5th gen audio help

When it comes to audio items, I'm just about at a loss. I have pretty much no experience when it comes to audio, and only slightly more with electrical. With that said, I have a couple questions: 1. My stock head unit is going bad, I hear it's common with these. Everything works fine, but the volume button seems to have a worn out connection...it turns, but the volume does not always change. With a little fiddling i can adjust the volume. Is there a fix for this? And if not, is it worthwhile buying a used stock head unit off someone from here, or any recommendations on a good quality, basic replacement (preferable something I could plug my phone into, whether usb or aux jack). 2. My front (and possibly my rear speakers...haven't gotten that far yet) are shot. The foam is completely gone around the speaker. What do I need to know for a basic replacement? I'm assuming i won't be able to keep the original audio sampling system in the rear...

Re: 5th gen audio help

you can find a stock replacement for real cheap...just make sure you get the security code with it. as far as the speaker replacement....search search search. before you get flamed there is about 20 threads that talk about replacement speakers

Yeah I know...don't mean to ask a stupid/overused question...but like I said I'm lost when it comes to the lingo. I'll do some more research.

Re: 5th gen audio help

First off-- DO NOT BUY Anything That says Sony Explode on it. period-- they are CRAP Head units, speakers, and amplifiers.

If you are going to use a stock HU from your generation then it is as easy as plug and play. Especially in a 5th gen---the radio is uber easy to get to.

However......

For your "Experience level" -- annnnnd...If you are not going to keep the stock HU then I highly recomend hooking up with a brick n mortar store and let them take care of you from sales through installation and warranty. It may seem like more $$$ but look at what you are getting for the price.

*More power - louder and cleaner/clearer sound.
*No installation headaches- wire harnesses, adaptors, wire, connectors, etc, etc.
*Most stores (Best Buy included) sale systems in packages called " A Deck and Two" or a Deck and Four." Which means you are getting a compatibler head unit and speakers, either two or four.
*Adaptability when the car audio bugs hits you and you want to start upgrading your system to include amplifiers, subwoofers, etc.
*almost any new aftermarket HU for sale now has some sort of Aux input to play your i-pod/Android/MP3 player or USB port for an external [thumb] drive.

We have posted a TON of infomration in the ICE forum and in the DIY Electronics and Audio section of the forum.. I suggest spending some time reading and strengthening your knowledge so you get exactly what you want when you hit the streets for some new sounds.

Not everyone has hundreds of dollars to spend on a stereo.

Re: 5th gen audio help

here we go again.... it has been proven over and over and over that a person that buys a POS Stereo like Sony Expode crap (at least it was appropriatly named--ie: it will explode and let all the magic smoke out) You may spend $100 on the essplode garbage but I PROMISE you you will be replacing it and spending another $100 for a like unit. OR, you can get a better head unit that will last 5 times as long.

Here is a POS SONY head unit which I assure you will break the bank (repairs and flat out dying) : Sony Xplod CDX-GT65UIW Car CD Receiver, CD Receiver with USB, Sony Car CD Receiver, In-Dash CD Receiver

and here is a better Head unit with the same features and you are getting reliable name brand products:
Kenwood: Kenwood KDC-BT648U/RB Car MP3 CD Players at Onlinecarstereo.com
Kenwood KDC-HD552U Car MP3 CD Players at Onlinecarstereo.com

Alpine:
Alpine CDE-122 Car MP3 CD Players at Onlinecarstereo.com

Sony does NOT Care about the car audio industry like they used to. If you can find an old school Sony HU then Snatch that bugger up because back in the day they were worth their salt...(circa mid 80's and early early 90's) not so much any more. There is a reason they sale that garbage equipment in Walmart. - Just sayin.

Same goes for the following Brands: Boss Audio, Pyle, Dual,

FYI: Your argument about price and affordability + Reliability is invalid.. try again.

Re: 5th gen audio help

My sister bought a sony explode headunit new in 2000 along with sony amp and subwoofer and the system has been in 5 cars without any problems...ever. every car she put atleast 40k miles on a year and never had a problem. so it's defintly getting used because she travels alot for work.

My cousin got a sony HU in 2005 with for his new GTO and it's been fine without any problems. Added a sony amp with JL subwoofers (tight fit in the GTO trunk)

I've had a flip up Sony dvd HU with Sony Headrest tvs in My silverado since 2007 without any issues along with JL amp and MTX subwoofers.

Have one in the prelude that never had any issues with along with Sony explode amp and subwoofers.

So from my experince i've NEVER had a problem with a sony headunit amp or subwoofer. plus i know mutiple friends who have had sony headunits, amps and or subwoofers with any problems.

Do i claim that a sony product has never failed?...of course not every company has products that fail but from my experience i've never had a problem with Sony so i have no problem using a sony product.
Am i saying that Sony is the best company ever and everyone should buy from them? no..it's your choice of what you buy but for me the price and quality is well worth it.

Therefore........

My argument=Valid

Re: 5th gen audio help

I wouldn't get a sony explode, I put those in the same category as the jvc and even those Jensen decks. I'll stick with a kenwood, pioneer, or an alpine. I have a stock 5th gen deck with the radio code that I'm not using.

Re: 5th gen audio help

As said in previous post, Explode (well the name fits). I have had 3 Preludes since 1997, and I have always put in quality gear. I started on a budget in my 86 Si, so I went with JVC, Jensen, and Lanzar. Well after doing my research when I got my 93 Si, I stepped up my game and went with Alpine and MTX. Now in my current 98, it is 100% Alpine (well 97%) with the exception of the XM Commander the PS2, and the DVD player in the glovebox and MobileTV video monitor.

But as if now I have an Alpine Headunit, 12 Disc Changer, Audio/Aux Selector module, Type R 8s (yet to be installed) 6x9 and 6.5 components in the doors.

I think there are still some pics of mine set up in the new members thread.

But do what you can afford, but do it smartly. Start with a head unit that has 3 pairs of RCA outputs, so you can expand later if you choose that route. I got mine all at once and I spent close to $3500 before I installed everything. Then about another $200 on power, speaker, ground, and RCA cables along with a power and ground distribution blocks.

Good Luck !!!
