I need your help! It's drivin me nuts!

hey everyone i am in need of your help. i was just sitting in my lude and noticed that the temp guage just decided to sky rocket out of no where. it was only running for like 3 min so i didnt know why it was doing it. just in case i decided to change the thermostat. (it was put in correctly) and i let it run for like 10 min so it got into operating temp then took it out. I made it 1/2 mile and it pegged out again. I had people telling me that it might be a sensor and just to ignore it. well thats not an easy thing to do. It wasnt running any different at all. and there was no mix of oil in the coolant or visa versa. sometimes it goes down, sometimes it doesnt. its just driving me nuts! I think it might be a radiator thing because my top hose is hot and my lower hose is ice cold. but i dont know if that explains why i am losing coolant at a ridiculous level. I need help!!! any input would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Mark

Sounds like your radiator and hoses need to be flushed...

Also... are you actually loosing coolant??? You originally said that your temp gauge was going up but you didn't know why... but at the end of your post you said you are loosing coolant at a ridiculous level.... which one is it? Is it leaking or not?
