black soot in exhaust & knocking sound

hey all

i just bought a 98 SH Prelude for a very good price but there are some problems. i just had an out of province inspection done but they never said anything about these problems.

Black soot or oil like globs are being sprayed out the exhaust and it seems like the car has less power

im hearing a knocking sound when my engine runs i have notice that it dose not fluctuate and seems to be comeing from under my engine

from my oil cap

engine

i was thinking of redoing the engine and puting a supercharger in does anyone have anyideas on whats wrong and the best thing i could do in this situation

thanks

black soot is pretty normal due to the nature of the engines and that they naturally run a little bit rich...but as for the knocking sound does it get louder when you press the gas

it might be that you just need a valve adjustment...what is your idle at now? and does the noise only happen at idle?

my idle is 1.5 i think... someone recommended a valve adjustment is it bad (will it damage my car) to drive the car if it needs that?

or what about cam bearings?

1,500 seems a bit high to me i think it should be about 1k. If it was the valves the sound would get faster when the revs go up. What is your oil level at ?

your idle should be around 800...get the valve adjustment and see if that fixes it

what do they do to adjust your valves? Do you just take it to any car shop and say hey my prelude is making a knock noise could you see if my valves need adjusting? I'm askin because my 01 base prelude makes a knocking noise if I accelerate hard, and the sounds gets faster the harder I accelerate, it happens more at lower RPMs whats the deal?

dude, to edjust your valves, they do just that, put a feeler guage inbetween the rocker and valve and tigthen it till it feels right. Don't know if things like firestone do them, but I know dealerships do. As far as the base prelude making a knock as you accelerate that gets faster and louder, kinda sounds like the symptom of a rod knock, did you neglect the oil changes?

im impressed. you actually know how to adjust valves.... i dought its your valves cause it wouldnt be a knocking sound it would be a ticking sound, like this it sounds like a clock ticking... this is a rod knocking ... very differnt sound... id say shoot a small video and post it up n most likely some one will beable to tell you...

and for the soot the back of my car has a black film on it... like some one said before its just the nature of the engine.. all it is, is just excess oil burning and depending on the exshaust you have it can very from the amount that is on the car... i have an older used muffler that had been on a car before that smoked like a feight train... i have about 7x the amount that you do

and for my input... if your gonna redue the engine it self n put a sc on it...just pull the hole engine and redue the hold engine top to bottom... all new bearings, seals, hone the cyclender linings n this is also a good time to get new pistions( such as lower compression pistons) maybe even a crank sense your gonna boost it.... its very hard to damage these engines.. ive had mine close to bone dry and it ran for about 2000 miles that way..but every engine is diff.. thats just my 2 cents..

edit... just thought of this also it could be your injectors... on my buddys boosted 99 ek si an injector went bad and it sounded also like a loud knocking noise

well if it is getting louder as you accelerate that is rod knocking not valve tapping.

also if you do plan to rebuild the engine and decide to get it honed then make sure you take it to a machine shop that understands what FRM sleeves are. im just mentioning it b.c i read somewhere about the way these type of sleeves have to be done

the only differnce in the sleeves from a normal sleeves quoting a guy from Honda of america " the only differnce in the sleeves are that they have a ceramic coating on them" which i think the guy was an idiot and didnt know anything about it at all... and a valve tick would get faster an sometimes louder as the engine rev'd up... i had a ticking valve on my old engine before it desided to take a **** on me...

It sounds similar to the first vid. My guess is that its your tappets which need adjusting. Change the oil as well. I know a guy who had different tappet noise with different kind of oil. Get an oil change with decent oil and see what happens if you don't want to get it adjusted.

i have the same issue right now with my h23, i put 5w30 in mine with a little marvel mystery oil, and some of that think ring seal stuff, only cause my car was smoking , due to a bad head gasket, but now it's not smoking anymore i replaced the gasket. But mine does have a valve tick just as you say your does,i'm gonna end up changing the oil real soon and maybe putting some thicker stuff in for the time being, till i get a valve adjustment, but you need to get that done at some point.
