when you dont have enough power to get anywhere off the starting line lol.

You clutch it again so your RPMs bounce up and you "get more power".

Either way its for the SLOW cars

Double clutching basically is an old technique used for cars that didn't have synchro's... (or cars that have bad synchros).

It's when you hit the clutch to shift as you normally would... but then you shift into neutral, RELEASE the clutch, hit the clutch again, and then put it in your desired gear. It allows the speeds of the transmission and engine to match eachother a bit before engaging the desired gear.

For example, a double clutch from 2nd to third would go as follows.
1) Hit the clutch in 2nd, hold it
2) Shifter into neutral position, release clutch
3) Hit the clutch again in neutral, hold it
4) Shifter into 3rd position, release clutch.

It's the same for downshifting... Allows the transmission and motor to "rev match" a little bit before the shift takes place...

It's the same idea, as "rev matchin" your downshifts...

Or when they pop the hood to Paul Walkers eclipse and there is no turbocharger or intercooler in sight while he's talking about the ridiculous amount of boost he runs lol.

Actually what Vin Diesel speaks of is a misconception of what double clutching is. What Vin Diesel and 99preludesh thinks of when they hear double clucthing is probably what 85% of all people think but what they are doing is just holding the clutch, not disengaging gears, revving the motor to a higher RPM, then slipping the clutch or just dumping it completely which will help you break tarction, if you have enough power, in that next gear and it will also assist you in destroying your clutch that much sooner. While Badmofo is correct about the concept, double clucthing isn't just limited to old cars without synchros. And here is what I mean.

Without getting too into it, the synchros have a hard job on their hands if you depress the clutch, move the shift lever out of gear, move the lever into the next gear, and then let the clutch out.

To make it easier on the system, You depress the clutch, slide the shift lever into neutral, let the clutch out, then rev-match, depress the clutch again, engage the next gear, and finally let the clutch out.

Since you're disengaging and reengaging the clutch two times within one gear shift, it's called DOUBLE-CLUTCHING. That period in neutral where you let the clutch back out allows the synchros and the engine to spin at similar speeds so they don't have to do as much work.

So in short rev matching and double clutching can prolong teh life of your transmission and clutch.

^Absolutely correct... It's worthwile to note, however, that you only need to blip the throttle (or "rev-match") on downshifts... obviously when upshifting, blipping the throttle won't bring the two rotational speeds any closer to eachother since the motor side is already spinning faster than the transmission side.

The point I was trying to make was that while double-clutching is beneficial on a synchronized transmission, it is not at all necessary. Yes it will prolong the life of your transmission, and help smooth out shifts, but it completely unnecessary...

On an unsynchronized transmission... it is absolutely necessary to double clutch to prevent damage to the transmission gearing.

I love how the floor falls out of the Eclipse then Vin Diesel jumps in and puts his feet on the floor.
