Audi relying on Honda

http://www.rs246.com/index.php?name=...=66497&start=0

know you're not supposed to believe everything you read on Wikipedia, but the following extract from the RS4 page was interesting and not something I'm sure Audi would readily admit to

Quote:
...Honda was contacted and at the time had been using V8s in IRL and Audi wanted a similar package in performance and reliability so Honda and Mugen(M-Tec) got together and decided to let Audi use the Mugen/Honda MF308 V8 engine which Audi prepped in 1999-00, testing and remanufacturing designs implemented/approved and raced in 2004, the engine produced 460 bhp (343 kW) (over 500 Nm of torque) in 4.0 litre trim and has been a mainstay in Audis DTM program and the design used was the basis for the B6/S4-B7 RS4 4.2 litre V8 (which many thought was a redesign of the old Audi V8 Quattro design but really wasn't,was changed to a 4 valve per cylinder design vs previous 5 valve) which some might argue would technically be Hondas first roadcar V8 engine...

whether this is true or not it seems to be quiet interesting. I kinda sorta have the same wow feeling when I found out that Yamoha made all toyota's turbo engines back in the day. you'd never thought that.

It wouldn't surprise me the least. Porsche uses technology licensed from Titsusquishi for their tiptronic gearboxes, and the Titsusquishi MIVEC variable valve timing is nothing more than a licensed copy of Honda's VTEC.

Then you get the other side of the coin, where you have the Ford Focus, Mazda 3 and a Volvo whose name escapes me atm which are all the same car. Volvo were developing a new engine, Ford the suspension and Mazda the floorpan, and the result was that all three have a new car.

Brands sharing technology/equipment is nothing new. So while I agree that you never really take everything you read in wikipedia as being gospel, there's probably an element of truth there.

Well, Mazda have bought most of themselves back from Ford if you wanna get technical, I think Ford only own about 33% of Mazda these days.

But who owns what company is beside the point; here are competing companies, with products in the same category as each other technology sharing.
