This has been my dream car for 10+ years. I might get one today

So:
August 2004. My mom hands me $2000 and her name as a cosigner. "You need a car..." We go to dealerships in my hometown which is a few hours away from San Diego (but a small town) and check out some cars. I had stipulations about financing a car for 5 years:
I wanted it to be 5-speed. I wanted it to be at least quick. My dream car at that point was the Honda Prelude. I remember driving one when I turned 16 and I thought, "Wow... This feels different."
I had driven a collection of relatively quick cars: GSR, Type R, swapped EG's, RSX Type S, SRT-4, etc. But something about this car felt different. It felt powerful, yet refined. I wanted it, badly.

It just so happened the Honda dealership had one that was traded in. 22,000 miles, 5 speed, non-SH, 2001, black on black. If cars were high school crushes rekindled in the future, this was my unicorn with no ex-husband or kids. I wanted it. "Your payments will be $432.00 a month." ****!! Really? I can't afford that.

So I ended up in a Corolla. FML.

Now, there's a guy in my city selling a Prelude SI for $2700. It's a 1994, Clean Title, H23A1 freshly replaced, 5-speed with no body damage, clean paint job. It's not the year I want, but with this car even the 4th gen looked good. Some might even say it looks better than the 5th gen. My question to you, is it worth it?

These cars and tuner cars in general have seemed to have jumped in value for some reason. I plan on dropping the H23A blue-top into the car with a chipped P06 anyway, so do I really need to get a clean good running car? Is $2700 too much?

I've found 5th generations for around $3000-3500 but they're beat to Hell. Their owners didn't appreciate them, not the way I would have (to this day, I've never driven a car that I didn't change oil on every 2500 and I've been religious about maintenance) and for those cars, they're too far gone to be restored by me. $2000 in parts would still leave me with a salvaged vehicle that I can't get comprehensive coverage on.

What do you guys think? Clean title 4th generation, maybe talk him down to $2500, spend another $700 on the Blue Top plus maybe $250 in parts and $300-400 on an ECU? Or try to find a Prelude VTEC or 5th gen that would require less effort mechanically but to restore the aesthetics.

The alternative: A 1995 Prelude VTEC, clean title, 5 speed with a rebuilt head that has aesthetic issues: AC doesn't work (possibly needs condenser or recharge), passenger door doesn't unlock with key, 214k on the chassis and leather is worn out.

Or hunt around for a 5th gen.

Take your time and find the car you want.

It took me 4 years to find my 5th gen. Worth it.

Wait on a 5th gen if that's your favorite style. Nice ones pop up every few months. You have have to take a train or bus to go get it...

If you don't mind the 4th's looks, it's actually a fun car to drive.

If I was you id wait for a clean 5th. But if your going to heavily mod the car I would go 4th as it's a lighter car which = faster and it's cheaper which = more money's for parts. Happy Hunting!
