Clunking noise

Hey guys, I just finished my clutch job and she is driving nicely =).

I have a new problem though. There is clunking noise coming from my passenger side wheel that is somewhat unnerving. I know I need new tie rods, but we tightened them down extremely tight until my tie rods come in (they should be in shortly).

The noise happens when coasting in a straight line. It increases/decreases speed along with the actual speed of the vehicle. It makes the noise in gear as well as out of gear (so i don't believe it's a problem with the transaxle, unless it's the axle itself). The noise for the most part goes away while accelerating and/or braking.

Also, I am experiencing a slight amount of noise every once in a while while engaging/disengaging the clutch, but it doesn't seem to me affecting the ride at all... am I right to just assume that this noise is normal until the clutch is fully broken in? I have probably only put about 20 miles on it since the job was finished.

Careful on that clutch brake in...i'd drive it soft for a while....as far as the clunking noise, have you checked your cv boots? Maybe there is something loose from the install job.

It could very well be the axle nut, we didn't have a 36mm socket so we just tightened it as much as we possibly could with an adjustable wrench... I will have to go and get a 36mm socket so I can torque it to spec (181ft-lbs correct?). I have a torque wrench already... just not the right socket.

Thanks guys... can't wait to get her running full tilt again! =)

Hey guys, I'm starting to worry that the clunking may be my axle itself and not just the nut... I haven't found out for sure yet, but if I do indeed replace the entire axle, is it completely necessary to buy the 215 dollar honda oem axle???

Anybody have any experience with aftermarket original equipment quality axles? Namely these GSP guys that MAC Motors sells?

Or these EMPI ones from pro street?

when H4L still worked for honda i got my 2 axles from him for $150 for both after returning the old ones for a core charge. see if your local honda dealer can do that.
if not, the ones you posted look decent.

but i'm pretty sure bad axles only click when going around turns, not going straight.
could be wrong tho.

It could very well be your sway bar end links. I had problems with mine after installing an aftermarket sway bar. When i finally replaced them months later, after clunking all over the place...the bushings looked like they had been the target of a nuclear attack of some sort. check those little bastids.

well it could be a lot of things but the wheel will be lose if your axle nut isnt tight enough so try tightening that first. if you need to buy a new axle, go to an auto store and buy one with a core charge, it ended up costing me like $69

Hehehe problem solved...

I don't wanna say what it was, but I will anyway lol... it deserves a dummy slap.

Loose lugs =P

My grandfather slapped them on and told me he tightened them pretty well, but I figured I'd check them today just on a whim.... 2 of my lugs on my driver side wheel were about 3 turns away from falling off all together. Tightened them down to 80ft-lbs... no more clunking =). I'm glad I checked lol.

Dude.... I got 2 axles for 150 so just watch where u buy them. I can grab you a set if you'd like. From what it sounds like its your axle. Mine was doing the EXACT same thing. it just got really bad when I was turning. If you do decide to replace axle(s) hit me up with a pm. I get them for cheap.
