Engine type question?

Ok, so I don't have a prelude yet. I'm in the market for one. I have found that my favorite body style in imports is the prelude. My previous car was a Honda civic si which I traded for an SUV for my wife. I don't know anything about preludes. Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction. I want to get a good engine that I can do good mods with and get some decent hp out of, but boo all you like I want an auto. I'm getting lazy and am tired of sticks, just want to put it in drive and go-go lol. I mean if later on down the line I change my mind I'm sure I can ( rip, bang, clank, ) make a switch lol. The only 2 that I have found is a 01 sh and 01 vtech. The sh was a stick though. I also know I want a 5th gen preferably 01. Sorry if this sounds completely noob, but I am a complete noob to the prelude scene. just want to get some expert opinions before I make a purchase and regret it, because I got the only unmodable model, or not worth moding model. Thanks for all your help.

01 a fine year for the lude the SH handles a lil better then the base but the base dries like its on rails. an auto will not let you down take off is the main diff. plenty of mods of there for the 5tg gen

Yup...any 5th gen prelude, is a good prelude lol... I prefer a manual trans instead of an auto, you get more power from a manual and it makes the car funner to drive I think. All in all if you get a 5th gen prelude you will have the H22 to work with...which means your pretty much golden.

If you want a later model, then the 00-01 autos should be ok. The four speed tiptronic/sports shift mated to the 97-01 Preludes has a well documented failure rate, but the problems were pretty much fixed by the time the 99 facelift was released. I've had my 00 for a while and is't showing no signs of failure yet.

The H22 is a very modable engine, and can net good gains in HP (+25%) from just the simple intake/header/exhaust/tune combo. Much more than that will require huge amounts of coin to be invested.

Your wish of an auto pretty much eliminates the fourth generation (92-96) as the only autos are mated to the F22 or H23, both of which can be modded, but aren't worth it IMHO. Privately imported fourth gen Preludes may have the H22 mated to a four speed auto, but you have to sit in the passenger seat.

Interesting. 11 grand for a Base with 91K...That thing must be in great condition. Look on cars.com. That's where I found mine.

P.S. Before you get flamed, I'll just put my .08 in. it's vtec. Just watchin out.

Spelling vtec wrong doesn't go over too well with these characters.

Just like any other Honda, these babies are bulletproof as long as they have been properly maintained, regular oil changes (more often than 3k miles once they get higher mileage on them), and the most important thing... make sure the timing belt has been... and always will be... serviced on time according to the maintenance schedule.

Also... I'd like to note that all SH's are stick... they do not come automatic... so you are limited to the base model.

It's also worth mentioning that H22's consume a pretty high amount of oil... especially in vtec, that's why they should be regularly maintained. Also... while these babies are very modifiable.... they are also very expensive to modify. Shop around and look at the price difference between b series mods and h22 mods.... you'll be pretty shocked... Worth every penny IMHO though.

Oh... and also... the edit function seems to be malfunctioning lately... it's not that you don't have enough posts... that's why I am triple posting... I'm usually not a post whore, but since I can't edit, I will throw up a triple post =)

triple posting ftw!

Also...All mod's for the H22, big and small, will only be able to pull a considerable amount of power from the engine with a proper tune. anything past i/h/e and a few others is gonna cost you an arm and a leg, and maybe even a left nut.

Thats why I've exploited the handling magic that is the Prelude. I've come to realize that suspension mods are much more satisfying than engine mods. YAY!

Yea dude. LT1, the LS1 Iron-headed cousin, and different cam profile.

The LT4 HOTcam kit for the LT1 is like 600 bucks and pulls about 35whp.
Bang for the buck mods YAY!

Yeah... not to thread jack this thread more than it already has been... but as far as bang for the buck performance mods go... you can't really mess with any of the Chevy small blocks... They have a WIDE variety of parts available for them, and for dirt cheap compared to the lude counterparts...

For instance, my girlfriend's uncle has an 89 IROC-Z camaro with an L98 Small block 350 in it... Only like 240 hp stock but has about 340 ft-lb of torque... He put about 2 grand into that car and he's hitting 12s all day...

My uncle's camaro ran 13.49 bone stock in 98 from the factory with an Automatic transmission... he got it into the 11s with intake, headers, test pipes, and a 75 shot of nitrous.... That's bang for your buck there lol.

LoL, This thread has taken on a mind of its own! Yea, Right now I'm driving a cavalier with a 2200. It seems to me that every car I get just happens to have the engine that nothing real can be done with. Take the cavalier for example the 2200 is the only one that is literally laughed at and told to swap no matter what. It's my wife’s old car I'm driving it cause I go farther to work so she drives the Trailblazer. She wanted an SUV anyway I really only like to drive small cars ,funner that way. Hence the reason I asked about the prelude engine types I don't want to get screwed again. I, Also am very interested in the suspension setup. Once, I find one I want I plan on it being my forever car, I want to go all out with it. I'm not really lookin to leave a trail of fire behind my wheels as I take off, but I do want some good get up and go.

There's a few good suspension combos around for reasonable money mate, all depends on what you want.

For jsut *spirited* street driving, occasional track days to mainly track occasional street driving. Have a search around these boards, and if you still haven't found what you're looking for come back and ask.
