Re: prelude trunk to small for big subs

I have 2 JL Audio 12" subs in a box in my trunk and they fit fine. I have a 5th gen though.

Re: prelude trunk to small for big subs

Dump that big old doodoo box. Hahaha I had two 10s and they kicked just fine. No need to take the spare out and take up all your space. My box leaves at least a foot and a half of space.

Re: prelude trunk to small for big subs

I can tell already that you have a pre-fab box and that is why you are out of trunk space.
I used to have a 4th gen so I know what you are dealing with. You best bet is to spend some $$$ and get a custom box built. I could do it for you, since I have been playing with mobile audio for more than 25 years now. In all that time, I have never used a pre-fab box for any install I have done.

Keep in mind, I started back in the days before fiberglass was a common media for installations. I would have to do everything and anything possible with 3/4 MDF to make my installs presentable. Then as time progressed, I did my research and came up with some pretty impressive themes.

Now with that being said, I would suggest you goto your local audio shop and have them get rid of that eyesore that is taking up all your space for groceries, and let them build something custom.

This is what I came up with in my 93 Si. I was on a budget when I did this, so don't let the gear disappoint. I made due with what I could afford at the time, but with a lot of patients and a good imagination, anything is possible.

Thanks, took me about 12 hours non-stop to do it. I could post up my 5th gen install pics, but this is a 4th gen specific thread.

Maybe it would help OP! The trunks are basically the same shape, just different dimensions. Is it just plywood/carpeting?

Not plywood. The box I made using 3/4" MDF and the amp racks I used 1/2 MDF. I wrapped it in the OEM matched box carpet.

Here is my 5th gen setup. The first pic is obviously before I changed the look that you see in my sig.

Ah. It looks very nice! If I ever decide to get subs, I'll be asking you for help on what to do with an enclosure for sure

I think you are talking about an infinite baffle set up. Back in the day they were pretty good. Not many people use them today, mostly because of the way speakers have evolved, and changed the design. I have only done one set up like that, and believe me, it is more trouble than it is worth. You have to make sure that the area you are putting the speaker in is completely sealed and also make sure that you have the baffle built strong enough to support the weight of the speakers.

Here is what you are talking about though, right?

I just don't think it would work well in our cars.

Oh that is just a typical ported box, not an open air. Usually a ported box requires more cubic footage. I like a sealed box with lots of insulation in it to fool the speaker into thinking its a larger box. Don't ask me how it works, but I am not the only one to do this. Usually when I put the polyfill in, I would use a 1 pound per cubic foot ratio.

This is just my opinion, but that top picture is just overkill.
The bottom one, I have actually done before. I am not sure
if the person actually put the seat back back in the car, but
the concept of using the center console, is one I have done many times.

Re: prelude trunk to small for big subs

I would actually have one big A$$ sub instead of 12 tweeters across the dash…..and I have seen it too. Well I heard it be for I saw it, it was annoying as crap, and sounded like a marching band with nothing but cymbals, with a couple bass drums.

Re: prelude trunk to small for big subs

If u do get another box look for either a 28 inch or 30 inch length box, I used to have 2 12 inch kickers in my 5th gen in a sealed 30" box and it fit perfectly. Just look for a new box, don't flame eBay but they have cheap and decent boxes on there. Now I have one 12 kicker CVX and it's perfect for what I need.

Re: prelude trunk to small for big subs

does anyone make a 6x9 sub? I've looked and didn't find one. Or do you know of a certain one that would be good for lowend?

I just did a Google Search, its amazing what 10 seconds will show you. Now my question is this, why would you want a 6x9 sub? It will not give you any low ground pounding bass. 6x9 are used mostly for mid range and a nice fill kind of bass.

But when I googles 6x9 subwoofer, I was presented with an overwhelming list of them. Most of the ones I saw though where either 2 or 3 way speakers, and not many dedicated to bass only.

Google

LMAO!! We have a wise ass over here!! As stated above, I did search….. I found only one 6x9 sub 'Boston Acoustic' and wasn't even able to find a place to purchase it. The reason I want a 6x9 is to retain the factory optional 6x9 in the rear of my 4th gen. And since I do not know that much about car audio and you guys seemed to know what your talking about I thought to myself, hmmmm I bet these guys might be able to help.

YES I can be a wise ass from time to-----all the time. I guess some of the old time members on here are already used to my antics.

Anyways, back to your original question. I think the rear speakers in the 4th gen, if I am not mistaken were either 5.25 or 6.50 on the rear deck and if you had the V-tec 4th gen, I think it had a 6x9 sub in the center console (vertical section) of the back seat. If you want to replace that, all you need is one 6x9, just find one that is not a 2 way or 3 way, and you will be good to go.

Or do this, its a little custom, but I think it would better serve your needs.
