Everything switches off when i try start car

Hi guys. When i turn ignition switch dash lights come on as usual but when i try start I hear a single click then everything turns off and I can't even get the dash lights to come back for a minute or two. Sometimes even switches off if i turn the headlights on switch on the fan etc. Took battery in for testing was told it was fine any ideas what could be causing this?

I have a 4th gen lude 2.2 si automatic

remove the lower cover for the steering column to access the ignition switch.

at the ignition switch are about 4 wires which spread power to different portions of the car. with the ignition off, test which wires have power (should only be one, if i remember correctly) with a multimeter or test light. now turn the key on and see which ones have power. these will be the ones that send power throughout the car. now probe the last wire while cranking the car and it should show power only while you have the key turned. If it stops supplying power while still turning, you have a bad ignition switch. When the fault happens, leave the ignition on and test the other 3 wires and see if you still have power on them. If you do not, you have a bad ignition switch.

start there.

This happened to me once, it turned out it was a loose/dirty battery terminal. ACC and On position was ok until I tried to crank and it all went dark. Hopefully your issue is simple as this. Good luck!

+1 -- before you tear apart the ignition switch, clean the battery terminals, and if that doesn't do it, replace the battery cables.

Re: Everything switches off when i try start car

Well unfortunately it wasn't the battery connections but the starter so had it rebuilt rather than buy a new one 1/8 of the cost. Anyway car is back on the road. Thx for all the advice

That's an odd one. The starter motor must have had an electrical short to be able to kill power to the whole car like that.

Re: Everything switches off when i try start car

Yeah, I was going to guess that the starter was bad (Or a bad connection from the battery) and the ignition switch wasn't rolling back to the "RUN" position after turning it to "START"...

Re: Everything switches off when i try start car

Wouldn't have guessed the starter caused that...
But strange things happen with Hondas sometimes...

The throttle body probably just needs to be cleaned, Idle Air Control module may need to be replaced as well. My girlfriends 04 Grand Prix does this too.
