer. (As in treble and midtones being richer).

But if you get a $99 unit, you get what you pay for.

Go to several car stereo salons before plunking down your $. Not Best Buy etc. Tell them you are not there to buy one today. See what they sound like through 6x9's and 6.5's.

If you are the diy type, go ahead and install it. If not, have somebody you know understands a good install go behind the installer to ensure the installer didn't hack up your car.

Re: AFS questions

I got 6.5 inchers on my doors and rear, 1 inchers on the dash and 1 12" sub in the back with a 650W amp ('95 lude.)
Any kind of music sounds great, and if I wanted to bump it, I could until the car just rattles out of control. However, I tend to keep it low(ish), med volume and a lot of the settings on my LCD are turned off (e.g. loudness, subwoofer, etc.)
I think my system is overkill for me, but hey, better to have it than want it. :P

Any recommendations for head units? No sure if I would do a classic design or touch screen

Re: AFS questions

From my many years in audio systems, almost 25 now, I have never had any complaints with the following brands.

ALPINE (Currently in both my S2000 and Prelude)
KENWOOD
PIONEER
CLARION

Stay away from and brands sold at Wal-Mart, such as…
SONY
JENSEN
PANASONIC

Re: AFS questions

^^ can't argue with that logic.

I read customer reviews for a while and had settled on a blaupunkt san antonio or san fransico because it looked retro.(volume and tuning knob)
But... no longer in production. Then it was the Kenwood (exscelon?). But ended up inheriting an oem unit. Folks here had good stuff to say about the Kenwood. That was in 2012. Things mighta changed since then.

Touch screen man!
I went with the 7" Pioneer LCD. One of the AVH (I have a thread somewhere) models. Survived a wreck and now it's bolted in my '95 working like a charm as we speak.

Re: AFS questions

I revived this thread to clarify for future people (if they even bother searching for this) that installing an aftermarket head unit WILL NOT disable the AFS system. The stereo (deck/head unit/etc) doesn't know there's an amplifier back there, it just thinks it's driving a pair of speakers. The amplifier under the rear deck is what controls the bass output by listening to what all the speakers are doing and compensating based on an algorithm that someone created. Have subs thumping in the trunk? AFS will cut the bass to the rear speakers, basically becoming a high-pass filter. It adjusts sound output based on predetermined parameters by listening to what the speakers are doing. It operates independently of the head unit and I can confirm that it WILL work with any aftermarket head unit so long as you have the rear speaker outputs connected on it.

Re: AFS questions

So if I was to install an aftermarket head unit and replace all the speakers on my 98 Prelude Sh, then I would have to bypass the AFS in order to get decent sound from the rear? Sorry its my first post and I have a lot of questions lol
