Prelude13's E21 progress thread

So i picked up a 1979 BMW e21 320i with the original M10 motor in it. This is going to be my progress thread.

We went to take a look at it yesterday, we being Chris(Sideswipe Si) and I. We have plans to turn this classic car into a track monster. Some quick facts: 1) this car is RWD. 2)It weighs around 2600lbs. 3)Can anyone say, "M POWER?" :silly:

Here are some pics:

This car paved the way for the 3 series platform. I'm thinking about custom plates as being 28 years old, it qualifies for NYS historical/classic tags...we'll see.

Update 3/2008 - I ditched this project due to having too many other projects :(

Yes, I'm leaving that up to Chris(Sideswipe Si). He's more of an expert on that. I've been reading up on bimmerforums.com and man, you just dont know Neck!

Yup, that department im gonna take care of. We have big plans for this little classic car...
-for the moment, we're still researching on which motor to transplant...we're also thinking about turbo-charging and perhaps a little laughing gas to add...i have dreams of making this thing scoot to the 12 second range or less after my unsuccessful run with the Prelude at an unfavorable quarter mile time...

what are your plans for it? I was planning on working on my 325, but body work wise it's horrible, parts of the trunk and rear fender have cancer all over it, and since I'm in Germany they use euro instead of the dollar and right the euro rate is ridiculous, they wanted 2000 euro which is the equivalent to $3000, which I don't think is worth it, considering I only paid $400 for the car. Only thing I have done is a short ram intake, need to get an airbox for it cuz right now its just suckin up hot air, gotta love that, but its cold so its not to bad right now:)

It sports the M10, 2 liter motor at the moment...thank GOD the Germans used timing chains... Your e30 is super sweet man! a Great Britain spec car in der Vaterland huh?

Well, this is going to be a 2 man project. Im focused on power and Chris is focused on handling. He's going to autocross this car while i try to break 12's. It's also going to be a show car once we agree on what engine, suspension to use. I agree, the easiest swap will be from the e30's - the 318i/325i/335i motors. We've seen so many combos so far, the one i like the best is the M5, 3.6L swap that a few people have done. Of course, that will cost us a lot more $ than the e30 motors I'm also not ruling out any ALPINA swaps...thank GOD i took 1 semester of German. It'll help me get around when and if i do decide to call our Teutonic tuners in Europe

Right now, we're taking a down time because of the winter weather. We're taking the winter to research as much as we can and find & talk to some Euro tuners who know about these cars. Strangely, i've been noticing a lot more Euro tuners now that i've actually been looking for them...ranging from V-Duber's to BMW fanatics...

Painting the car will be last of course. We like the original blue color paint, but we MUST patch up the outside rust as you guys can see. The interior is pretty much mint...other than the worn front seats(which will be replaced with 3rd gen Prelude seats), everything else is just fine. The doors close with a nice thump...everything is surprisingly in tact and not that worn for such an old car. For you closed minded Honda-heads, dont ever, ever sleep on German engineering.

more to come soon!

sounds like you know what you want, which is a good thing, if you need anything let me know, since I'm here in deutcheland so I might be able to get you some stuff cheaper being over here. Like I said though check out that website http://www.kormanautoworks.com They have some pretty good things on there, not to mention engine swaps set up to your needs. I'll submit some pics later of my M20 engine (I-6). Well let me know if you need anything

"hotrod ^^^ you're in germany?!? any chance you can swipe me an oem e46 m3 csl diffuser?"

I'll look around and see what I can dig up for ya.

P.S. DON'T EVER SLEEP ON GERMAN ENGINEERING

ever seen a VW Bug rape a Ferrari F40? I have only in germany...it was INSANE!

You're looking for the rear bumper diffuser right? Just wanna make sure so I know exactly what I'm looking for. If it is, I'll go straight to BMW and see if I can find out how much they want for a factory diffuser, what year is your M3 so I can ask BMW.

I did some research, check out this forum for some engine swap ideas if you don't already know what you wanna swap into it http://forums.mwerks.com/zerothread?id=1971411

also, there's some sites that deal with taking out the M10 and replacing it with a CA18DE(T) engine

here's another one too
