Crank Seal changing? how easy is it?

I finally had my urethane motor mounts fitted and found that my crank seal has been leaking for some time.

I have been meaning to do the timing belt and balancer belt anyway and wanted to know how big of a job is it to do the crank seal replacement?

if u have everything off for doin the tbelt then there is not too much more to take off. pull of the gear thing and then there is a washer behind it. just dont loose the pin that is in the notch to keep the gear from spinning then just dig out the old one and when u put in the new one make sure u press it in as even as possible...i think i used a big socket that would fit over the end of the crank so even pressure was applied also dont cheap out on the seal get a good one

also when u are about to put on the new seal coat the inside of the seal with some oil with your finger to keep the inside lip from folding when u put it on.

is it common for this part to develop a leak?..too right..i never cheap out on crucial parts. lol

umm over a long time maybe. i never had a problem with the main seal but my balancer shaft seal blew out on me. when i changed mine it didnt look like it had been leaking at all but i would just do it while u had everything off. i would change the balacer shaft seal and the cam seals while u are at it... just for preventative measures. i have changed ever seal on my engine but the rear main cuz u have to drop the tranny to get that one

lol didnt think i needed to tell u about cheaping out on parts

if your able to do the entire timing belt job by yourself, then changing the seals is gonna be no problem.
i did all of mine by taking the oil pan off when the motor was outta the car, but you dont really need to do that. since its an old seal anyway and you dont care about damaging it, you can pry it out w/ a screwdriver being careful not to scratch anything.
but to install it, like 94 said, apply even pressure. i used a 2x4 that was as wide as the seal, and a hammer

its kind of common for these seals to go, but since they're so cheap and you have EVERYTHING taken off anyway... why not change it? ya dig?

my whole oil pump housing was leaking and i fixed that with the motor in the car lol

gets some beer and go at it man

Yeah I don't know about that front (driver side) seal, but the rear main seal was very easy. Just make sure it goes in evenly like those guys said. I used a 2x4 like nick, and then just carefully and delicately tapped it until it sat the way I thought was completely even. No more drips =).

changing all the seals are exactly the same, whether its the rear main, crank seal, or balancer shaft seal.
the trick is getting the old seals out which is why i completely removed the right side cover and oil pump so i could push them out from behind. you guys got any pointers to get them out from the front instead of having to mess w/ aligning the balancer shafts and all that ish by taking the earl pan off?

i used a metal punch to dig into the seal until i broke through the metal or u could use a flat head screw driver to dig into it also. then took a dental pick to pull it out... they also sell things that look like them at auto parts stores. and no i didnt use the dental pick after that

i dont think there is really any way to get the balancer seal off without removing the sprocket thing then having to realign it.

yea you gotta take the balancer gear off to do that seal, which isn't that bad cuz you gotta realign the shafts when your doing a t-belt/b-belt anyways.
