H22A Red Top Leak Down (100%)

Greetings,

I recently purchased an H22A red top and put it in a 5th gen. It has 80% leak down on ALL cylinders cold and 100% leak down on all cylinders warm. It does not have valve problems. The head gasket was suspect because of excessive bubbling even after bleeding the coolant system three times. The large portion of the leak down is pressurizing the crank case. All four pistons show signs of blow by on the exhaust side of the piston skirt. There is a small amount of blow by on the intake side of the skirt, but nothing nearly as bad as the exhaust side.

Has anyone seen this before? Is it likely that this motor has all 4 cylinders out of round? It seems as if there should be more deviation in leakage and blow by for something that was messed up like out of round cylinders. I have attached a photo of the blow by deposits.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: H22A Red Top Leak Down (100%)

Picture didn't work.

Used engine, from where? Someone personal? A reputable company, possibly with a warranty?

There could be severe scoring on the cylinder walls, broken rings/ringlands.... how do you know it's not valves?

You said HG was suspect..... did you change it? If so, did you look at the condition of the pistons/cylinder walls when the head was off?

Replacement engines need to be almost always rebuilded - new gaskets/seals, clutch, timing belt parts and so on
