Some clutch install questions

Aight... so as some of you may have read, I was supposed to get a free clutch install done in exchange for a bit of welding I was gonna do... Well, that fell through... the dude is busy at work and will have no free time till mid-May, and the lude is my DD so I need her runnin before then...

Well... I think I'm gonna suck it up, be a man, and do it myself... My grandfather told me I could use his garage and tools (I have no garage at my house, and I don't feel like doing it on the street in the freezing cold lol), and I'm hoping my trusty honda helms manual will walk me through the process.

Here's my questions:

What are some tools that I will definitely need? Keep in mind... I don't have access to an compressor or any air-tools, I already have a 1/2" drive torque wrench (I might buy/rent a 3/8" drive for some of the smaller stuff... the 1/2" drive one is like 3 feet long lol), and I have access to a 3-ton floor jack, but not a purpose-built transmission jack. (Can't I just carefully use the floor jack to lower the transmission? If not, couldn't I just get one of those transmission adapters that you put on your floor jack? I don't wanna buy a transmission jack when I'll probably only use it once).

How hard of a job will this be for me? I've never done an automobile job this big before... however I am very mechanically inclined, and I'm great with my hands... I used to be a "coil mechanic" (I built metal melting coils/furnaces used in foundries).

I live in 08077 (It's like smack in the center of the PA,NJ,DE,NY... right outside Philly) anyone wanna help with this? I could definitely use the help of an experienced person on this one. You will have access to beer, a warm place to sleep if you so choose (it'll probably take us a weekend, right?), and I can probably squeeze you a home-cooked meal or two out of the deal (my mom is a spectacular cook). I'd also be willing to give you gas money and/or toll money. Any takers?

I'm down for helping, depending on when your gonna do it. If its still during school, I'm not more than an hour away from you prolly.

A 3/8" torque wrench will def come in handy, mainly cuz its not 3' long
Other than that, just a good selection of ratchets, deep and shallow sockets, screwdrivers, breaker bars, hammer/rubber mallet, maybe a prybar, jack stands (that goes without saying, ehem JESSE!!! ) and you could use a floor jack for a tranny. Or just 2 sets of hands.

I think you and I (or any 2 mechanically-inclined peeps) could knock it out in a day. Lets say a weekend to account for the unexpected.

Dude that would be incredible. I will let you know when within the next couple of days... probably next weekend or the weekend after (whatever would work best for you really), hopefully it'll start warmin' up soon. Maybe we can get D involved too, I know he's always lookin to work on more ludes and piss off the wifey =P.

PM me for further details bro... we'll exchange phone numbers and whatnot too. Also... what kind of beer you like?

My fellow Italian... comin through in a big way lol.

Edit: Just checked google maps. From the Deans Office at TCNJ to my front door (via 295 mostly) is a 48 minute drive (38 miles... 24.7 of which are on 295)

A lil' somethin like "mohn - a - 'gut" (It's hard to write it out.. but you get the gist)

People look at me like I'm crazy when I say Manicotti, Escarol (shkuh-doll), and my personal favorite Capicola (gobb-a-gaul [or gobb-a-gool depending on who's sayin it])

Oooh.. it's also fun to tell people I put gravy on my pasta... that normally elicits a few stares.

i just did my clutch not to long ago bro.

Most Items you will need:

-Help from a friend
-Beer. lots.
-The Helms Manual is GOLD. It is perfect. I used it every step.
-good socket set with lots of adapters for your ratchets
-Reliable philips head
-a long, 1/2" breaker bar (especially if you are pulling the flywheel)
-a good torque wrench. I bit the bullet and picked up an $80 Craftsman from Sears. Well worth it.
-a hydraulic lift will make your life SO MUCH easier. the tranny doesn't just fall out...it will take 2 people to remove it. <--PITA. for real.
-see if you can rent the tranny jack. the transmission gets heavy REAL QUICK when your trying to shake it out and put it back in.
-impact wrench or something powered as your hands will cramp tremendously!!
-clutch alignment tool (hopefully it came with the clutch)
-multi-purpose grease
-Super High-Temp UREA Grease (part no. 08798-9002 from Honda dealer..about $30 for a tiny container)
-2 quarts of HONDA GRADE tranny fluid. (get this when you get the UREA grease)
-WD-40 for exhaust bolts and other straglers
-Funnel with hose attached for transmission fluid.
-plastic bags to keep your bolts organized. TRUST ME. JUST DO THIS.
-Wire or hanger for the slave cylinder

Here is the link I posted afterward my install:
New Stage 2 Clutch/ LW Flywheel (Pics)

Words of advice. This takes a long time even with all the right tools. try to keep everything organized b/c you will be pulling around 150 bolts or so. I didnt actually count but it was a $hitload. You have to dump the tranny fluid too. don't avoid this b/c it would most likely add extra weight and spill everywhere when you pull the axle. You will have to disassemble some parts of the passenger side suspension also. I didn't remove the axle on the rotor/brake side and i had to keep moving the axle out of the way while i was working...it got annoying so you may want to just pull the axle nut when your taking off the wheels just for convenience.
When you disassemble the tranny mount, do exactly what the manual says b/c i thought i could cut some corners. nope. you have to take that whole thing apart otherwise the tranny will not come out at all. and you will risk scratching the paint in your engine bay during removal.
If you are removing/changing the flywheel (recommended), you will have to put a 1/2" ratchet on the crankshaft on the other side of the engine to keep the flywheel from spinning during removal. The bolts holding the flywheel are 12 point sockets only. (I think 14 mm?) There are 8 of them and they are snugged to a rusty 76 lbs of torque. hence the breaker bar. lastly, don't forget to ground the starter when you reinstall everything. that is the last thing i didnt do and i was furious when my car wouldn't turnver after like 12 hours of work. the ground wire is kind of hidden on the bottom side of the starter.
I know there is more i could tell you but that is all i can think of now. you should have no problems if you are mechanically inclined, it just takes a while. good luck!

Lol looks like we got our work cut out for us... should be fun! I don't have access to a lift, so that ****er is goin up as high as it can on jack stands lol.... I also don't have access to a compressor at my grandfather's house... maybe I can borrow one of those cordless electric impact wrenches... the sprinklerfitters where I work have some really good ones... 24v I believe, that should help.

As far as the transmission jack goes... I ain't spendin 100+ on that lol.. I'll just get one of those adaptors that you throw on your floor jack (I think I can get it for like 40 bucks or somethin)

Oh.. and I got myself a new fidanza 8lb flywheel, and a new honda oem rear main seal while we're in there I figure we might as well get that too since I'm almost positive I'm leaking oil from there. And yeah my clutch came with an alignment tool.

And Neck... I just LOL'd at the PAX version of the Sopranos.

Lol I sometimes wish I went into UTI... I think cars are the only thing I truly love lol. I wish I would have known that about 6 years ago.

BTW... thanks again man... my mom already gave us a green light on the manicotti =) (good choice by the way... my favs are manicotti/ravioli/stuffed shells and my absolute fav is gnocchis)

Also... like I said... you let me know when you are available... we'll go by your schedule since you are helpin me out.

OOH I almost forgot... I have an SH so we'll be removing the ATTS along the way (completely outlined in the Helms manual). You should try to bring a camera if you can we can do a how-to/write up on it since PP has one and we don't... plus to the best of my knowledge, I haven't seen any write-ups anywhere that include ATTS removal

what area are yall from? This is a long shot too but if you have access to a military base through a friend or something, most bases have an autoshop that you can use. They have lots of tools you need and it is only like $4/hour to use everything. Thats how i got access to the lift and tranny jack.

as far as the jack goes..it should be interesting to see how you actually get the transmission out from under the car...maybe an SUV jack? I got the same flywheel as you did too. love it.

Yeah it's basically a Mechanic training school, but they take the best people in the classes and train them to become exotic car (mostly Porsche I believe) technicians. Also... I have a friend that went there and he got a job with Lexus and an internship at Lockheed Martin as an aircraft technician.

We're from Jersey... Nick's from up north, and I'm from central Jersey. I do live FAIRLY close to Maguire's AFB, but I don't have any military friends that could get me on base.

I live about 30 miles away from McGuire's... but like I said, I don't have any access... Also, the car needs to be towed to wherever it's going (the clutch is completely destroyed) and I don't know how much it would cost to go that far.

oh damm. I am in nw FL. I make frequent trips to NC near Pope AFB and Seymour Johnson AFB. I guess that won't work to well! ATTS will be a factor but i didnt have to worry about that. I think it is only 1 or 2 extra steps to remove the unit.

Best thing you can do is take pictures, having something to look at while your putting it all back together will save you time. Oh and when you have trouble lining something back up......walk away and come back later 9/10 times it will slide right in after a beer.

Those are the best 2 tips i have gotten so far as an apprentice.

Well, if experience has taught me anything... it's taught me that the amount of beer that is consumed is directly proportionate to the ease of things sliding right in......

At least that's what experience has taught me about dating.

Dude that would be incredible... do you have a transmission jack or just a floor jack? I only have access to a hydraulic floor jack. We just gotta wait for whenever it's good for everybody and we can get together and do it at my pop's garage... I'm sure he'd be interested in helping too lol (he's the one I'm "financing" my lude through... he test drove one [not the one I ended up getting] and loved it so he agreed to help me get one).
