deciding on what model

I'm planning on getting a prelude this summer and have been doing research on them to determan what i want. I really like the style of the 4thgens , but the 5th gens are slowly becoming very appealing. My main focus and concern is the motor. I want something with a bit of balls, but not a gas hog.
I've been looking at the engine options and was leaning toward the Si ,but i feel i will regret not getting a vtech because of the exctra power. So here lies my question for those that own eather of the two. Weather it's a 5th or 4thgen....
What type of gas mileage do you get. The vtechs have a 10:0.1 c.r so i'm assuming they need at least 91-93 octane and will not run good on unleaded. That means higher prices at the pump. If i did get the Si, is it hard and even worth it to get into the 190hp range. I'd apreciate any thoughts or comments on this subject. Thanks!

the body style basically comes down to personal preferance. do YOU like the style of the 4th's or 5ths better??

LETS NOT GET INTO 4TH IS BETTER THAN 5TH, OR VICE VERSA!!

the 4th gens came with three engines:
the F22 in the S model; 135hp, i forget the torque.
the H23 in the SI or SE; 160hp 158lb-ft
or the H22 in the Vtec; 190hp 158lb-ft,

and the 5th gens ONLY came with H22's (in the states at least).
i ONLY put premium in my H23, cuz i put nothing but the best in my baby, and it says on the dash too and i get around 24-25mpg usually

Spunky and gas mlieage sound slike you need an H23 4th gen. Mine could get 300 to a tank (15.9 gallons). My H22 is struggling to get 220. It's running really rich but even before that problem, the best I ever got was 280 and that was an entire trip riding down the interstate and running on dreams when I got to a gas station.

I got the H22A1, and I get 23 or so around city, and thats because I cant keep myself out of vtec.. I love it too much, gotta hit it every once in a while. On the highway I get around 28 mpg. Only put 93 octane shell V power in her, which yea costs more at the pump but realistically its not that much more. Premium is usually around 10 cents higher per gallon.. so if I got 12 gallons I spent $1.20 more than I would've at a lower level. I fill up about once a week, and around half a tank so 6-7 gallons.. 60-70 cents more, thats like what 2-3 bucks a month extra?

im not sure exactly how much gas mileage i get but i know its not good! if you're worried about gas mileage but still want some power i would get the 4th gen w/ H23.

Apparently a lot of people only put Shell in their Ludes. I thought I was the only one. I'll put Chevron if I have nothing else but that's the 2 I'm committed to. They just put certain detergents in than most other companies don't so I'm willing to pay an extra penny per gallon over the other guys.

Dude, haven't you heard? Adding an H to VTEC(H) adds 15 hp.

P.S. I average about 30 mpg, unless I VTEC(H) it a bunch.

i dont think there is a huge difference in mileage when it comes to 4th and 5th gens in the vtec models..it also depends on what mods you are planning and if you are going to keep ur car tuned up correctly..some may argue that they get 22mpg and some may say they get 30mpg..always depends on the car and the driver

If you are a fast driver and addicted to keeping your foot to the floor (like me) to listen to that orgasmic engine sound of vtec then expect to go through a lot more fuel than most.

Mods will make a huge difference on your car although some will give you better fuel consumption while others will make your car drink like a fish.

Keeping your car tuned is of utmost importance, if your car is running too rich you will go through a full tank of fuel as if theres no tomorrow but will make your car run a little faster than normal while running lean will give you better fuel consumption but will decrease the life of your engine either way you will have to find a balance between the two..

then there comes the question of body kits and body style..some will argue that the 4th looks better than the fifth and vice verse (although i prefer the fifth).

anyway the main point is the 4th is an older car and therefore chances of finding a 4th with low mileage with a clean interior and body is more difficult and the fifth is a newer car with an updated body style.. all depends on personal choice.

one other note...the quoted mpg figures from the manufacturers is very realistic and if i can remember correctly it was around the 22mpg figure for combined so dont expect much more than that

In the summer i get 26-28 MPG, but in the winter because of my car over cools (Never gets above one bar while moving & theromo is good) it gets about 24 MPG.
The H23 is a strong engine. Lots of mid range torque.
The H22 is Vary Strong, and lots of High end power.
A 4th gen in good condition is harder to find than a 5th.
It is all about personal preference.

Balls > gas milage. These are hondas, they get good gas milage period. I'd personally go for a 4th gen VTEC.

Honda I would have to say have excellent gas milage.

People who love VTEC don't get good gas milage ;-)

22-26mpg is about what i get now so that's fine. I was just curiouse as to the diferance in mpg between the vtec and si engine. It sounds like they're pretty close to each other. As far as mods, i want to keep this somewhat economical, so probably the exhaust and intake would be changed. Also a header would be added. Again thanks for all the replies!!!!!!!!

go look at both generations and see which appeals to you better. personally, i got a 4th gen cause it was less expensive and i like how wide the rear looks.

my 4th gen has over 270k miles and still does pretty good.

I say get a 5th gen, but that is my personal preference. I get about 25 city and about 30 highway. Usually around 330 to the tank.
