Preludes *can* get good mileage

Just as a counterpoint to all those 4th and 5th gen drivers getting 20 mpg: I filled up today and calculated 28.8 mpg in around-town driving with a very well-broken in H23A1 (243k miles).

How? I shift up at 3000-3500 rpm on the surface streets, and 4000 rpm when I have to jump on a highway. I also go for the highest gear it'll hold as quickly as possible -- it'll do 40 just fine in 5th gear. Doesn't howl like it does at redline, but it helps keep the Jacksons in my pocket, yo. :)

Re: Preludes *can* get good mileage

Back when my prelude was a street car, it ran low 13s and got 40+mpg on the highway. I could have done very well in the city as well but I tended to be a little aggressive lol

Heretic. :) That was the Prelude. And in the days when I was driving it long distances, I could get nearly 500 miles out of one tank...used to go from northern Virginia to Charlotte in one jump without a problem.

The Miata's a bit odd. With the roof off, I get 27-28mpg no matter how I drive it -- short-shift, bounce it off the redline, doesn't seem to matter. Roof on, that jumps to 29.999999...always seems to fall just short of 30. And with a 12-gallon tank, it seems like I'm always putting gas in it...those extra 3 gallons in the Prelude don't seem like much, but they're another hour of range on a long trip.

Re: Preludes *can* get good mileage

500 miles. Niiiice!!

I heard bald heads are pretty aerodynamic vs baseball caps with the top down.

When on the highway I drive the speed limit or less. I go about 3000-3500 rpm's on the highway.

It's that thing all those boyz feeling the VTEC complain about. My Prelude has earned its bones in competition...no shame in revealing it can run long as well as fast.

I used to have that in my Sideswipe, mpgs that is lol. From my Stealth fighter, Mona, or the APC Helga, if I see 14mpg, I open the good sprite

Actually Mona on the highway is extremely reasonable. I actually leave her in 6th doing 1700rpm at 60mph....

Hard to maintain it though when everyone wants to do 70 in a 55

Lots n lots of people pass me. Every so often I pass somebody going slower than me. If I'm lucky I can fall in behind somebody going the speed limit and draft a bit.

Lest you all think I'm hypermiling to get that (in either car), that's with the tach nailed to 4000 rpm on the highway...the pace of morning traffic in my stretch of Florida. (Actually, about 10mph slower than construction guys on their way to work.)

I'm one of those construction guys.

They've come to expect that I'm usually a few minutes (or more) late.

Re: Preludes *can* get good mileage

Actually guys it isn't very safe to go normal limit in NYC. Someone is bound to a. Cut you off. Or b. Rear end you, because people drive distracted. No way around it. Been a mere lane away from horrific accidents cause of that distracted driving . Random passerby every 5 miles I can live with,

If I could stay in the entrance/service lane doing 55, I'd be great in my GTO, prelude si mpgs in a v8? Good stuff. I'd be the same if I turboed tmy third gen, and im the true owner you know? No one letting the gm fairy out when swapping cams, heads or anything else. The 502 im building is goning to get everything done right the first time.
Oh yeah.
