F20b or dan benson build?

Hey what's up, I'm a new member, been coming to this site for a while and others looking at different information and I need some guidance about what I should do regarding my poor '97 base and it's overheated motor. In Dec 2014, I blew the headgasket in my lude and it wasn't as simple as just that. I was trying to get it home, it had been running hot for the last 20-25 miles, and about a mile from home, the car started filling up with white smoke. I dropped the windows and looked in the rearview and smoke was just pouring out of the exhaust, like bad, and immediately the car didn't want to go (duh), but I figured the damage was done, like a warped head or worse and got it home. Sat in it for a sec, and tried to restart it to see how it would sound and feel, and nothing. It was completely dead. No power at all, when I turned the key, nothing happened at all. So the car has sat for almost 3 years, but I have plans to make it better than before, I'm just unsure of if I want to get a jdm F20b and lsd trans or send the block to dan benson for a build. I've looked at hmotorsonline and jdmracingmotors, the latter having compression test videos of the engine being sold. Dan quoted me a very fair price (I feel), however when I spoke with him I talked to him about a rebuild, but didn't think about everything that would have to be done, all new gaskets, bearings, and other stuff in the top and bottom. I have about 3500 to work with right now, and yeah, that's about it. Thanks in advance, sorry about the novel lol.

if you buy another engine it would be wise to rebuild it too if you want it to last

Re: F20b or dan benson build?

i hear you, i figured i could run a little boost, about 300whp or so on the f20b, without having to tear into it, the thing is I will need the whole engine(h22) gone through, top and bottom and I'm sure that for the price I was quoted for the h22 sleeve/con. rod/piston upgrade, that's not included. like for example I want to have the whole motor rebuilt, head disassembled, seals/gaskets replaced, etc. With 245k miles on it, it needs it. Dan Benson recommended one of the build packages on his website, I think it was the #2 special or something. The price seemed pretty reasonable, $2850 and that includes sleeving, rods, pistons, bearings(I think) and such. Oh, and decking the block.

Re: F20b or dan benson build?

3500 is not enough for boosting, OEM rebuild yes but not for upgrading anything

you nees seals & gaskets, clutch kit, timing stuff etc + if you upgrade anything: engine management + of course rebuild your head

I would just get a low mile H23A vtec from H motors and call it a day.

Re: F20b or dan benson build?

I know $3500 isn't enough to boost, I just want to do things right the first time. I'll have about 6k in another month or two, and would like to have a strong, redone engine for boost a little down the road, or take that $ and boost an f20b, since I've heard many good things about them. But this is my first time doing all this, that's why I'm not attempting to do it myself. And an h23? I haven't heard a lot about em, and when I go turbo, it's still got frm sleeves, which I've always heard complicate things regarding f.i. I don't know guys, I just feel like this should be attainable without huge cost, I've always heard how hondas can make power so cheaply, kinda wondering if that's really the case...

making power always cost you - specially when you have non turbo Honda - theres no short cuts
