Prelude85's New Love: The Ghia

Alright, my pops picked up his old dream car, the Volkswagon Karmann Ghia.

These cars are getting rarer and more expensive so my dad jumped on this for about 14 hundred. Straight body no bondo work, and virtually rust free. This car is about 33 years old so there are some small rust spots but no real cancer woes. She runs well too, took it from San Jose to Fresno over some mountains, about a 2 and a half hour drive. Needs the basic tune-ups oil, spark plugs, fuel filter.

I LOVE this car I really don't know why. It needs a lot of work, it's a project but a fun project indeed. Also a good way to take my mind off my recent loss.

Here are some photos Enjoy!

The seats look brutal in those photos, holy crap!! My pops did a good scrubbing and they're looking much better. We got the gauge cluster to light up now too. Oil change and spark plugs are going in tomorrow bought today just too late to do anything bout it.

We took a lot more photos today so I'll get them uploaded tomorrow. It's a lot of fun to take photos of such a unique looking vehicle!! Look for em tomorrow. =)

Thomas, don't worry bout askin bout chit. haha I lost my best friend, other half, and the love of my life. My girl left me so I've been in a real bumed out mood lately, pretty severe at some points to be honest. =/ Like I said this car is giving me something else to think about and seems to be bringing my family closer so it's been pretty good in numerous ways.

Anyways, we look to re carpet that mess and do something about the seats in general. Blinkers aren't working and neither are the reverse lights. Goin old school on people bustin' out with the hand signals while making turns. haha Umm. . .major cleaning in general as you can see there's a lot of mess everywhere. I wanna take the seats out and spray that sucker with a hose!!

Ah and we gotta fix the door locks and trunk lid for the engine.

So ya a lot of work. Car is so simple should be easy to do it all.

I love those cars...My brother almost got one when he was 16, but opted for a '69 Beetle.

And is that a tow hitch I spy with my little eye? What were the people at Vdub thinking putting a tow hitch on a car with ~ 60hp? Or is that one of those rare Ghias with the 5.7 V8 HAH

Wow. Excellent find. Reminds me of my 1st ride. I snagged a 72' Ghia back in 87' for 500 clams. Ended up putting almost 3k into the restoration. The car ended up being one of the most beautiful rides around. Was one of the saddest days when I sold it for 2500.

My dad knows a guy who had one and dropped a Porche motor in it..I forget what motor he used though...it was the turbo one from the old 911 (I think it was the 911), the one with the whale tail.

Thanks for the compliments guys. Ya you can do some crazy stuff with em. I,ve seen vette engines in em as well as porche. The cool thing is that the car is so old it doesn't need to go through smog or inspection. Basically free to do as we please. Haha

We got that brutal tow hitch off changed the oil and got the plugs changed. Probably the nastiest gunk build up I've ever seen!! She runs much better and you can hear that weird jingle that volkswagons are known for. Still loud as hell though. Haha

I fixed the door lock as well.

The blinkers are still a puzzle...must be the flasher relay or something. Bulbs are good the contact points have been cleaned. Has to be it.

Photos will be uploaded when I get home.

Okay we fixed up teh car quite a bit cosmetically. Got a cheap lil radio in with a little box for speakers thrown in the back. Blinkers work now apparently. I gotta see that. I'll get some photos taken tomorrow, she's lookin hot now. haha

That's awesome!! I bet that's the one with the smaller brake and turn signals. i love those even more. This one is allegedly a 72. It's still classy lookin.

It's really nice to see so many positive comments about a non-Honda hell even non-Japanese car on here. Good to see a lot of open mindedness, and to a cat like me who hasn't even been round much till lately. You guys are awesome. Except Daryl, he's a looser cause he can't respect a classic. haha Just kiddin' man you're entitled to your opinion.
