First Car, First Prelude.

This may seem like it should go in the "New Luders" section, but I decided to forgo that right of passage in light of a few questions I have about my new car.

First some background then on to the questions. I got my pearl white 99' base Prelude yesterday with 118k miles, an SH spoiler with the working brakelight, an aftermarket exhaust system that I have not cared to check the brand/model of, and a few minor flaws. I paid 5500, which isn't great, but I think is far from bad.

Now on to the questions. There seems to be a switch where the cigarette lighter would normally go. I was wondering if anyone could identify it for me. There are wires that were run for a sound system, but I can't imagine they have anything to do with the switch, but then again I have no clue. It is lightly folded in the middle so the either the top or bottom portions of the switch protrude when the opposite portion is pressed in.

Some minor flaws that bug me but definately didn't turn me off to the car are missing Prelude stickers on the back which clearly left residue, some kind of residue around the back "H" badge a missing ashtray in the front and I know US models didn't come with one for the back. And a missing cover for that entire lower console/cupholder area. If someone could tell me some good sources to find replacement parts/stickers (preferably stock, but anything will do) that would be amazing. On that same note I just remembered that the boot on my stick won't stay up properly, I'm not sure if it's stock or not, but at the very least the knob was changed.

Aside from all that the plastic and vinyl that make up the dash, console, radio, miscellaneous buttons, etc. needs a good cleaning. The plastic pieces don't seem to want to come clean, but I can scratch it with my fingernail and it becomes a little cleaner. I was wondering if I could use black plastic polish (I hear Mothers is good) to clean up the radio and other plastic components. Also some suggestions on cleaners in general would be awesome because I plan on detailing the car myself, but I don't know what products actually work well.

Now pictures. I'll post exterior pics later, my camera died after about 4 pictures.

The switch is at the bottom left of the radio

A closer shot of the switch.

This is the missing portion of the center console and ashtray.

Thanks. And I apologize for being so forward and noobish. I don't want to take anyone or anything for granted here.

Edit: If my pictures are too big or need to be thumbnailed or only html links, let me know.

1st off: welcome to our site

2nd: if the car previously had a system in it, that switch could possibly be a switch for the amp, to turn the system on or off at your leisure.

3rd: get some goo-gone, that usually gets alot of the residue off the trunk thats left when taking the badges off.

4: for all your cheap, OEM parts needs, bookmark this site:

that switch is the uber-rare jdm eject button... to eject your passenger when they tell you how to drive.

Wow. Thanks for all of the quick responses. Very helpful. I just did a quick check on the car and found that the exhaust is GReddy and it has aftermarket gas shocks on at least the back wheels. There are also a couple of strange items under the hood. I'm also missing the heat shield :(. Can anyone post some under-the-hood pics of their stock (yeah right) Prelude so I have some means of comparison. There are, at the moment, apparently a number of modifications I'm unaware of. I don't think there's too much more, but there were some items that seemed a bit new or just out of place under the hood.

Also, would it be a good idea to get a heat shield considering I'm missing mine or does it not really matter?

I can post pics upon request.

Also, if anyone who doesn't have a non-stock Prelude could just explain or MSpaint whatever non-stock parts they have.

Again, thanks a lot. I'm completely new to all of this, so if I start to ask too many questions or too many stupid questions, just let me know. I learn fast, so I hope to quickly become a more contributing member of the site.

Edit: I'm not sure which model GReddy the exhaust is, but it is LOUD, like can't-hear-the-radio-or-someone-talking-loudly loud. It is also pretty consistently deep, never gets that rice-rocket whine to it. I can post pics by request.

check the stickies at general tech talk and the 5th gen forum. you'll get answers to most of your questions... like what's stock and what mods are available. the heat shield is unnecessary. many of us don't have it.

oh and welcome by the way.

Wow. That's all stock? I guess theres a bit more than I thought under my hood. At first glance, I have an aftermarket intake and I'm not completely sure but I have some sort of a fuel-filter looking device in the top left. I'm just going to go snap a few pics post em up.

welcome to the site man. get a stock shift knob. the one you have is too tall and goofy. looks like it's for an automatic too.

I have another shift knob that is a bit smaller, but it's scratched all to hell and is chrome, so it looks like crap. The knob itself has the gears "engraved" on the top, so I certainly hope that it's not for an automatic, haha.

Anyway, I would like to retract my previous statement, on there being a lot under the hood. Looks like just an intake, a sway bar??, and something on one of the wires running from the fusebox. I assume it's a cap for the soundsystem that was in it, but, again, I really have no clue.

Full shot, no heat shield, aftermarket intake and bar visible

Another closer shot, nothing special

What I assume is a sway-bar. There is another similar bar in the trunk.

Here is what I suspect is a cap or something for the audio system

And this is where I look like a complete idiot. I don't know what this is, but I would suspect it's stock.

Excuse my extreme ignorance in these matters. Thanks again for all the help,

Civic? Haha. That's great.

The bar in the trunk is pretty far in the back and spans the width of the car. It's also about 5/8ths of the way above the floor of the trunk.

While I'm posting, a quick question. My car is LOW and has kinomo or something gas shocks. I'll post the exact brand tomorrow. And I was wondering if gas shocks were generally adjustable.

I was also wondering if there was any way to drop the decibel level of the exhaust. It's way loud, and I can't even hear the radio. Not to mention I don't want the extra attention. Or to wake up everyone in the neighborhood.

Thanks again. Pics by request. I'll get some exterior pics up tomorrow if the weather is good.

what you have are front and rear upper strut tower braces. under the hood and in the trunk.
you can purchase a silencer from greddy for your muffler. check their website.

sounds like you have koni shocks. unless you have adjustable coilovers, you can't adjust the gas shocks. certain shocks have adjustable damping. I'd need to see pics to tell what you have.

Well here are some pictures of my TOKIGO Adjustable gas shocks. This is a bit unnerving because the strut bars don't look like the best on the market and Tokigo isn't a recognizable name to me. This leads me to believe that the guy who owned the car wasn't worried terribly about quality. Then again, I'm probably just being paranoid. Here are some pics of the exhaust, trunk strut bar, and the shocks.

Here is the strut bar in the trunk.

Here's a pic of the shocks. At the top you can make out where it says adjustable.

Pic of the exhaust.

And a closer one. The tailpipe seems to be welded onto the muffler in an odd fashion. But checking under the muffler earlier, it also said GReddy. I couldn't make out the model so if someone could identify it I would be appreciative.

So what do you think about the modifications? Please be honest because your opinions really are the only gauge that I have for the quality of the parts and the worksmanship.

Again thanks for all of the info. ImPorTuNeRdJ gets special thanks for the pic. And ogsmakdade (OG Smack-daddy?, haha) for the knowledge and suggestions gets x2. Everyone else gets free hugs. Platonic hugs.

Edit: I think it's an EVO2, but the EVO2 supposedly has good sound suppression. You almost have yell over mine.

Forgive me if I'm being extremely stupid, but I combed over the GReddy's site a good couple of times and didn't find anything about silencers. I googled it, and there seem to be some 3rd party silencers but I'd like a GReddy silencer if they offer them.

From what I heard Tokico Illuminas are quality gas shocks also theyre expensive(check em on ebay). Also all I've heard from greddy owners is nothing but good stuff I wouldn't mind having one either.

Well I have learned a little since I first posted. The Tokico Illumina are supposedly low to midrange adjustable (5 different settings) that are a good deal better than stock, but no super-performance part. GReddy does not offer silencers, but resonators can be put on(in?) and at least one exhaust company offers silencers in the correct size, but has a disclaimer saying they are only for their specific exhaust ( I think it was the n1 or something). I also learned that shocks only reduce the bounciness of springs to improve performance, not provide more cushion for the pushin'.

I know this is all probably painfully obvious to anyone with a brain, but I've only had a car for a week. We all have to start somewhere right?

Anyway, after giving the car a quick scrub yesterday, I noticed a lot more dings and scrapes than I would have liked, but most aren't really noticeable.

I'll post pics later today probably.

Also, as a side note, after reading a bit up on vtec, h22, and h23, (and also taking the car out for a bit of a *AHEM* sporty drive) I humbly request admittance to the bandwagon.

LOL.. SIG'D

your admitted to the h22 bandwagon, its more of a join if you want to thing lol.

also welcome to the site guy!

And that exhaust does look like a Greddy Evo2, if im not mistaken, and is like 450$ new (for a catback variant). It does kind of look like it is just the muffler, idk if you can buy the Evo2 as just a muffler though. Its a nice exhaust, but i can understand if its to loud for you.
