Should I Be Suspicious? Or Not?

Last week, I stopped by my local grocery store on the way home and was greeted by a guy in a mechanic work shirt on my way into the store. The guy was an older gentleman and seemed friendly. He complimented me on my car, asked the year and the usual gearhead questions. Said that he admires Honda's and especially the older Preludes. I said thank you and went into the store to do my shopping.

About half way through, he found me and said that I should bring the car by his shop for a free alignment and to let the other guys take a look, cause they are Honda fanatics as well. (I believed that he offered the alignment because I bentioned that I had replaced the rear suspension parts and would be doing the front in a couple weeks). He had a legitamate business card with his name and the shop info on it and on the back, he wrote "Free Alignment" and put his cell on there.

My concern is that I believe that NOTHING is free. I am pretty sure that this is a ploy to get my car there so that they can point out things on a 26 year old car that "needs replacing"... The thing is, I will be replacing EVERYTHING on my front suspension, as I did with the back and there will be nothing that needs fixing.

I have heard of shops offering a "Free Visual Inspection" , get the car up on the rack, and then pretty much extort the individual to pay for them to let the car down. I have also heard of them breaking things to make more work.

And as a side note, almost 2 years ago, I took my Suburban in to have my transmission rebuilt and the shop I took it to said it was going to cost $800 plus tax and they offered "Free Tow" and a "Free Diagnosis". Once they had the transmission out and apart... The transmission rebuild was going to be $2100!! I told them that I would come tow the truck to my house and do it myself to which they replied, I owed them $800!! I asked for what and they said the tow, removal, disassembly and diagnosis... Cause all that was only "free" if I had them do the work... Long story short, I managed to come up with the money the day before they put a lien on my Burb and I got it back.
(And it STILL has transmission problems)

ANYWAYS... Because of these instances, and even before them, I have always refused to let a shop work on my car, unless it was something that I could absolutely NOT do myself.

My cars are like my woman... NO ONE touches her except a Dr.!!

Back to this Alignment Shop... I looked them up, found 7 Reviews on Google+, one of which someone said that the "Old Man" broke something on their car that wasn't broken before, just so he could charge more. All the others seemed fine, but kinda generic, like the employees wrote them themselves!

Here's the link to that Review:

Euro Wheel Alignment Review on Google+

And this is the link to the Google Search on some other reviews for this Place:

Euro Wheel Alignment Reviews

If any of you wouldn't mind taking a look at the review or just throwing in your $0.02 based on my rantings, I'd greatly appreciate your opinions.

I sure could use a "Free" alignment, but not at the cost of them breaking something on purpose, or even worse, trying to scam me out of my car with a mechanics lien or something...

Thank you ALL!

If it looks too good to be true, it's probably not true. Besides, if you already have plans to do what you think needs doing, do you need his free alignment?

If you're really curious, and just want to see if there's a bunch of like-minded Prelude geeks at this place, go over and meet them...but don't give up your keys, or let them start fiddling with your car. Usually 15 minutes of friendly chit-chat will give you an impression.

Oh, I will definitely be replacing all the parts myself, but I am unable to align everything because I don't have an alignment machine. I usually use a digital level to get the camber set and the string / measuring tape method to get the tow set so I can get to the Firestone down the street without being off a whole bunch. But to get everything "true", it needs to be put on a machine. 4 Wheel alignments are usually $100, which I have, but if I had an opportunity to take advantage of a free alignment, who wouldn't want to save that $100?

Re: Should I Be Suspicious? Or Not?

I would go in with the expectation of getting a free alignment, but also give them $50 to do something else you don't feel like doing like an A/C recharge, or whatever kind of maintenance falls in the $50 range. You know, make it worth their while and support them a little bit. That way, you get a 2 for one kind of thing and have an excuse to turn down other work, and at the same time show them the courtesy of giving them a little business.
Plus, if you're worried about them breaking something, I'm sure they would have no problem with you being out around the bay observing and chatting a bit.

I wouldnt trust "free" mechanic work, if you have done everything yourself, no need to stop now.

Yeah, I know that shops offer those "coupons" for discount oil changes, and other services like that to drum up business. But to offer a free alignment, after I told him that I have done "everything" to my car already doesn't make a lot of sense.

I'll do all the mechanic work myself, but I just don't have the means to properly align my car myself... So I'll have to take it to a shop and pay the $100 or so for an alignment. I usually use the Firestone near my house cause I KNOW there is a 1-800 # to call and complain to if there is an issue.

The more I talk this out, the more I am convincing myself that there's something up and it's not worth chancing it... Just me passing up a "free" $100 is the hard part about it.

f@#k google reviews man! (Just woke, no coffee yet)
Seriously though...Only people who post on those are 'plants' and the something for nothing crowd who complain because he the free mcnuggets were cold.

I agree with Lindso, put a couple $20's in the guys pocket for some work like a tire rotation. Easy work for them, and you'll soon know deal or no deal.

I was wondering when you were going to chime in!

So Byk, do you think that he sounds like a nice guy, possibly a genuine "Honda Fan" and trying to bring in some new customers? What could be a downfall about getting a "free" alignment?

Just so hard to trust people these days. I want to... Just had a couple bad experiences with shops ripping me off, or trying to.

Re: Should I Be Suspicious? Or Not?

I figured Jamie and Lindso had said it all. lol. But let my alligator mouth over ride my canary brain before I'd had any coffee...

Trust your gut.

Sounds like your gut says avoid the place.

Me personally, if I need to be concerned about price the car sits until I don't...

I'd be more worried about a buncha strangers see-ing the car and later stealing it....

Re: Should I Be Suspicious? Or Not?

Awesome, Thanks for your input. Yeah, think I'm going to have to pass on this offer. The "Bargain Hunter" in me is says to go for it, but my "Gut Feeling" is saying BEWARE...

He just seemed a little too eager, too nice or something. Just wish I could find a trustworthy mechanic... Cause I'm not above asking for help when I have exhausted all my knowledge, my dad's experience as a former auto mechanic, my fellow gearhead friends, and last but DEFINITELY not least... you guys on here. Especially for those Lude specific issues.

For my alignments, I usually take my cars to either of the 2 Firestones down the street and get the Lifetime Alignment cause how the roads are here in Houston, you are GOING to hit a pothole... Or road debris... And will need a realignment from time to time and since I am the type that keeps my cars "forever", it's worth if for me to pay that extra $59 or whatever the difference is between the LLT and the 1Yr/1 time.

Re: Should I Be Suspicious? Or Not?

Exactly!!...

Several years ago I wandered aimlessly shop to shop at inspection time. Find a decent one and bam, he's outta business...so basically I just asked friends and coworkers. Enough folks said "Jimmy" (the inventor guy) and Wayne (the inpector guy)..

But like Jamie said, pop in there (w/o the Lude), shoot the breeze some and go from there.
