5th Gen H22a Concern

I drive a '97 and its got about 115xxx miles on it...

i was driving around my town normally shifting no higher than 3,000rpms.. when i shifted into 4th, it felt like the motor just lost power, the rpms dropped and it felt sluggish.. then a nasty "knocking" noise started coming the motor, what seemed to be from the head..

basically, im just wondering if anyone has any suggestions, advice, or experiences with this situation..

thanks guys!

can you be a lil more specific?
so the engine still runs?

knocking is usually the bottom end, and tapping is usually the head

the motor is still running, but doesnt seem to run as strong as it typically does. the noise that i can hear is coming from the head, and its more of a clanking, tapping noise, and its usually loudest at idle and after 2k rpm's..

Start it up and use a long strew driver, place the tip on the valve cover. then rap your hand around the top of the strew drive as if you are trying to stap the valve cover. Place your ears on top of your now balled up fist and listen. YOu should be able to tell if the nois is coming from the head. you can also do the same thing to the block as well. It will highten the noise by listening closer. Sort of like a sea shell effect.

I recommend checking the timing belt for a slipped belt or other problems like a loose cam gear bolt etc.

i took it to a shop (havent driven it since then..) and had the ECU scanned.. there are some minor issues that are easy fixes.. but the bigger problem is that the 3rd cylinder is misfiring... in an attempt to fix the 3rd cylinder i replaced some of the small/ obvious parts.. i got a new distributor cap & rotor.. new plugs & wires.. and replaced the pcv valve cuz that went..

its still not running the way it should be and the 3rd cylinder is still misfiring.. before i jump to any bigger assumptions such as valve or cam problems.. could it be anything else preventing the cylinder to fire correctly.. fuel injectors??

thanks for the help!

Have you tried checking the resistance of the injector? I don't know what it should read but that is how I diagnosed injector failures on other cars. Like someone said above you can hold a screw driver to the injector and hear if it is working.
