Custom Electronic Mods or Creature Comforts

I have been pondering making some Custom "Creature Comforts" for my 3rd Gen Prelude (and my other 2 WIPs as well) and I was wondering what Custom Items or Modifications you Guys and Gals have made or implemented into your various rides.

Some of the things I want to do are:
  • Upgrade My Roof Light to LED
  • Make my power antenna adjustable height. (Up, Down, or anywhere between)
  • Be able to "Wink" one of my Headlights by it flipping up and turning on, then flipping down and turning off
  • Make my fog lights useable without having to open or turn on my headlights
  • Make my High beams AND Low beams come on when I turn on the high beams. (I did this on one of my other cars in about 20 minutes)
  • Use an Android Device for my Audio and Navigaton System

I also built a custom hidden mount in my 78 Skylark for my XM Radio. I hid it behind the ashtray door and it was motorized so that when you turned on the radio, it energized a motor that lowered the door, and when you turned the radio off, or turned the car off, the door raised back up to hide the radio. I removed it before I sold the car because I plan to use it in my 70 GSX Clone once I get it up and runing. ANYWAYS...

Those are my ideas and I'm sure I'll think of others as time goes on and I get those done. I have seen several How-To's on here and plan to use them as guides.

Now, it's your turn... I'm kinda anxious to see what cool ideas you have!

Re: Custom Electronic Mods or Creature Comforts

I was going to do a map light from an 07 TL car. Fits perfect where the screw cover area of the rear view mirror is. But I sold the car. That and some door lamps like the SH. All controlable by the dome light switch.

^^ the lamp.
My twins thread talked about it and there were some pix showing how it would work.

Non electrical stuff: I did a clock cover fix how to, an auto dipstick mod where you can reach it without removing stuff first and my favorite was the Accord arm rest to Prelude elbow rest that didn't interfere with shifting.

^^elbow rest/99¢ cup holders

^^ elbow rest

^^ clock cover fix with hobby drill and sewing pin

^^ tranny dip stick mod.

The red 91 car was my mod it car. I kinda miss it, but some other youngster has been taking real good care of it and enjoying it each day from what I hear. It sat in my driveway a lot. So I'm glad for both he and the car things ended up like they did.

^^ elbow rest (I REALLY like that idea)

Thanks for sharing your Mods with me and everyone else. Those are all some good Mods & Fixes. I REALLY like the Armrest Mod. I find myself searching for a place to put my arm when i'm not shifting. I have been looking for the clock button cover, and now realize that the clock is kinda useless to me as I have a clock on my radio and I always have my cell with me. I think I am going to put a power outlet there so I can plug in my radar detector. I'll just shorten the cord so I have a little slack and not 4 ft of bundles power cord.

I like the 4 separate lights on the map light, it would be handy for when you or your passenger needs to see something. I think I am going to get two festoon sockets and mount them side by side as I bought a multi pack of bluish-white festoon LEDs and I want to point one forward and one kinda towards the back. They are pretty bright so just One might do the trick, so I might put a switch on the second one so it will be off until I need it.

Re: Custom Electronic Mods or Creature Comforts

I forgot to add that I ended up mounting a cup holder on the passenger side of the center console. I slid the seat all the way up so it wouldn't get bumped if the seat was moved forward. I just drilled some pilot holes and used some black pan head machine screws to hold it on. I just need to put some washers between the console and the back of the holder to shim it out so my java cup sits level.

Re: Custom Electronic Mods or Creature Comforts

The elbow rest sits a smidgen further back than the "official" 3g prelude arm rest. It also sits a little lower.

how to 88accord arm rest in 3g prelude
^^ the how to I did up a while ago

Re: Custom Electronic Mods or Creature Comforts

In response to your map light I've been meaning to put pics of the ADJUSTIBLE map light that came in my donor 3G carby manual , the light was a part of the reversing mirror and was circular and would swivel around in a direction that points towards your crotch (where your map would normally go whilst reading, I'll be sure to post pics soon!
Another idea would be the convert your dash lights to LEDS, it's easy and instantly gratifying when done
Have you thought about a car phone kit/hands free?
One day my lude will be so full of gadgetry it'll even make honda say "whaaaaaaat"

Re: Custom Electronic Mods or Creature Comforts

Here in the states we have a parts store called pep boys. They sell single size adjustable cup holders for like $3 eac. You can either fasten them with supplied double side tape or add screws to hold them down.
They fit perfectly between the e-brake and the seat.

^^ If interested try 'gogearmobile.com'

Next time at the junkyard, see if there are any late 90's accords with a radio pocket. It's just like the 3g but has a bottom. Should work. If not here's a how to...
how to: install accord radio pocket to 5th gen prelude

^^ looks just like the 3g pocket.

I had thought about mounting my radar detector from the rear view area as there is both a solid mounting surface and power located there.

As for the LEDs in the instrument cluster, I forgot to add that to my list... AND forgot to swap some in when I had the cluster out to fix the Speedo & Tach. I have a set that I removed from my Skylark before I sold it. They sell them pretty cheap on e-Bay if you don't mind waiting a couple weeks to get them. The ones I have are the 194 size and most of themhad a small problem of the diode and/or the resistor inside the assy coming unsoldered from the LED. I just popped them apart and soldered them the RIGHT way and no problems since then.

The car came with a CHEAP 90's era JVC CD Player... I mean, it plays CDs... That's it... No BlueTooth, No MP3, no track info... I have a Pioneer Premier on the shelf in the garage that at least has an AUX in, MP3 capeable, but not Bluetooth that I may throw in for now. I am SERIOUSLY thinking about that Android tablet install for my Phone & Navigation and route the sound through an amp. I already upgraded all 4 speakers to Pioneer TS Series 6 3/4 4 ways. It sounds good, but just a pain to have to carry CDs in my car again.

AND... I feel the same way about Custom Mods. I like to make my cars "my own".

Speaking of which, I just remembered another MOD I want to do... "Courtesy Power & Lights". Pretty much, when you turn off the car, the radio and whatever else you put on the circuit, stays on until you open the door. I did this on my Skylark and it was realatively easy and cheap. I left that on the car so i'll have to get the parts to do it on this one. I'll do a "How-To" once I get to that project.

I made a list of To-Do's for my Prelude, especially for the things that should work but didn't. I am going to add the MODs to that list as well and mark them off as I complete them.

I like those cup holders! I might have to change mine out. We have Pep boys here in Houston as well, and they DO carry a lot of fodder like that. They also carry a LOT of aftermarket parts that the "Other 2 or 3" don't. Intake tubes, Poly suspension parts, aftermarket gauges, etc. But i'll save that for another thread.

I just may have to go visit Pep Boys to see what kind of goodies they have to offer!

Re: Custom Electronic Mods or Creature Comforts

I have quite a few nickel n dime tools from pep boys like finger ratchets, offset needle nose and other useful crap in my junkyard tool bag.

My son got his offset spacers hanging on a display there. I don't buy their parts etc, but did spend about $200 on Honda stickers there last year.lol.

I like your courtesy light stays on idea and may try that on my SH door lights. Ima also get around to installing a dome light over the back seat of that car like edm cars had. Any acura car in the junkyard has the exact same lamp. And our cars are wired for it already. Just gotta cut a hole and mount it.

I'm also contemplating a Bose amp from newer GM cars/trucks in my 97. To drive the front end of the afbs in association with the rear part of it.

Re: Custom Electronic Mods or Creature Comforts

Let's just call it a "Courtesy Power" circuit. I had my Car Stereo, XM Radio, Radar Detector, and the hidden door to my XM all on that circuit. (I used a 30 amp relay and fuse so that was the limit of my circuit.) The circuit basically is battery power, accessory power, a couple fuses and holders, a ground, a relay, some wire, and a spring loaded pin or slide switch. If you want, I can draw out the diagram on how to wire it... Unless you are like me and want to figure it out yourself.

Re: Custom Electronic Mods or Creature Comforts

Kool, I'll draw up a diagram tomorrow and post it here. I might have the parts to build a mock setup as well. I may as well put together a "How-To" and post that as well.

This is going to be fun!

Re: Custom Electronic Mods or Creature Comforts

Ok, I created a Wiring Diagram for the Courtesy Power Circuit. I actually went ahead and designed 2 circuits. One is designed to kill the Power when the key is turned off, and ONLY the Driver door is opened, and the second is designed so if EITHER door is opened, while the key is off.

Before I show the diagrams, I want to explain how this works:

The Battery Power comes from the Battery (Or any constant 12 Volt Source) through a Fuse, and to PIN 30 of the Relay. (YELLOW WIRES)

Accessory Power from your ignition switch or the Fuse Box is applied to PIN 85 of the relay when you turn the Key to Accessory. (RED WIRES)

When the key is turned on, the Relay is Energized and the power from PIN 30 is diverted from PIN 87a of the Relay to PIN 87 and on to the Accesories you have attached to the Terminal Block. (ORANGE WIRES)

PIN 86 of the Relay is the Relay Ground PIN. The Relay Circuit is completed through the Door Pin Switche(s) and to Chassis Ground. (GREEN WIRES)

The Power from PIN 87 is routed back and also applied to PIN 85 of the Relay. (PURPLE WIRE)

This PURPLE WIRE will continue to energize the Relay (Even if the Key is turned off and removed from the Ignition) until the Ground is broken by the Door Pin Switch losing contact due to the door opening. On the Driver & Passenger Circuit, the Door Pin Switches are in series, so if EITHER Door is opened, Ground is lost and the Relay is De-Energized.

Also, if for some reason 12v Battery Power is lost, the Relay will De-Energize as well.

As a note, Be sure to use Fuses that are properly rated for the circuit. The Accessory Fuse from the Ignition Switch or Fuse Panel (RED) only needs to be a 3A or 5A fuse as it doesn't take much to Energize the Relay.

However, The +12V Battery Power (YELLOW) needs to be able to handle the full Power of ALL of the accessories you connect to that circuit.

For Example: If your car Radio pulls 15A and your Radar Detector pulls 5A, you at LEAST need a 25A Fuse. A 20A might work, but may blow.

The Relay is rated at 30A, so the MAXIMUM Fuse rating you should use is a 30A Fuse.

Ok, here are the diagrams for Both circuits.

Driver Door ONLY Courtesy Power Interrupt:

Driver OR Passenger Courtesy Power Interrupt:

If you want to do this for a 4 Door car, just add a Door Pin switch in series to each of those doors. You MAY be able to use the switches already in place on your car, if they are wired to connect the GROUND side of the circuit... I believe Most are wired complete the POSITIVE side of the circuit (Dome lights, Door ajar Warning, Etc) so please be sure before trying to Ground the OEM Door Pin Switch.

There are ways of making a circuit that will handle more than 30A. You can either use a Relay rated for more than 30A (And the fuse and associated wiring) or you can wire several Relays in parallel, which will split the Power Load.

I hope I explained this well enough. If not I can elaborate or simplify as needed.

Re: Custom Electronic Mods or Creature Comforts

I'm looking into the possibility of a small subwoofer inside the console of the 5th gen (think 4-6")...or rather the feasability. And with a kit called 'addanamp' (or similar) adding some wattage to the front end of the afbs...again, the feasability... Nothing huge but a nice, clean 50 or so watts to the front speakers.

Re: Custom Electronic Mods or Creature Comforts

You could always put the amp under the seat and just run the wires under carpet up to the Sub. Can you fit an 8" sub in there? I would imagine having the space for the "enclosure" is the hardest part of making that happen. If you are looking to get some PUNCH out of your system without a huge box in the trunk, Kicker Solobaric speakers are great for that. They require only HALF the space for their enclosure as your conventional round speaker (Yeah, they are the Square ones) and can handle quite a bit of power. AND they make an 8" model. Here's the link:

Solo-Baric L7 | KICKER

Pioneer used to make a sub & amp combo that fit in your spare tire in the trunk. It fit up under the cardboard & matting, totally hidden. I never heard one so I can't claim how well that concept worked.

I have a Pioneer 10" Dual voicecoil in a simple square ported box that I used to have in my Elantra and it hit pretty dāmn hard. The box is approximately 12" cubed. And I was using an "off-brand" TMA Audio amp. I forget who they are made by, but it is a major brand who designed and built them, just didn't put their high end brand name on them.

I would LOVE to help you with this, if you need help. As much as I can offer without having to hop on a plane anyways!

Re: Custom Electronic Mods or Creature Comforts

Cool offer.
A friend in another state helped me fix my home ac via text messaging last year. So no planes required if ya know what I mean.

I was picking at an 88 in the junkyard and dude had put 4" woofers in the rear deck. His tweeters were in the door air ducts. Got my minds attention. But I abandoned a project and sold the car I was re-doing to resume the 97 I have now.

Recently I obtained a work truck with a Bose system. Research indicates the woofer is inside the console. Further research lead to reading a how to install this system in a late model GM.
So at some point I'll disassemble a GM with the Bose system and take it from there. My goal is to gain a small amount of punch up front to let the rear stuff breath easier, and to gain a little more realism up front.
I have some Bose tv speakers with 2-3/4" woofers that have an amazing amount of bass at low volume when watching movies. That's all I'm after...a certain amount of punch and presence at about 70 dB that the afbs lacks now.

That is going to be a sweet project! And you know you have to post pics when you're done, as I'm sure you will want to brag about it!

Re: Custom Electronic Mods or Creature Comforts

A million other things in line ahead of that (on my pert near all original 97 with nearly 238k miles), which gives me plenty of time to devise a plan of action. But certainly a how to will be in order or at least the process as it happens in my build thread.

Re: Custom Electronic Mods or Creature Comforts

^^ triple port by Bell
A 3 port charger port rated at 10 amps so I can charge a pair of phones and mp3 player at the same time.
Notice the USB module has the "H"?
$3.99 at h and a accesories. I think the Bell outlet was $10 at wal mart...but that was a few years ago. It goes truck to truck with me. Can be held on by industrial velcro. But I mount mine with screws and a pair of home made metal mounting plates.
