Trying to determine value of a Prelude

I live in the San Diego area. I'm looking for a good used car to drive back and forth to work. I found a 1990 Prelude Si that has <78,000 miles on it, and probably the worst thing about it is that it has faded paint. The A/C needs to be recharged, and I suspect some seals and O-Rings. The rear tires are going to need to be replaced before long. There is also damage to one fender near the headlight that seems to have been poorly repaired. It barely shows in the photo, and I haven't seen the car yet.

The owner has recently done a lot of work to the car: New battery, radiator hose, thermostat, valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, power steering high pressure line, valve adjustment, Refinished front and rear disc brakes, New rear brake pads, New distributor, cap and rotor, by-pass hose behind distributor, spark plug wires, intake manifold gasket, cam seal, crank seal.

Edmunds.com and KBB.com both put private party transfer value at around $1800 for this car, even if I select "Outstanding" condition, requiring no reconditioning. They even put dealer retail at $2600. The owner is asking $4200 but says he won't go less than $3500.

I've noticed this same trend on other used cars I've been looking at around here--ALL of them are listed at an asking price right at 2X the Private Party Transfer Value. It supposedly accounts for geographical area by taking the zip code.

Is this just a thing about the San Diego area that I didn't know about, or is something else going on here?

I know these books are just a guide, but I'm finding it to be pretty consistent that it's off by a factor of 2, and that's quite a ways off on this car.

Is this 1990 Prelude Si possibly worth $3500?

Thanks!

Re: Trying to determine value of a Prelude

Auto or 5 speed.

That's pretty low miles for sure. But that car aint worth more than $3000 imo. And if it's auto... 2500. That's for a garage queen. The 3g is a nice car and all, but unless it was a special edition they don't hold value like a porsche or those exotic cars. It's a Honda.

Not familiar with the San Diego market, but I've been told houses that go for $200k in my area go for a million there...

Re: Trying to determine value of a Prelude

Sounds like a really nice car. Just over priced.

I've seen garage queens with asking price of over $6000 in Fla. And I saw a super nice 4ws garage queen go for $2700 in New York...

If you like the car, show the guy a stack of $100 bills, with a couple put away in case they won't go for $3000...

Re: Trying to determine value of a Prelude

all of that stuff that he has done to the car is basic maintenance..while it's good that some of those things are done it doesn't justify skyjacking the price on the car...it's his car and he can price it for what he wants, but that doesn't mean that you have to overpay...with the things that you say the car still needs it's def not in great condition and if a dealer is only supposed to be able to sell it for 2600 then I don't think you should be looking at more than 1500..people forget that all that matters is year make model and mileage..unless you have some legit name brand performance parts... the mileage is good but lol its 24 years old...3500 is crazy money for that.

Re: Trying to determine value of a Prelude

Pass it up.

If you are itemizing basic maintenence schedules like it's an NSX, it better suck the doors off anything else. Love me 3rd gens. 3500$ with headaches? Nope. Cause those issues will be a headache sooner or later. 3RD GENS ARE AWFUL DDs.
