Valve cover removal help thread



look at that horrific valve cover :shakeshead:
i bought the necessary chemicals and such, i need help now,

i know i need to remove the obvious,
  • oil cap
  • PCV
  • sparkplug cover
  • spark plug wires
  • spark plus
wait, aren't the plugs in the head, therefor i don't have to remove them?

but how do i get this guy off....[circled in red]

and yes, you are correct, you dont need to take the spark PLUGS out, only the plug wires.


follow that electrical harness down to the alternator. one plug that is covered by a rubber boot is simply a green connector that you unplug from the alternator. the other is also covered by a rubber boot, and is a 10mm nut (i think its a ground, maybe ) and you unscrew the nut, then you can pull the entire harness over the valve cover, so you can take the VC off.


btw, your VC looks like its in pretty damn good shape, especially after 202K miles. mine didnt even look that good after 120K

thanks for the help nick,
yeah it doesnt look bad
but notice how i pulled a with a can on black paint,
i sanded down the letters and remembered how sexy it looked stock,
i used really fine paper and they came out really shiny and i missed it dearly,
got the aircraft grade paint stripper and ill be doing this tomorrow.
hope to get everythingup to primer done tomorrow

i splurged a little, i actually went with duplicolor this time and got like 1200 degree primer?
i think the stripper and primer together wereliek 30 bucks,
i always feel horrible when i cheap out on the prelude
therefor! i went with the good stuff.

i havent decided yet, i kinda hate it hwo everyone does red, it just kinda makes you look like everyone else,
i dont have the patients to sit around and polish it so itll probably be black again, just a much nicer paintjob than my OEM black flaking ****ed up by a 15 yr. old kid paintjob its got now lol

Illinois, its alot of saw dust and other dut, ive had it under a car cover and our air compressor kiks up alot of dust, as you know, at a constructiuon site theres always dust, well the house is done but yeah, the compressor kicks it all up.

Ahh, construction sawdust, that explains it, thanks. That is why it looks so fine. I've been a lot of places but I couldn't comprehend that much silty looking dirt that quickly.
Can't wait to see the top coat to see what color you decide on.

the i have to do the hood trunk and roof after this,
for those people who want to do this,
dont unless your really good with paint,

it was so fkning annoying to strip it, then find that theyre not made smooth as a baby's butt and you have to fix it. then once thats done you prime it and the first coat comes out ****ty because you missed so many rough spots, THEN you spray the second coat and it looks decent, im waiting for that baby to be DRYYYY before i even dare spray it, its been like 2 days of drying because im scared to **** it up and have to start ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL over.

send it over or just go the easy route and buy one pre painted.
Just my 2 cents.

Oh yeah, not to metion, its kinda a bitch to get off cause of that harness

one more thing, you DONT need to buy a new valve cover gasket it you take extra care not to rip it, mine has 200k on the engine and it was fine then yours should be too.

Dude I know this is kinda late, but one really easy way of getting the letters to be a different color than the rest is this: once everythings clean, make the letters look how you want first (sanded, painted, whatever) then once those are done, cover just the letters (and whatever else you want different) with vasoline or chapstick. Then paint as usual. Nothing should stick to the letters then, and clean up when your done. Voila! I've never tried this before, but I've read on other sites that it works, so do it at your own risk ;)

dude much easier,
spray everything,
get everything perfect,
once the paint has had a good amount of time to dry and cure,
sand the letters with really rough sand paper,
then use a fine grit to remove the rough marks,
they will be shiny, sorta like a polish,

good to go, much much much easier,
vasoline + valve cover = total mess FTL

i take back what i said, wrinkle paint is sooooooooooooooooooooooo easy to work with and the results are GREAT! the VC was only half done drying and wrinkling so i didnt take pictures, i have another day off of school tomorrow so i think ill gonna go touch up whatever has to be done and slap her back on, this is a great mad or whatever you wanna call it and i did it for under like 30 bucks i think. Paint stripper is a must though.
